Loyola University Maryland has been in the top of the Princeton Review ratings for best dorms in the country for years. Yes, maybe I'm impartial because I went there, but I am baffled how Loyola was left off of this list.

Why no Smith College? Our houses are awesome and took the Princeton Review top spot for housing several years in a row.

VillaNoFun should not be on any best of lists

Too bad they belong to schools nobody would want to attend.

Don't let the Republicans find out or they might think this is "too nice" and ask for students to live in concrete block cells.

This is some of the weakest architecture I've seen. Not much here that is purely American and not some neurotic neo classic knock off. Is it so darn hard to create space that is as inspirational as Wright's Prairie Style? An interesting example of creative housing for young minds is the very first dorms at Grand Valley State. These wrapped around the topography of a local ravine system. What they built after that was crap. But they did get it right the first time.

U. of South Florida...each dorm has its own pool..that was a nice after class activity...and the girl gazing wasn't too bad either...

As always, there seems to be an inverse ratio between the cushiness of student life facilities and the academic seriousness of the institution.

Are you kidding me? No UC Santa Barbara? My dorm room my sophomore year (Anacapa) was literally 40 feet from the beach! The view of the Pacific alone was worth millions!

In most Chinese universities, they have twelve students per an unheated room that has less square footage than an American two-person room. Also, there is one bathroom per floor, with squat toilets and no hot water for showers. Students do not complain, because it is so difficult to be accepted to any university. They also outperform the US in math and science. Classrooms are not heated either.

And students are beaten with bats and then made to eat the bats for lunch!

That actually depends on the school, and while the higher tier schools are selective as to who they accept, just about everyone can go to a university since it's all publicly paid for. Scenarios that you're describing are more commonly seen in lower tier schools where the admission is easy enough for anyone to get in, hence the crowded and less than ideal accommodations.

As far as outperforming US in science and math, that really depends on what kind of criteria you're looking at. An American liberal arts student will without a doubt be far behind a Chinese student of the same caliber since liberal arts aren't seen as a serious degree in Chinese institutions, and as a result of this, most Chinese students focus on degrees in science, engineering, and/or business (seriously business students are sent overseas to places like America for a real business education). But if you look at graduate-level education in the sciences, Chinese and American students are equal.

If you're looking at a broad selection of just undergraduates from both countries, then Chinese students definitely have the upper hand.

Kennesaw State is around the corner from me. Each floor is lite up a different color at night and you can see it from 75N interstate.

I guess I'm beginning to see one of the reasons why college tuition has gone through the roof...

They should be nice, at over $10,000 a year!

I am not sure why the larger state schools such as Alabama and North Carolina are not included in this list. How do the dorms at Winona State measure up to these?

Not sure how Alabama and No. Carolina are, but having been to Winona State, I can't imagine them being any worse.
Honestly, I can not, for any reason, fathom why WSU is on this list. I lived in Prentiss Hall, and it is not all that. Metal bunks, about 10'x20', that you have to share with a roommate and no real space for furniture or any substantial computer equipment. To top that off, the campus (like all campuses in Minnesota) is dry.

Villanova makes the top ten list twice. No wonder everyone in my town wants to go there.

Doubtful it's the dorms. It must be the diversity on campus. (Dripping with sarcasm)

maybe colleges should concern themselves more with educating our brightest and leaving diversity to take care of itself...I highly doubt Chinese Universities are worrying about it.

These seem nice, but there is no way any of these actually make it into the top 10 nationally.
