Jeremy Bernard To Be Named First Male White House Social Secretary

First Posted: 02/25/2011 12:20 pm Updated: 05/25/2011 6:35 pm

Jeremy Bernard, currently the chief of staff to the U.S. ambassador to France, will be named White House Social Secretary -- the third person to have the job during President Obama's tenure and the very first male to ever hold the position.

The Washington Post reports Bernard and his former partner Rufus Gifford (Bernard is openly gay) were some of the first supporters of Obama in California. Jonathan Capehart writes, "They raised a ton of money for him through their company, B&G Associates. Gifford went on to become finance director of the Democratic National Committee. Bernard was the White House liaison at the National Endowment for the Humanities before dashing off to his Paris post in November."

Bernard was preceded by Desiree Rogers and Julianna Smoot. At the beginning of the month, the New York Times speculated that a man would be next in line for the job, however Bernard wasn't named.

Below is the White House's statement:

The White House today announced Jeremy Bernard has been named Special Assistant to the President and Social Secretary. He joins the White House staff from the U.S. Embassy in Paris, where he serves as Senior Advisor to the Ambassador. Prior to this role, he worked as the White House Liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities.

"Jeremy shares our vision for the White House as the People's House, one that celebrates our history and culture in dynamic and inclusive ways. We look forward to Jeremy continuing to showcase America's arts and culture to our nation and the world through the many events at the White House," the President said.

"I am deeply humbled to join the White House staff as Social Secretary and support President Obama and the First Lady in this role," said Jeremy Bernard. "I have long admired the arts and education programs that have become hallmarks of the Obama White House and I am eager to continue these efforts in the years ahead."

"I look forward to working with Jeremy to continue the great work of the Social Office, from fun and educational student workshops to elegant State Dinners that welcome world leaders to the White House. Jeremy's creativity, perspective and skills will be a welcome addition to our East Wing team, as we showcase the White House and celebrating America's arts and culture," said Tina Tchen, Chief of Staff to First Lady Michelle Obama.

"What stood out in Jeremy's work at the National Endowment for the Humanities was his humor, good will, and high standard of professionalism," said National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman Jim Leach.

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Bernard currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy of Paris. He served as the White House Liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2008 to 2010. Previously, Bernard was a California Finance Consultant for the Obama for American campaign. He was a Principal of B&G Associates from 2007 to 2009, Vice-President of Mapleton Investments from 1999 to 2006 and Director of Government Affairs of Falcon Cable TV from 1996 to 2006. Appointed by President Clinton, Bernard served on the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 2001 to 2009. He previously served as a board member of A.N.G.L.E. (Access Now for Gay & Lesbian Equality) and the National Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. He was also a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's LGBT Advisory Committee, the Los Angeles Police LGBT Advisory Committee and the Los Angeles Mayor's LGBT Advisory Committee.

Choosing a homosexual over a man or a woman is a wise decision which satisfies all
people interested...
We need that kind of centrist, non partisan spirit...

I wonder if he knows what an incredible example he will be for all the nations that visit the US and have very strict and even deadly treatment of their LGBT communities! Seeing him in such an honored and respected position may open a few minds! Fantastic!

Perhaps, but I would never hire a heterosexual male "social secretary" to manage my social calendar...

Yes, but isn't it a given that any male "social secretary" is undoubtedly GAY?

This makes me extremely proud of our president. Unlike so many before him he has shown true guts and is a real American hero who stands up for the soldiers, the poor, the sick, the blue collar worker. He is a true inspiration.

Because he can't keep a social secretary? Or because he couldn't find a competent one?

He seems to have a higher job turnover rate than McDonalds.

Still, it's nice to see that glass ceiling cracking.

Rogers left after so much public scrutiny from a slip up of a coulple showing up univited. It was qutie a security breach. Nothing to do with the President

Smoot left to help run his re-election campaign so I guess she "sorta" "kinda" still likes him.

Guess that ceiling is still intact

The gay press is arguing that Jeremy Bernard's appointment is frivolous, a token gesture towards bringing LGBT people into national government.

Obama's selection of a gay man for a"social secretary" position does not address the ills of society. Deeming Obama's staff appointments as a politically substantial step is a stretch.

Sounds like so much fun. I would love to be invited to one of the Obamas next social events. It would be historic.

Why are some surprised, annoyed, dismayed or just outright sexist? As an older woman who has attended many really gorgeous weddings, I can truly report that the classiest and smoothest were orchestrated by a male (usually gay) wedding planner. They are really smart and savvy about the rules of etiquet and of beautiful presentation. Why wouldn't an experienced one be outstanding as social secretary?

See the first sentence of the 2nd paragraph above. What's more, it doesn't matter. As long as he is capable of doing his job, and I have no doubt he'll do just fine, then it's a moot point. It's probably mentioned to stop the second-guessing and snide remarks (even though those will unfortunately appear).

so who's 'surprised, annoyed, dismayed or outright sexist'? Looks to me like most people are happy with it.

This is nice I'm sure but I cannot help but notice the absence of any openly gay people to a cabinet level position in the Obama Administration. Now that would be noteworthy.

That is what I always feel when something like this is reported. I think this is great, but I didn't need to have it announced that he was gay.
08:43 AM on 02/27/2011
Although i agree, the announcement is still needed to help push the gay and lesbian movement forward because our country still has those who discriminate against them. The announcement is not for us who see gays and lesbians as equal already but its more for those who still need to see their advancements.

You would think so. However, if they did not state it up front Faux news would be reporting it like it was a scandal.
