Danielle Clauson Buzzer Beater: Concordia University Beats College Of Idaho On Amazing Play (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/01/11 01:17 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

When a team only has seven tenths of a second to score, sometimes it takes a little trickery to pull off a game-winning shot.

That's exactly what Danielle Clauson of the Concordia University women's basketball team did on Monday night against College of Idaho.

With the score tied at 61 and .7 seconds left, Clauson was set to inbound the ball under the basket. Clauson noticed that nobody was defending the pass and there was a player on College of Idaho in front of her not facing the ball.

Clauson caught the defender off guard, threw the ball off her opponent's back and retrieved it right away. Then she quickly knocked down a 10-foot, game-winning jumper at the buzzer. The crowd immediately jumped out of their seats and celebrated with Clauson on the court.

Concordia won the game 63-61 and made it to next week's NAIA National Tournament. Scroll down to watch the incredible buzzer beater.

The clock starts when the ball touches the 'inbounds player'. Since it did not hit the floor nor was caught, it's called a 'tap'. The call was correct. The score is good. It would be the same as if she had thrown the ball up to the basket and it was tapped in by another player.

No way the ball hit the girl's back and another girl got the shot off within .7 seconds. Ref's should never have allowed that to stand. With .4 you can only tip a ball in. With .7, legally, you can only take the time to barely get a shot off. The extra time of the ball hitting the opposing girl and coming back to the shooter would absolutely make it longer than .7. Basket never should have counted, opposing team got screwed by bad officials who didn't do their job properly.

It may have taken longer than .7 seconds. However, it's worth noting that the clock doesn't start until the ball is touched.

Just for kicks I tried timing it from the point where the ball hit the girls back. I get around .75 to .80 seconds until the the ball left the shooter's hand. Hard to tell exactly when the ball left her hand however since it was at the top of the frame.

I tend to agree that the play might have taken longer than .6 seconds since the ball has to be released by 0.1. I considered this play as an all time buzzer beater but I went with this one instead. http://dailypuma.blogspot.com/2011/03/greatest-college-basketball-buzzer.html

How was that the "Best Buzzer Beater Ever?"

Derek Fisher's 0.4 second shot to beat the Spurs, down by 1 in the Western Conference Finals is the best buzzer beater ever.

LOL  OK, so maybe it wasn't a perfect comparison.  Plus, I wouldn't have made it onto the team in the first place.  I was the kid who the teams would argue over about which was going to have to take me.

I applaud her for some quick thinking. Or as the previous president would say, "strategery."

Illegal play.

She didn't establish both feet inbounds before catching the ball, her right foot is still trailing in from out of bounds as her hands touch the ball off the girl's back.
01:44 AM on 03/02/2011
nope. It's not football. One foot inbounds is all that's needed as long as the other is not touching the out of bounds area anymore.

Also, she did not release the ball from out of bounds. Although it is rarely called (because in most uncontested inbounding situations no advantage is gained), all parts of the inbounding player's body, as well as the defending players' bodies, including arms, must stay completely behind the plane of the out of bounds line until the ball is released. That;s why you will often see the ref make the player stand back off the line, and sometimes will move his or her arm up and down over the line reminding players of the rule. Here, the player's arms extended well past the line when she released the ball (and she gained a clear advantage from that.) Should have been a turnover with no time off the clock.
