npr.org:

Ever since the days of Gone With The Wind, Hollywood producers have been optioning bestselling books and whipping them into celluloid hits. At the Oscars this year, several books-and-now-they're-films will get nods, from The Social Network (loosely based on Ben Mezrich's The Accidental Billionaires, which was loosely based on the lives of the smooth-cheeked geniuses behind Facebook) to True Grit (read Charles Portis' novel! Really, just do it), to 127 Hours (nee Between a Rock and a Hard Place), because some people prefer reading about a person slicing his own arm off to watching it happen.

"Unbroken" is in the works, I believe.

This little book would make a great movie, given enough backing. Not the best I've ever read but I couldn't quit thinking about the theme.

The movie "The King's Speech" is also based on a book, one of the same title, I believe.

However, there is an earlier British production which touches on the subject which to my way of thinking is much more satisfying to watch, even if it does not have the well known actors and the expensive sets. "Victoria & Albert" was made long before the more recent, oscar-nominated movie, but it did such a wonderful job of telling the story of the two royals, including the story of the king's very famous speech, that I cannot bring myself to go and watch the more recent film. Perhaps I will see it when it comes out on TV, but judging from the clips I have seen, it is not as satisfying.

Correct movie title is "Bertie and Elizabeth."
"Victoria & Albert" is about Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

"The Adjustment Bureau" and "Jane Eyre" both sound like they could turn out well. Most Philip K. Dick adaptations are at least entertaining, if not as gripping as the writing itself. Jane Eyre may not be on the top of most guys lists, but hey, what do I care? Classic.

I find the movie "Blade Runner" to be immensely satisfying. I am awe struck when I think of the era that it was made in, and the limited budget available. A work of pure genius, from start to finish.

Jane Eyre, if you are single and straight you could have lots of women just by carrying around a copy.

The Adjustment Bureau sounds promising. I'm a big P.K. Dick fan. Even bad adaptations of his books or short stories (e.g. Minority Report) are usually somewhat interesting because he has such an amazing capability to explore philosophical and social issues in the guise of Science Fiction. And good adaptations (Blade Runner, Total Recall) are some of the best SF movies ever made.

If I may express a different opinion, I think that Total Recall is very good, but can't hold a candle to Blade Runner.

Those things are so subjective. I think they are both amazing movies, in fact I would say two of my three favorite SF movies ever (2001 is the third). But I actually like Total Recall better. Its hard to adapt a PK Dick story. And of the two Total Recall probably changes more of the details than Blade Runner. But the shifting realities of Total Recall, the way even up to and after the end you aren't sure is it all in his head or is it happening? That is so the essence of what PKD got to in his writing and so much more than you ever get in a Hollywood movie.

In thought Mia W. as Jane Eyre sounds probable, however, after viewing the trailer I don't think she has it. I realize it was about a minute and a half, I just don't think she is convincing or intense enough. I read gothic lit and Jane Eyre tops the list. I think someone like Jodelle Ferland, could carry, embody and power that role, she has a natural gothic ness.

Wasn't there a movie adaptation of "Jane Eyre" about ten or so years ago?

I saw one on BBC or PBS, cannot for the life of me remember the actors, but I loved it and thought it was a great adaptation. Really captured the mood, the time, the essence.

There have been several film adaptations, but none of them have lived up to the book.

There is already a movie out on DVD called The Pat Tillman Story. I haven't seen it but from what I've heard it is supposed to be good.
