Foursquare Names Manchester, England 'Rudest' City In The World (PICTURE)

Foursquare has named the 20 "rudest" cities in the English-speaking world, based on data combed from user check-ins.

According to a post in the Foursquare Engineering Blog, the "rudest" citizens were those who used curse words in their check-in tips, which are meant to be recommendations from Foursquare users who have visited a location and wish to post advice for other users.

Topping the location-based social service's list of foul-mouthed cities: Manchester, England.

This means that slightly over 0.016 percent of Manchester's Foursquare users included dirty words in their check-in tips. "Although please keep in mind that this only evaluates the rudeness of English speaking countries (like that would make a difference?)," writes Foursquare Engineer Matthew Rathbone.

The Manchester Evening News reacted rather placidly to the report, writing that "though the number one spot might not be great news for Manchester, there are no shortage of Mancs who live up to the foul-mouthed standard."

"We can only assume," Metro.co.uk speculated, "that it's lots of people saying things like 'try the f***ing lamb' or 'the mojitos are the the t**s'."

Across the pond, El Paso, TX, claimed the number-two spot, with nearly the same percentage of R-rated check-in tips as Manchester. In fact, the U.S. claims the vast majority of the world's "rudest" cities.

To see the top 20 rudest cities, according to Foursquare Engineers, view the chart (below). Visit the Foursquare Engineering Blog to read about the process behind these statistics.

CA is heavily weighted to the rude end of the scale, I notice.

NYC and Paris, France aren't on the list, so it can't be taken seriously.

A long time misconception - largely propagated by clueless tourists, not the vast majority of residents.

Wait, How is Pittsburgh the 3rd rudest city in the world? Let alone on that list to begin with? Are they kidding me? I lived in Pittsburgh for 8 years now and everytime I go to a store, someone is always holding the door open for me or saying Thank you to me when I do it, or even takes the time to say hello, how are you and I don't even know the person. Out of all the places I lived before, Pittsburgh is the place that actually makes you feel like your at home. People here don't walk around like that got a stick up there ass or give you side eye stares or anything like some other cities would(Boston, Philly, NY). Pittsburgh should be under The cities with the Friendliest people list, but if I was forced to put them under the rudest city list, they would be wayy at the very bottom, because no way are they above all those other cities. For crying out loud, Mr. Rogers is from Pittsburgh, LOL.

Culver City?

Really?

What an odd choice of cities to be listed.
And Venice, CA?
weird survey.

All of the totals in this survey involve less than 2/100ths of 1 percent? Gosh, I can't imagine a more meaningless survey than this one.

I know I have worked with people who repeatedly demonstrated their ability to speak in sentences composed entirely of profanities. Their hometowns are not on this list. If we asked them why, they'd say, "@#$%^ Foursquare."

this is based on data of only 7 millions users on a planet of 6 billion // and // on users mostly located in the USA.

not very fair or accurate at ALL

Had to drive through the outskirts of Manchester 20 years ago and the glares were pretty intimidating compared to the remainder of the journey through the UK, Scotland and France; something about a cherry red Roller pi##es them off.

The rudest people accross the board in my travels are the Viennese who appear to think that women are inferior to men.

You have a point there. I found the Viennese (Wieners) sort of neutral. Nobody was really rude, nor friendly. But they were courteous and helpful to foreigners but not friendly in any way unless you got to the outskirts of the city. Then they were just lovely. I need to revisit Austria. Thanks for this reminder.

Philadelphia doesn't make the list because they'll just give ya da bird!

Maybe they're the wisest city on the earth - all the entries said something like 'what is this useless f***king c**nting site for?'. Which I would applaud, cos Foursquare is sh***ingly pointless.
