NHL Trade Deadline 2011: Live Updates, Latest News
If the NBA trade deadline a few days ago is any indication, we're in for a wild finish to the NHL trade deadline today.
It's one of hockey fans' favorite days -- that is, as long as your team is involved (and a buyer rather than a seller). What's better than seeing a fresh face suit up for your squad with the NHL playoffs around the corner?
But as Globe & Mail's James Mirtle notes, this year there are so many more buyers compared to sellers with a logjam in the standings and so many teams still in the playoff hunt. That makes it more difficult to make deals.
Even so, a flurry of deals is expected as the 3 p.m. Eastern Time deadline approaches, and some will likely even be announced after that time passes.
In addition to updates below, keep NHL.com handy in your browser, as well as Canada's TSN for the latest news and analysis. Here we go!
The Calgary Flames have acquired forward Freddy Modin from the Atlanta Thrashers for a 7th round draft pick.
The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Jason Arnott from the New Jersey Devils.
The Edmonton Oilers have sent forward Dustin Penner to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenseman Colten Teubert and a first-round draft pick in 2011.
The NHL confirms that the Chicago Blackhawks have acquired defenseman Chris Campoli from the Ottawa Senators.
The Florida Panthers have reportedly sent defenseman Bryan Allen to a Southeast division rival, the Carolina Hurricanes. Sergei Samsonov is said to be involved in the deal, though TSN's Bob McKenzie cautions the deal is not done.
More and more people are pointing out how quiet the day has been. The Vancouver Sun just posted an article on the topic, noting, "The National Hockey League's trade deadline day - usually a day marked by deal after deal - remained quiet with a little more than two hours to go before the 3 p.m. ET cutoff."
The Edmonton Oilers have traded Shawn Bell to the Colorado Avalanche for Kevin Montgomery, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Columbus gets forward Scottie Upshall and defenceman Sami Lepisto. Phoenix gets defenceman Rotislav Klesla. Details on the deal here.
The Atlanta Thrashers acquired veteran forward Radek Dvorak from the Florida Panthers.

So far, some big moves have already been made. In the last 24 hours, the Washington Capitals acquired defenseman Dennis Wideman from the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres acquired forward Brad Boyes from the St. Louis Blues.
Some of the biggest moves thus far from general managers have been re-signing players. Detroit extended goaltender Jimmy Howard's contract by two years. Ottawa re-upped Chris Phillips for another three years. Los Angeles signed Justin Williams to a four-year contract as well.
There is sure to be a flurry of deals in these final hours so stay tuned.
