James Franco Skips Oscar Party, Leaves Los Angeles

Franco

Guess he wasn't much in a partying mood.

It turns out hosting the Oscars was more than enough fun for one night for James Franco -- though some would debate the fun part -- and after finishing up his co-hosting duties, Franco jetted out of Los Angeles. Which meant that he skipped his own Oscar party.

Having given a detached, cool and perhaps uninterested performance -- drier than his throat in "127 Hours" -- Franco was in no mood to hang around. With classes to attend on Monday, Franco left quickly, tweeting two photos to explain his absence.

The pictures probably didn't do much to reassure the attendees of his Supper Club bash, but then, it's not as if James Franco generally cares about pleasing people.

My opinion of franco sank precipitously as the dry night wore on and found its nadir when the young turk just stood there with the dopey grin and fid nothing funny or cute or witty or scary or outrageous. Im falling aslep just writing a...b...o....u....t........i...t.

As an Oscar host, James Franco made David Letterman look good.

he never planned on attending the after party (if you saw yesterday's general hospital, you'd get it..)

He never planned on attending the after-party for anyone that saw his General Hospital cameo yesterday...

Not true. He not only planned on attending but was planning on performing. In fact, he said that the after party was what he was really looking forward to on Oscar night.

James talking about performing at his after party.

After reading the comments, why do I have the feeling that if he did stay and party that people would be saying, "Look at that spoiled movie star. He should be heading back to school, if he expects us to take him seriously."

He may not be your favorite, and for good reasons, but what would you do if you had the chance to cash in on Hollywood?

Would it change your opinion if prior to hosting he had put in 4 20-hour days in a row, between school and rehearsal? I heard on the radio that his team put out a statement to that effect. He did look tired. I'm kind of surprised you're not willing to cut him a break.

Most actors are boring --- elderly, damaged Kirk Douglas being an exception. The producers of the Oscars need to find a young comic (to appeal to the same demographic that Franco and Hathaway were supposed to appeal to) and let him or her host. The only successful hosts have been people who basically do stand up, Billy Crystal and Bob Hope are the best examples.

And get better writers for the presenters. That's one of the biggest problems --- you get actors who can barely read the cue cards --- Jennifer Hudson, who looked beautiful, was painful to watch, as was Mira Kunis. Or if you MUST have actors, get someone like Dame Helen Mirren, who always looks beautiful and who has the stage training to read the telephone book and make it sound interesting.

Anne Hathaway gets some slack for at least trying to make it interesting (she overdid it, obviously), as does Justin Timberlake, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges both read scripted remarks in their respective remarks introducing the nominees for best actor and best actress, but they're both professional enough to make the verbage sound spontaneous.

The best Oscar moments always come from people who have the ability to think on their feet. The late David Niven's spontaneous response to a disruptive streaker's appearance while Niven was onstage is still quoted: "That fellow's only claim to fame is to appear and show all his shortcomings."

My girlfriend had to read his book, 'Palo Alto' for a college class. Vacuous and disgusting. I haven't seen much from him that contradicts that overall description. He gets handed things because he's the 'hot' name. I don't see it lasting.

Does anyone watch this stuff anymore? It's a bunch of self-indulgent moments that go on for hours, and hours. The producers can play around with the hosting all they like, but it's still like beating a dead horse.

James Franco is the cure for insomnia, and Anne Hathaway made Gwyneth Paltrow look dynamic.

Franco the best host ever. Suits the show well.

Very funny. :-)

That's some awesomely dry humour you have there.

During the show he seemed really detached. Can you blame him? Neither he nor Hathaway were suited for the hosting role, but at least she tried. I felt sorry for her during the show at times. He was probably embarrassed about the show and just left.

"Maybe he was tired or whatever..." Right. We all know he was high as a kite!
