Frankfurt Airport Shooting: Two Airmen Killed On U.S. Military Bus In Germany

Frankfurt Shooting

DAVID McHUGH and JUERGEN BAETZ   03/ 2/11 10:13 PM ET   AP

FRANKFURT, Germany — Two U.S. airmen were killed and two others were wounded at Frankfurt airport when a man opened fire on them at close range with a handgun, the first such attack on American forces in Germany in a quarter century.

President Barack Obama called the Wednesday shooting an "outrageous act."

The alleged assailant, identified as a 21-year-old Kosovo man, was taken immediately into custody and was being questioned by authorities, said Frankfurt police spokesman Manfred Fuellhardt.

Family members in Kosovo described the suspect as a devout Muslim, who was born and raised in Germany and worked at the airport.

The attacker got into an argument with airmen outside their military bus before opening fire, killing the bus driver and one other serviceman, and wounding two others, one of whom was in life-threatening condition, Fuellhardt said. He said the attacker also briefly entered the bus.

The suspect then fled into the airport terminal, where he was quickly grabbed by two federal police officers and a U.S. airman who had pursued him into the building, authorities said. He was disarmed without incident.

The victims, part of a group of about a dozen members of an Air Force military police and base security unit, had just arrived from England, the Air Force said.

They had landed at Frankfurt airport, one of Europe's busiest, and were waiting outside Terminal 2 to be driven to nearby Ramstein Air Base, which is often used as a logistical hub for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The two wounded airmen were taken to a hospital.

"I'm saddened and I'm outraged by this attack," Obama said at the White House. "I want everybody to understand that we will spare no effort in learning how this outrageous act took place."

In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed sympathy for the victims and their families and pledged that Germany would do everything in its power to investigate the crime. "It is a terrible event," she said.

A tall blue barrier was erected around the bus as forensic experts examined it, and removed two bodies from the vehicle. As the bus was later towed away, a bullet hole was visible through the driver's side window.

The dead and wounded U.S. airmen were not identified pending notification of their families. A Pentagon spokesman, Lt. Col. Todd Vician, said the airmen were on their way to an overseas deployment to Afghanistan, Iraq or elsewhere.

Boris Rhein, the top security official in the German state of Hesse, told German media there were no indications of a terrorist attack.

Still, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Patrick Meehan, said in Washington that it looked like a terrorist attack. The chairman of the subcommittee that focuses on terrorism and intelligence added he did not have all the facts.

Kosovo Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi identified the suspect as Arif Uka, a Kosovo citizen from the northern town of Mitrovica.

In Mitrovica, family members identified him as Arid Uka, saying that he was born and educated in Germany where his family moved some 40 years ago. However, German police said he was born in Kosovo.

An uncle, Rexhep Uka, said the suspect's grandfather was a religious leader at a mosque in a village near Mitrovica.

A cousin, Behxhet Uka, said he spoke to the suspect's father, Murat Uka, several times by telephone from Frankfurt after the family was contacted by Kosovo police. The father said all he knew was that his son did not come home from his job at the airport on Wednesday.

Behxet Uka said he would be shocked if Arid Uka was behind the shooting, saying that like the vast majority of Kosovo Albanians, the family is pro-American.

The northern town of Mitrovica is best known for the ethnic division between majority ethnic Albanians and minority Serbs. The former mining town has also been the focus of reports that it breeds Islamic extremists.

Western intelligence reports have said the region could be a recruitment ground for Muslims with Western features who could easily blend into European or U.S. cities and carry out terrorist attacks.

The Kosovo government said in a statement that it was "deeply moved" by what it branded as "a monstrous act" committed by a citizen of Kosovo origin.

"This macabre case is an individual act against the civilized values and the traditions of the Kosovo people who will always be thankful to the United States, the American people and the U.S. government for its strong backing of Kosovo," the statement said.

U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz said in a statement: "Our deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences go out to the family, friends and teammates of those Airmen killed and wounded in the shooting incident on March 2 at Frankfurt International Airport. This loss is felt across our entire Service, and our Air Force family yearns for a quick and full recovery of those wounded and those family members in pain."

Kosovo remained part of Serbia amid the collapse of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, but a struggle for independence by ethnic Albanians there eventually led to the Kosovo war in 1998. The bloodshed was halted in 1999 when NATO stepped in and bombed Serbia, followed by the deployment of peacekeepers. The NATO-led Kosovo Force still has 8,700 troops there provided by 32 nations, including the U.S. and Germany.

The last time American forces in Germany came under deadly attack was in the 1986 bombing of a disco frequented by U.S. servicemen. Two soldiers and one civilian were killed and 230 others were injured. A Berlin court later ruled the bombing was organized by Moammar Gadhafi's Libya.

A leftist terror group, the Red Army Faction, was also responsible for a string of attacks on Americans in the 1970s and 1980s before the group was disbanded in 1998.

More recently, German police thwarted a plot in 2007 to attack U.S. facilities by members of the extremist Islamic Jihad Union. Four men had planned to attack American soldiers and citizens at the Ramstein Air Base and other locations but were caught before they could carry out the plot.

