David Wu Explains Mental Health Issues

David Wu

JONATHAN J. COOPER   02/27/11 09:25 PM ET   AP

PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon congressman whose erratic behavior has recently prompted calls for his resignation said Sunday that some of his actions could be attributed to a reaction to mental health drugs.

U.S. Rep. David Wu told The Associated Press, however, that it does not explain the behavior documented in reports over the last month, which included sending his staff photos of himself wearing a tiger costume.

Wu said he was hospitalized after his 2008 campaign for symptoms that were later diagnosed as a reaction to common mental health drugs. A spokesman, Erik Dorey, identified them as the sleep-aid drug Ambien and a generic form of Valium, which he said Wu used for anxiety and stress.

Wu said that as a result, he felt dizzy and confused on Election Day that year, when his staff and family reportedly were unable to locate him.

"It came up that afternoon, and it knocked me off my can," Wu said, referring to the symptoms.

The AP interview in his Portland office was the most detailed public account yet of Wu's psychiatric treatment since reports of his erratic behavior first surfaced last month. Six staff members quit after his 2010 re-election campaign during which the congressman gave angry speeches and talked his way inside the secure portion of Portland International Airport.

The congressman said last year's episodes were the culmination of a period of mental health challenges that began in 2008 as marital issues led toward his separation from his wife.

He declined to detail the problems in his marriage but said they had nothing to do with his health.

In 2008, Wu was prescribed mental health drugs that he described as "very common." Wu said he reacted to an enzyme in the drugs, and that after the election he was hospitalized for two days.

He said he continued to feel unwell until summer 2009, when doctors linked his symptoms to his medications. Despite his allergy, Wu acknowledged taking two tablets of an unknown painkiller from a campaign donor in 2010.

"That is what a combination of pain and bad judgment will do, and I shouldn't have done it," Wu said.

He said he was experiencing severe neck spasms from an old football injury and left his prescription painkillers in Washington, D.C. Wu said he did not experience any side effects from taking the medication.

He declined to discuss his specific diagnoses, but said he has never been treated for substance abuse.

Wu attributed his outbursts in 2010 to stress from a tough campaign, a dissolving marriage and taking care of his children, ages 11 and 13.

Asked whether he can handle the stresses of Congress and of a future campaign, Wu said his October episode happened during a period of such extreme stress that wouldn't occur again.

"Anyone who has known me over a period of time has said that I handle a wide variety of things very well," Wu said. "Last October was an atypical period for anybody."

Wu said the staff departures were a wakeup call that he had been a "hard boss" – curt with his staff when he's short on time and impatient when there was no need to be.

Wu said he would not step down, despite calls for his resignation from Republicans and from some Oregon newspapers.

"I can do this job, and I can do this job well," he said.

We are all crazy, but the sane person acknowledges it, and does the hard work to get better. Sound like a paradox, It is. Life is paradoxical. What is really insane is those among us who have no self doubt, those that think they have the right answer all the time and don't need to learn and grow from an ever changeing world. Show me a person who never doubts, who never changes their mind, and I will show you a very dangerous person.

How cute did he look in those photos though? I just wanna pinch his cute lil tiger cheeks!

Seriously though... c'mon people pharmaceutical addictions are pretty normal. I say we just pretend like this never happened and it'll just work itself out! Who knows? Maybe one day he'll be known as President Wu! How would you feel about yourselves then?

This guy has been exhibiting erratic behavior and bad judgment since 2008. But, hey, no big deal. He's sending all kinds of warning signs and this kind of behavior will happen again. Somebody needs to help him.

Speaking of on-going "warning signals" we ALL could name SEVERAL Republicans who continue to exhibit very disturbing and bizarre behavior, especially in their speeches, and yet the Teapubs think it's great and somehow helpful. It is not. It is scary & meant to incite the feeble-minded.
Rep. Wu has not threatened anyone or tried to incite them to harm others: he fell apart under the weight of many stressors, sought help, was given the wrong medications (ambien has had SERIOUS side effects for many, I'm surprised it's still on the market) and he is being honest with us & his constituents.

I've had two relatives who both exhibited "strange" behavior after taking Ambien. One of them, my brother, was also taking prescription pain-killers for an injury. He "lost" entire days where he went to work, interacted with people, made major financial decisions and he doesn't remember any of it. The people around him reported that during that time he was like Jekyll and Hyde. My mother was in the habit of taking her Ambien and then not going to sleep...which induces hallucinations!

Ambien is NOT as harmless as its manufacturers would like everyone to believe!

I don't know if this gives Rep. Wu a "pass," but it certainly sheds light on his behavior. I wish he had been more forthcoming about the problem initially. He would find lots of folks with similar stories, I bet.

I have read many articles about the strange behavior that ambien has caused for many people. I'm glad Rep. Wu felt it was better to explain than to try & hide the problems he was going through. The MINUTE I read he was on ambien it cleared up a lot in my mind. I wish him well & hope that people will stop making emotional and/or mental problems such a stigma that others are too afraid to seek help or talk about it.

If you watch the Ambien TV ads, and listen, they don't say Ambien is harmless. In fact they list hallucinations and suicide as possible side affects. We brush aside those warnings because we want to believe that there is a pill that we can take for any and all problems.

Give the man a break. His voting record and words regarding the political issues of the day seem to be rational. I wish we could say the same for everyone currently in public office.

Meds can have strange side-effects and sometimes various physical ailments too. Remember the reporter who started speaking in gibberish on camera several days ago. Turned out to be an unusual migraine symptom.

One congressman takes shirtless photos of himself and sends them to a woman and resigns. Another goes crazy and takes photos of himself in a tiger costume then sends them to his staff. Both are just weird and obviously in need of help. But neither should have to resign.

Are we becoming a culture where we demand a virtual beheading for any slip up by a public figure?

Excuse me!

In the one instance you have a married man who is trying to have a sexual liaison with someone other than his wife. To make matters worse, this congressman is from the party of "family values" and good christian conservatism.

In the second instance, you have a father who is doing something with his kids for Halloween.

If you can't distinguish the difference between those two sets of circumstances, you are the one with mental issues.

If only he had lied under oath about the affair, then you guys on the left would support him staying in office, right?

Only if they are even mildly left-leaning. If they push normal American hard-right policies, such as the destruction of entire countries based on fabrications, then they become heroes.

Ambien and Valium is not a mental health aid, it's a cocktail that is the preference of choice for Linsay Lohan.

Don't tell US, tell the doctors that keep prescribing them & not telling patients the dangers!

He should simply say, "I'm a Democrat, get over it"

Judging from the past, the Dems always support their nutty base, regardless.

As a mindless slur against Democrats, you need some fine-tuning. You're confusing leadership with base, and "judging from the past" kind of just dangles there as a suggestion that Democrats judge from the past in order to support their base. I don't mind that you're saying ignorant things, but at least say them well.

Wu's staff had quit in large numbers because of his erratic behavior, and it was an important enough issue for the local paper (non-GOP, incidentally, as all good Portlanders are Democrats) to take up. I hope that this puts the issue to rest, myself. Psychiatric medication has some very bad side-effects sometimes, and I have seen people become very strange when they take Xanax as prescribed.

I took Paxil for a few weeks many years ago. What a ride that was - an E-ticket on the crazy coaster. The depression was nothing compared to being completely looney tunes from the Paxil.

From what I've observed within the beltway, good mental health is not a requirement to serve in government!
