GOP Governors Undermine Obama Agenda

Gop Governors Obama Agenda

WASHINGTON — Their ranks swollen after the last election, Republican governors from Florida to Alaska are undermining President Barack Obama's agenda at every turn ahead of the Democrat's 2012 re-election campaign.

Some are rejecting federal money for high-speed rail. Many are fighting the president's health care law. And several are going after the Democratic Party's bedrock constituency, pushing laws that would weaken the power of unions.

Not that any Republican governor will acknowledge that this is politics at play – even if it is.

"Republican governors are doing what they said they would as candidates," insisted Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who led the GOP's campaign efforts last fall and may seek the party's presidential nomination. "All this goes back to our commitment in the last election that we're going to get control of spending for the sake of the taxpayers."

"It's not a conspiracy. It's not that we're doing this for a political reason to go after the president," added first term Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett. "We have fundamental disagreements. We have different perspectives."

But left unsaid in interviews with governors attending this weekend's National Governors Association meeting was this: Republicans, particularly in places with many electoral votes, like the Midwest, are fully aware that stymieing Obama's plans in the states could weaken him just as he tries to make the case to the country that he should get a second term.

One Republican governor has gone so far as to privately liken GOP governors' efforts to providing "oversight of the Obama administration."

All that provides fodder for Democrats to criticize.

"They are so obsessed with the short-term political game of keeping the president from succeeding that they've taken their eyes off of the big goal ... which is creating jobs and moving our states and country out of this recession," said Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association.

Could the GOP effort to undercut Obama backfire?

"Yes. I think it already has," said Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, a Democrat. "Americans aren't anxious to refight the fights of the last two years. They want to move on."

The president's conflicts with GOP governors date to his first years in office. Many Republican governors opposed Obama's economic stimulus plan. Some also objected to his Gulf Coast oil-drilling moratorium.

After big GOP gains in November, Obama is running into even more roadblocks.

GOP governors now control most of the 26 states that have sued to stop Obama's health care overhaul, his signature domestic accomplishment. They say it would cost their states too much money. Last month in Florida, U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson ruled the law was unconstitutional.

Some GOP-led states – such as Alaska, where Republican Sean Parnell is governor – have refused to implement the law in light of that ruling. But the Justice Department wants the judge to order the states to follow the law pending an appeal.

"We cannot sustain it. We can't afford it," said Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, who also has assailed Environmental Protection Agency efforts to regulate greenhouse gases. "We believe that the federal government just needs to get out of the way and let us run the states."

Obama's high-speed rail plan has run into trouble, too. Democrats say the projects – mostly funded by the federal government – would create jobs; Republicans worry about cost overruns and the long-term expense.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, both Republicans elected in November, have killed two major projects that their Democratic predecessors had approved. And Florida's new governor, Rick Scott, is refusing to accept a $2.4 billion federal block grant for high-speed trains between Tampa and Orlando; the state would have to provide $300 million.

Scott said he worries about cost overruns, and would rather use the money to protect the state's ports. He's showing no signs that he will reconsider his opposition even though the federal government has given him a revised proposal and a week to change his mind.

"What each state is doing is figuring out the needs of their states," Scott said. "I'm focused on what's good for my citizens." He said that's not Obama's high-speed rail plan or "Obamacare."

Going to the heart of Obama's political base, Republican governors' efforts to hamper unions have been on full display in the past few weeks.

Protests have raged in Wisconsin and Ohio over proposals that would limit bargaining rights for many public workers, efforts that Walker and Kasich insist are necessary to rein in costs amid budget crises.

"This is not about going after somebody," Kasich said, arguing the measure is about "restoring power to taxpayers."

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels stripped power from unions six years ago but saw nowhere near the outcry that his counterparts have. Democrats in his state successfully blocked a GOP bill last week that would have prohibited union membership from being a condition of employment.