The U.S. has drastically reduced its forces in Germany over the last decade, but still has some 50,000 troops stationed here.

The airmen shot in Frankfurt were stationed at the Lakenheath airfield in England, home to the 48th Fighter Wing, the only F-15 fighter wing in Europe.

Baetz reported from Berlin. Pauline Jelinek and Robert Burns in Washington, Silvia Hui in London, Visar Kryeziu and Sylejman Kllokoqi in Mitrovica, David Rising, Melissa Eddy and Geir Moulson in Berlin, and Nebi Qena in Connecticut, contributed to this report.

Islamic fundamentalism is a violent politico-religious movement. It is supported by theologically conservative clerics, a world system of indoctrination schools; theocratic Sharia states and entities; billions in donations from the world Muslim community and a global system of Jihadist recruitment in mosques, Islamic centers, universities, libraries, job places, street corners and Internet.
The horrifying results are evident for all to see, the battlefield is global and so should be the ideological, political, law-enforcement and military tools to deal with adherents of this anti-humanist religious ideology.

Religiously indoctrinated based terrorism, to be precise.

How so? he only Targeted Americans and military men/women. Just thinking, why do we call it terrorism, maybe it is something we learned to use after nine eleven. Isn't terrorism is something people do to create large amount of chaos or target innocent un armed civilians? Either way it was a horrific act, my prayers goes to soldiers and their families.

"That’s a lie, carrying a gun for protection for regular citizen is strictly forbidden, even if you have a license to own one. You’ll go to jail for that.
If you have a license, you have to have an approved safe in your house for the gun and a separate safe for ammunition, locked at all times.
They are not allowed to be stored together.
You can also be visited by government officials to spot check that."

You are not very informed. In Germany, there are 2 types of gun licences, Waffenschein and Waffenbesitzkarte. Waffenschein allows you to carry a weapon, but requirements are (fortunately) very high. You don't go to jail then for obvious reasons.

You need a gun rack to lock away your guns, ammunition can be stored in the same gun rack, if it can be locked independently.

Yes, government officials can come and check your gun storage, but I have guns for about 20 years and never someone has shown up, neither have I ever heard of someone getting checked.

I am a passionate gun owner and shooter, but I highly favor strict gun control (like in Germany) over the American model.
12:54 PM on 03/03/2011
You distorted my post.
I said that it is a lie that taxi drivers are allowed to carry guns in Germany.
Carrying any weapon for personal protection by private citizens is strictly forbidden.
And you will loose your license that and likely go to jail if caught.

Again this was most likely an illegally owned weapon.

You're not German. You don't live in Germany. And this pretense is laughable if it weren't so pathetic.

Condolences to the families of our military personnel who were killed by this wastrel. The man who murdered the US Airmen will have decades of regret.

Were he in another country, I would propose capital punishment. More than likely, he will not get capital punishment.

Our military includes Muslims. Many people may object to the way our military operates, with some of the overkill of archaic methods of war.

Our military consists of individuals, operating to the best of their ability under the command structure.

By taking the lives of men he knew nothing about, except for which uniform they wear, this man, Arif (Arid?) Uka has made no meaningful statement and his life will now be wasted in prison.
06:39 PM on 03/05/2011
He certainly will not get capital punishment since that is outlawed by our constitution/ Basic Law. Most likely, he will get a lifetime sentence. Even that doesn't mean he will be locked up and the keys thrown away. After serving 15 years, judges will regulary look into his case and - usually after in between 15 to 20 years, he will be set free again; at first on probation. Since he is no German citizen and he committed a serious crime, he then will be sent back to his country.
Only exemption to this procedure: If judges rule that he most likely will pose a security risk for the public after serving his years, he can be held in custody (not prison) for as long as they think so.

