kk.org:

In October 2009 John Walkenbach noticed that the price of the Kindle was falling at a consistent rate, lowering almost on a schedule. By June 2010, the rate was so unwavering that he could easily forecast the date at which the Kindle would be free: November 2011.

Kindle should be free since there is more money to be made from downloads than the device itself.

It is a very good device that Amazon has developed. It could be made more user friendly, but it will change the way we read.

Hmm. may be free if you made a purchase of an $X amount of merchandise directly from Amazon.

Well, the article is saying it might be for people in Prime, which is $80 year. Prime get you free two say shipping and streaming video. My guess is that people with Prime have the built in incentive to shop at Amazon, as do Kindle owners, and so it takes sense that they'll more than make make their money in many cases.

I have Prime, and i'd say it's more than paid for itself with all the orders i've made getting free 2-day shipping. Now they have instant streaming video. For now there are very few see-worthy titles among the 5,000 or so that they offer for free viewing. Still have to shell out bucks for good movies. If Kindle becomes free, hey, I'll take it. Even if i may not really use it often or at all.

Another Kindle, that would be delightful.

Amazon really knows their stuff. I love Prime, I love my Kindle, I love the new free streaming stuff, I love being in Vine... A couple weeks ago my copy of Waiting For Superman shows up mangled. The over-nighted me a new one and I live in the middle of nowhere so it was extra impressive.

Anyhow, if this is true, my husband can trade up from his K2.