Obama, himself, waded into the Wisconsin dispute recently by arguing that limiting bargaining rights "seems like more of an assault on unions."

GOP governors are fighting other Obama policies as well; states like Wyoming are challenging the EPA's regulation of greenhouse gas emissions.

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead, a Republican, said longstanding environmental feuds between the states and Washington have worsened during the Obama administration because of its emphasis on renewable energy over oil and gas. The White House, Mead said, has a "view that we need cleaner energy at the expense of all the energy and production that we have now. We need both."

It's a safe bet there will be even more tussling between Republican governors and Obama between now and November 2012.

If the governors' doing the right things by the voters, the things they promised during their campaigns, harms the president's agenda, so be it.

The experiment with a novelty is turning out badly.

Thank God, because obama & the progressives are at this point an outlaw government, thumbing their noses at court decisions and laws that they CHOOSE to ignore or even actively attempt to undermine. The people, appalled by the democrat over reach, threw hundreds of Dems out of office in Nov. Do the progressives even slow down??? No.. the ends justify the means, they can't destroy (transform?) America fast enough and don't give a damn what the people or the courts say.

Everything the pubs do is "under". They are classic under-achievers, and I am constantly underwhelmed by their compassion for the middle class.

Yes indeedy, Repub governments are laying for Obama's goals! Eveything in the aritcle is spot on, except that the nation agrees with the Repubs. Americans want the government to reign in spending, just like we Americans have had to do. Obama has offered no help to Arizona along their long border with Mexico.

Repubs do not want to break unions. Why do that? We need unions. Repubs want to curtail unions' ability to negociate deals that cost more than states can pay. It's not smoke and mirrors. It's not anti-labor, or anti-poor people. It's pro economic stability and responsibility.

As near as I can tell Obama's agenda has been to compromise with the GOP. The GOP agenda has been to win. Guess who therefore has the tactical advantage in this fight?

(Hint: it ain't they guy worried about pleasing both sides)
02:20 PM on 03/01/2011
If Obama wanted to mend bridges with Conservatives then he could repeal Obamacare which was voted on Christmas Eve and chocked full of political bribes. Not one Republican vote! Yet he takes over 20% of the economy. The process bordered upon criminal. If he'd chuck Obamacaret he'd be a poster boy for the right.

In fairness, it would help if Obama had an actual agenda to begin with, you know something more significant than empty vapid platitudes like Hope, Change and Winning the Future.

What is this winning the future baloney? Did peole keep saying to Obama "WTF?" and he thought it meant this?

I wish somebody would reconnect Obama to reality and tell him we have serious issues here and now that need his attention.
02:25 PM on 03/01/2011
I agree. It seems to me that he has no political center that anyone can understand. Just think about it. What does Obama believe? What is his vision? I'm not sure he knows either. He says sometimes that he wants "fairness". Well, what's that? Share the wealth? If that's so then he should come out and say it, trouble is most Americans wouldn't agree.

The problem with Obama is that the more people learn about him the less they like him.

Most Americans would vote hell yes share the wealth if the realized that it mean putting more money in their pockets, which is truly what it would mean for 98% of Americans.

the problem is that the wealthiest 2% would object and thanks to Obama those 2% are running the show opposed only by a naive fool who thinks compromise is a good idea no matter what the issue may be.

Politician's are like pit bulls, i.e., snarling, flesh-tearing animals who hate other dogs of the same species. Is this doing us any good? It just leave a lot of blood on the floor. If they're going to continue to act like bone-headed, self-righteous manipulators, who benefits from it other than the powerful, the greedy, and those who get ahead based on the destruction of others? Its' a dumb as rocks paradigm. It's got to go, otherwise we'll be left behind by other countries who work together, either by democratic means or by decree. Standing still is moving backwards.

