UN Rights Council Condemns Libyan Regime As Violence Escalates

International diplomats unanimously condemned the Libyan government on Friday during an emergency U.N. Human Rights council meeting in Geneva.

The Associated Press reports the leaders also ordered an investigation into Muammar Gaddafi's crackdown on protestors in his country and recommended that Libya be suspended from the 47-nation council.

Fred Abrahams, a Special Advisor at Human Rights Watch, told The Huffington Post the council's resolution against Libya is considered "a big development" and said Libya's confirmed suspension from the council was likely the next move.

The decision comes after days of escalating violence in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, and surrounding areas in western Libya, including Zawiya.

U.N. Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay told the council, "Tanks, helicopters and military aircraft have been reportedly used indiscriminately to attack the protesters. According to some sources, thousands may have been killed or injured."

Tom Malinowski, foreign policy expert and Washington Director of Human Rights Watch, acknowledged reports of increasing demonstrations in Tripoli but stressed there are still few details.

A Libyan citizen living in the U.S. has been in constant contact with his family in Tripoli and told The Huffington Post demonstrators in the city took to the streets again after Friday mosque services.

The young man, who wishes to remain anonymous in order to protect his family, claims the renewed demonstrations were partly in response to the message delivered during worship services.

"I'm told the government forced all the imams to give a message that basically said 'When people don't like their ruler, they should be patient and not take up swords against them,'" he said.

Witnesses report that the demonstrators in Tripoli were met with gunfire.

"After services people began demonstrating again and were mowed down with no mercy," the young man said. "There is so much gunfire in the streets it's hard to make any kind of progress."

Malinowski said in contrast to the events unfolding in the western part of the country, the eastern region of Libya, which has been under the control of the anti-Gaddafi demonstrators for several days, is "functioning very well right now."

"The folks in Benghazi are extremely joyful," he said in an interview with The Huffington Post.

"People are very organized, electricity is working, shops are open, local committees are set up in the towns we passed through. People are deliriously happy but nervous at what Gaddafi might do."

Malinowski hopes Friday's developments will pressure the international community to take further decisive action.

"It's a time to throw every dart that we have at the dartboard," he urged. "Sanctions, freezing accounts, pursuing investigations leading to holding leaders accountable, beginning to plan military contingencies such as a no-fly zone and naval blockades if Gaddafi holds on and begins striking out at the population in the eastern areas."

Whatever. At this point, such things don't matter much.

If this is internal, then it will be settled in Libya, and perhaps be very bloody. I don't see how it is local because their economy was buzzing.

If this joker stays in power, they will be isolated, duh, like CUBA! But Cuba has evidently become a green bastion, their health is optimum from all the veggies they were forced to grow on their roof tops and in small farms because after the Soviet collapse, they had no OIL ! Their diabetes rates went down very dramatically, and their sense of community rose too. I read a fiure that 40% of those who leave come back!

If it is instigated from outside, this is likely part of a game between at least two blocs, and thus subject to a lot of fluidity. Certainly, this hurts Italy a lot, and Burlesconi has been under this sort of Republican type sex scandal attack that they use to get thier way (although I have no idea what the issues are). However, it might be a "hot spot" created to justify s regional or a world war.

All of the Western World i.e. USA, UK, Germany, France, Switzerland et al have been supporting these very same Regimes & the Rulers for the last 30+ years, while the citizenry of these countries suffered in silence. Surprisingly, have not seen any condemnation from UK! All the countries governments listed above and many more are Guilty of Crimes against Humanity, that were forced upon these innocent citizenry. Posturing now, is an attempt to re-frame the truth, the selfish interests, reeks of Hypocrisy.

Lighten up. You have so many paint brushes here, you might fall off your soap box. "All the countries governments listed above and many more are Guilty of Crimes against Humanity" ..if you want to play the guilt by association game we could be here all day (ie. Since we tortured and the UK is associated with us, they tortured too and now can not condemn torture or face the wrath of Kevin's judgment machine).

The UN is so completely ineffective . They put sanctions against regimes killing their own people from Rwanda to Sudan and Saddam to Ahmadinejad for decades now and the killers have easily ignored them and later held positions in this den of kleptomaniacs and thugs .

They pass resolution after resolution that is never acted upon and the last man to act on one GW Bush was attacked by the same council that wrote the resolutions threatening military action .

We may need to look to NATO and speak to some of the newly freed nearby nations to give at least basic protection to the Libyan People . No Fly Zone , strong deterrents to prevent use of artillery against citizens and war crimes prosecuted .

The UN is powerless to stop what is happening in Libya!

These despotic regimes are remants of the colonials, and this is why they have been funded and armed to the teeth, to keep the same system of suppression and brutal police state politics.

Especially North Africa has not seen a fresh air hundreds of years, as colonial one after another have come in our lands and impose their will on us.

Now, the new colonial power is the US, who uses their wealth to corrupt our lands and keep despots in power to manage their interest in Muslim lands. They could careless for our sisters in brothers in North Africa.

Where was the UN and the west when we have been crying about the poverty and corruption and brutal police states we live in? You come because you have accuse every Muslim from Morocco to Egypt as being Al Qaeda and you justified supressing us for this reason.

West intervention is not needed now, for if the west comes in, they will impose the same system with puppets that will carry out their interest in lieu of ours.

No, the UN cannot even deal with the Israel killings in Gaza, so I do with expect them to help us?

True.

The puppet dictators themselves suppressed the people by using Al Qaeda as an excuse.

Never again.

"I'm told the government forced all the imams to give a message that basically said 'When people don't like their ruler, they should be patient and not take up swords against them,'" he said.

But of course, they were NOT "taking up swords" with the ruler. "Taking up swords" means fighting the ruler with weapons. When in fact, its the ruler that has all the weapons and has been killing his people with them.

I am sure glad the UN Rights Council Condemns these actions. I am sure that is going to bring a swift end to the violence.

All you US bashers, here: If you're from a west country, your country's hands are not clean, either. And, if you're from a Third World country, a lot of us would just as soon keep our taxpayer dollars right here at home so you can continue to live in the Dark Ages.

Libya was on the UN human rights council? They might vote to kick them out. This will be a big deal. Why is our president spending time on gay marriage when there is a crisis in Libya? Who is in charge? Where is the sixth fleet? Who sent the inadequate ferry to pick up the Americans? The British, Greeks and even the Dutch got it right. Remember when we had a president Reagan?

These pictures really help to humanize a far-away situation. They are lovely. I hope the Libyan people understand that the people of the United States are their friends, and wish them peace.

What the people of Lybia need right now is an aircraft carrier off the coast to impose a no fly zone and a blockade. That will send a message to Gadhafi, the people of Lybia and the entire Middle East that America is on the side of freedom and liberty. It will also make sure that the only way Gadhafi, his family and supporters will leave Lybia is in a box. We do not need to send in the Marines. The Lybians are doing their own fighting and doing it well. It's payback time for Lockerbie. Obama should not miss this ooportunity. But he will.
