Ashton Kutcher's Twitter Account Hacked At TED (SCREENSHOT)

Ashton Kutcher Twitter Hacked

First Posted: 03/02/11 08:59 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Ashton Kutcher is one of the most popular users on Twitter, now with 6.3 million followers.

Only five accounts have more followers, but Kutcher's account was hacked today at TED, RWW reported this evening.

The hack appears to have taken place over a local network at TED by someone nearby Kutcher. RWW noted it was "particularly humorous," but also embarrassing for Twitter, and speculated it could hurt the social network:

How excited will the stars Twitter seeks to get onboard be when they find out how easy it is for strangers to hijack their identities? Probably not very excited!

The two tweets following the hack were, "Ashton, you've been Punk'd. This account is not secure. Dude, where's my SSL?" and "P.S. This is for those young protesters around the world who deserve not to have their Facebook & Twitter accounts hacked like this. #SSL"

The tweets were posted to his account @aplusk on Wednesday evening and were still on his page as of 8:50 p.m. Eastern Time (screenshot below).

Before I read the article, I want to guess. Somebody gave him a pair of prescription glass and/or informed him that his wife is a 50-year-old man goblin with skin that looks like an over-stitched version of Yogi Berra's boyhood catcher's mit?

You have nothing to fear from Social Media. That is if you are very rich, or exceedingly poor, but if you have something to lose that will change your lifestyle, well that's a completely different story!

Both twitter and facebook have ssl it just you have to manually go to it yourself. For the life of me aside from some performance loss, have no idea why they do not force the login to ssl.

Everyone who uses these services should complain.

The fact that this cretin has 6 million people following him is as good a sign of the apocalypse as anything else.

Ok, I admit that I'm not up on socail networking. Who or what is TED and RWW?

RWW is like huffpost.

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.

They have a ton of awesome speakers and videos made available on their site. Would highly recommend you check it out at http://www.ted.com.

Anything you send over an unsecured network (If you don't see https in the url and you are on a public network) can be sniffed. There should probably be some sort of campaign to make this common knowledge, but the responsibility still falls on the user to know this regardless.

This is a major concern for twitter. I believe that the Hollywood stars and professional athletes are the ones that make Twitter what it is. If these stars get worried that their profiles can be easily hacked, they might cancel their accounts. Twitter as we know it would be gone. Twitter needs to beef up their security.

I will never understand Twitter and the need that people have to be constantly connected. Are people really that lonely or desperate for approval?

Same here. We have  a land line. I have several email accounts, but they are used almost solely for artistic and professional purposes. I guess I'm what you might call old school (or just plain old)--I like to do my socializing face-to-face.

I suspect this is for people who are entirely void of an inner life. I have too much to think about, to learn to be plugged into the minutia of someone else's life 24/7. I find it rather sad.

Using it in some ways are really good. If you have not interest in something like a hobby or something that has to do with world news, then it is actually a good tool. Also, a good marketing tool. But, if you are using it for social thing - like the kids do - I wouldn't suggest it for us folks who don't get into that. I have some very good contacts througout the world because of using it. It is real time info. And some news and other orgs use it to get the most updated info from those who are on the ground in places like the middle east.
