Study after study has shown that "multi-tasking" is a misnomer. No one does several things at once.

We just move from task to task very rapidly, doing each one exclusively at the moment we are doing it.

When I am cooking several dishes at once, I am NOT "multi-tasking"; I am simply going down a list of steps one-at-a-time. The same is true for any other combination of tasks.

It is tricky to make those quick switches, although women generally do it a bit better than men. The easier we make it to adhere to the one-at-time rule when working, the more likely we are to do something right.

My parents always taught me to do something right you focus on that one thing and block out everything else. I am shocked there are people who have multiple screens going at the same time. We never were allowed to eat in front of the TV or play radios or anything while eating. When we spoke to an adult we were to stop what were were doing and make eye contact. I am enormously grateful for my parents rules today. Never were we permitted to do homework in front of a TV either.