Just a reminder, Albanians are ethnic minority in Republic of Serbia. There are tens of thousands of Albanians leaving in Belgrade and other parts of Serbia and some 2 millions are located in the southern Serbia and province of Kosovo and Metohija.
Just a reminder to the text author, DAVID McHUGH and JUERGEN BAETZ, according to the UN resolution 1244 Kosovo and Metohija is integral part of republic of Serbia.
11:40 AM on 03/03/2011
Just a reminder. Kosovo is independent and so far has been recognized by 75 countries, including US. By the way Serbia was bombed by NATO for attacking Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.
12:21 PM on 03/03/2011
First of all, take a look at the UN resolution 1244. Second, Serbian province of KiM is not a member of the UN. Third, one of the first casualties of Yugoslavian tragedy, was a Slovenian helicopter pilot, killed by Janez Jansa TO, Slovenian National Guard. By the way he was flying the food for border guards. Fourth, in Bosnia, Serbs fought Serbs, Muslims fought against Christians, Christians fought against Christians, and Muslims fought against Muslims and Bosnians fought against Bosnians. These are just few examples to show that there is no single answer to who bombed whom in Yugoslavian tragedy. Yes, some Serbs committed terrible crimes and war crimes. But so did the Croats and Bosnians and Christians and Muslims.
I recommend you read the book "First do no harm" by professor David N. Gibbs.
04:33 PM on 03/03/2011
Just a refresh to your memory, Serbian American. Serbs are ethnic minority in the Republic of Kosovo. Truth hurts, huh?! There are overt 2 million native Albanians living in Kosovo and some 7 other millions in Albania and neighbouring countries. UN SCR 1244 is still valid just for the sake of blinding the eyes of the common citizens in Serbia. This is the card that the world is using for Serbia to make concessions. Politicians in Serbia are well aware that Kosovo has forever been lost but they are still playing on the card of not admitting that so they can gain some points in the EU or wider in US. Serbs are spoiled minority in Kosovo who are also being spoiled by the international community because they use the Kosovo Serbs to again push Serbia make concessions towards EU. I'm sorry to disappoint you but Kosovo will never be an integral part of Serbia because Serbia with its genocide decided to get rid of Kosovo. You asked for it, yourselves. Who cares if Serbia is going to recognize Kosovo as an independent country or not?! We can live just as happily without having recognition from your native country. But, be sure that in a long run, Serbia will have to accept Kosovo's independence because it will be a price it has to pay to joing EU institutions or NATO. Long Live Albanians, Long Live Kosovo. Good help Serbia find its path!
09:17 PM on 03/03/2011
One can use weapons and bombs and disregard any written law or treaty. Yet that does not make UN resolution 1244 disappear. Also, weapons and bombs will not bring KiM membership to UN. Next, Serbia does not have to be part of NATO nor does it have to join EU. Several European countries do not belong to neither EU nor NATO. And finally, you are talking Genocide? Well, how many none Albanians are in Pristina right now? And tell us how many none Albanian lived in Pristina before 1999.

You can say what ever you want to people who are not familiar with the situation, but my mother lived in Kosovo, my brother was born in Kosovo and my wife is from Kosovo.

"Without American forces, Germany would have to substantially increase its military budget."

Not really. Germany just downsized the Bundeswehr by about a third because a large military is not needed in todays world.

ROFL.

Ok.

Well, I certainly do hope and I do advocate for the total withdrawal of all US forces from Europe.

This time around I think it entirely possible that the EU can make whatever accommodations they wish on their own.
02:13 PM on 03/03/2011
The amount of American troops has never played a role in discussions here in Germany about our own military budget. Maybe a mistake, but that is the fact.

Sorry, but nobody sees them as a protection force for Germany. They are not here to protect Germany, there are still here because of logistical advantages and the established infrastructure, they built in the last decades.

Wow...imagine that....the shooter was Islamic. Whodathunk it? I can't believe a Muslim would ever do that. Isn't Islam supposed to be peaceful?

Wow...imagine that....the victims were Americans. Whodathunk it? I can't believe it. The shooter had an airport terminal full of people nearby but targeted Americans instead.

what else do you expect? not everyone thinks the u.s. and it's policies, history, and culture are so fantastic and not everyone believes we have any moral authority, or on the side of good/right. we have cultivated a lot of hostility throughout the world. unfortunately, in their uniforms, these soldiers, are high profile citizens.

i'm very sorry for the families.

Why is it being modde d like a front page article, then?

Funny how this does not get front page treatment here at AOL/HuffPost.

Maybe because it has now become so commonplace? Or maybe because it just can't be yet another Islamic jihad act.

Here is another example of ho we all would have been better off letting the former Yugoslavia take care of its own problems....

And I agree with you also on your last statement regarding the former Yugolsavia.

Perhaps, because motive remains unknown.

This is truly a travesty. Germany owes a great debt to America, peace and stability.from complete ruin.
Sadly anti-Americanism is wide spread and with all the ongoing other ethnic tensions in Germany a terrible mix.

How did a devout Muslim get a gun in Europe? Dont they have strict gun laws?
10:14 AM on 03/03/2011
Private gun ownership in Germany is pretty common, but who said the gun was legal?
10:33 AM on 03/03/2011
BS, getting a license can take years and it’s very rare.
Unless you are a government trained and licensed hunter, getting a license can take years.
Most are denied.
And it is arbitrary; any official can deny you because he doesn’t like you.
Having a government job like fireman helps.
I take a bet the gun was illegal.
An immigrant.would not get a license.
10:15 AM on 03/03/2011
In part because of the draconian gun laws in Germany we have huge black marked for illegal weapons very easy to come by.
03:13 PM on 03/03/2011
As opposed to the US, where there is no black market for weapons???

As a former US ARMY RECON  service member my heart goes out to the loved ones of  my fallen brothers.

This is sad but not unexpected -- our government  for the past thirty years has supported authoritarian dictators  and  until these people of  the disputed lands are free there can be no peace

There are those sleepers awakening now throughout the  Arabic lands - I am aware that this guy is not Arab - the point is we have done lots of dirty work covertly to protect out interests and sacrificed human dignity of those unfortunate to be trapped  under authoritarian rulers.

"...Still, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Patrick Meehan, said in Washington that it looked like a terrorist attack. The chairman of the subcommittee that focuses on terrorism and intelligence added he did not have all the facts..."

Meehan ought not be chairman with such limited rational reasoning abilities but elections have consequences.

Note to INSANITEA GOP, not all Muslims are ARAB. Be forewarned.