Hopefully the taxpayers are paying attention this time.....The GOP consider all of this a 'game', but it's the people that suffer from their game. Maybe, this will insure that these b****ards don't get re-elected. Meanwhile, what will these same people do if an emergency occurs in their state (ya know, like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes).....will they be the very first to 'ask' for federal assistance. Don't be so darn hypocritical.....it may be a 'game' to you, but it isn't to those you represent!!
02:29 PM on 03/01/2011
Keeping one's money is never a "game". Nor is losing one's job because of overtaxation and government intrusion. No, the GOP is very serious indeed.

As for government support after an emergency? States have their National Guard. FEMA is the law. I do agree howevcer, the we don't need FEMA, we have private insurance for emergency assistance. We recovered from catastrophies before FEMA and could do so again.

"Republican governors from Florida to Alaska are undermining President Barack Obama's agenda at every turn ahead of the Democrat's 2012 re-election campaign." And all of this at the expense of the country. This hurts each and every American. But these "people" don't care. Anything to stop Obama. They couldn't care less who it destroys. Spoiled little brats.

Actually, he had a pretty good 2 years. And if he didn't have to take on the party of NO, he would have done even better.
02:31 PM on 03/01/2011
No, it's not anything to stop Obama. It is rather, anything to stop Obama's over spending and borrowing. I'd throw his poor energy program in there too. We do need to drill in Alaska and off our coasts. Repubs don't hate Obama, they just consider him ineffective.
08:57 PM on 03/01/2011
Like most Republicans, there is a definite re-write of history here. Clinton left office with a surplus, Bush left office with this deficit, along with a trashed economy, thanks to his removal of almost all regulation. The Republican greed has brought down this economy, but now you blame Obama. Come on......

Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels Suggests Health Care Rationing

Consistency and those niggling little details are the bugaboos to the conservative ideology. It's easy to say that you want to privatize Social Security for future recipients, but that leaves the very real budget problem of knowing how to pay for current recipients, doesn't it? Where does that money come from? And if you allow those 20 year olds to take those FICA taxes to some private, non-government backed entity, what exactly happens if at 70 years old, their 401ks (or whatever vehicle is chosen) are worthless because the financial institutions have failed, like they did just over two years ago? Do you tell those 70 year olds, "Gee, that's a shame, but thems the breaks?"

ikewise, when you're dealing with Medicare, it's very easy to say that it's more efficient to offer vouchers to recipients...but then those niggling details crop up. For as much as Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels likens Medicare to a top down monstrosity, the reality is that Medicare is a non-profit enterprise.

... So we come back to the absolutely unacceptable notion of rationing health care, based on what? Your income/socio-economic level? Your age? Even the statistical analysis of outcomes or underwriting depersonalizes and dehumanizes people in need of treatment. How would you feel if these companies told you your life isn't worth the expense?

As a nearly 70 year old I can tell you that we're fine. What kills us is taxes and fees. Car license fees, property taxes and income taxes his we with a fixed income hard. The people who hurt the worse are those who believed that Social Security would provide all of their retirement. They believed the Democrat Party Line. What a shame.

No, we're fine, but I sure wish I didn't have to pay so much in taxes.....and in gasoline too. If we just had a working energy program!

There you go again! (Didn't you love Ronny!). Liberals love to call conservatives racists, which is untrue. Class warfare is a corner stone of the Democrat platform. It's sad really, since there are so many things that we need to solve.

The next election will probably hinge upon the economy. Since Obama doesn't seem to be doing anything to heal our ailing economy, I don't fear it's outcome. The right side will most likely win. The Tea Party is not a flash in the pan. It's a forrest fire!

I think they are undermining the people of their states by trying to score political points in order to run for president sometime in the future.
02:46 PM on 03/01/2011
Scoring political points is called "politics". Does politics undermine the will of the people? I suppose the answer to that is a also political.

I guess the question is, how do we do our best to respond to the will of the people? You do understand, I'm sure, that we are not a democracy. We are rather a republic, ruled by law, and not the will of the people, and there are good reasons for it.
