Jimmy Fallon's 'Late Night Snack': Ben & Jerry's Newest Ice Cream Flavor

The Huffington Post

In honor of the second anniversary of the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show, Fallon celebrated with an ice cream cake trotted out by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's. It was an opportunity to officially unveil their newest ice cream flavor, Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night Snack," a Fair Trade vanilla bean ice cream with a salty caramel swirl and fudge covered potato chip clusters.

This flavor works well for late night "munchies," Ben and Jerry explained, when you can't decide between salty or sweet.

The verdict? Slashfood gives the flavor an "A," explaining that "the fudge-covered potato chip clusters of 'Late Night Snack' add a nice texture, but the clusters don't get in the way of the smoothness and creaminess of the ice cream and caramel."

Renegade San Francisco ice cream makers Humphry Slocombe, however, would give it an R, for "rude." Eater National's Raphael Brion writes:

[La]st night famed San Francisco-based ice cream shop Humphry Slocombe tweeted: "Wow, nice new flavor Ben & Jerry. When's the last time you had dinner @Sporksf?"

Turns out that Sporks Restaurant in San Francisco exclusively serves the "After School Special" ice cream produced by Humphry Slocombe which has nearly the identical ingredients...

In an email to Eater, Humphry Slocombe co-owner Jake Godby said Ben & Jerry's "[took] the work of a small neighborhood ice cream shop." Concluding, "Rude."

When Ben & Jerry's responds to the flavor's uncanny similarity with Humphry Slocombe's "After School Special," we'll let you know.

The story Ben & Jerry's will presumably be sticking to is that "Late Night Snack" was inspired after last summer's sketch, "Ladysmith Snack Mambazo," which highlighted how much Fallon and his crew loved Ben & Jerry's ice cream. So, the Vermont-based company sent Fallon ice cream and the idea for a flavor partnership was born, as The Feast explains.

I wish B & J would bring back Rain Forest Crunch. This ice cream was made with naturally grown nuts from the rain forests. The villagers were paid to harvest the nuts instead of cutting down the forest for farming that was only good for 2 years in the same spot, then they had to slash and burn more to farm. The harvesting gave them much more money and did not destroy the rain forest.

Sounds a little weird...But I'm betting it's better than the new "Charlie Sheen" flavor...

That was my first thought, but then again I LOVE Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered pretzels. unlike some other chocolate covered pretzels, these are salted.

The only thing missing from this flavor is chocolate dipped bacon. I saw it at a fair a couple of weeks ago. Much as I love chocolate, that combo didn't seem quite right, any more than fudge covered potato chip clusters.

Ice cream tip. I used to be allergic to milk, no longer. But while allergic i learned how to make my own milk free ice cream so i learned a few tricks. When making ice cream here are some tips. Bring all ingredients ,including your equipment, down to 33 or 34 degrees, basically as close to freezing as possible, without generating ice crystals for they are the bane of smooth goodness.

Buy either a low taste pure alcohol, my favorite was mezzaluna vodka, or something that compliments but at least 35% alcohol. add a shot or two of the booze, as cold as possible, to the mixer in increments, this will slow the formation of ice in the mixture.

also milk free folks try coconut milk and creme and also soy creme to make for a better ice creme, also arrow root powder.

After they sold out, HFCS got added. My daughter is allergic to HFCS, so we spend a lot of time reading ingredients.

Put frozen berries in a food processor, use steel blade. As the berries deconstruct, dribble in cream and sugar. The consistency will change to thick ice cream and you have almost a pure fruit sorbet with the consistency of ice cream. Inexpensive, fast & delicious !

That isn't really Sorbet, because you are putting cream in it, and isn't really Ice cream because there are no eggs. So really it is just frozen berry smoothie.

Here's one with only bananas and walnuts so it's vegan "ice cream", or really frozen fruit puree.
When Bananas are on sale or you have a ton that are destined for Banana bread. Peel them, freeze them put in same food processor with steel blade, pulse, added walnuts or any other flavoring ingredients and then you have a vegan dessert, that is cold, tasty and way less time consuming than Banana Bread.

I'm no stranger to The Munchies :) but I don't think I want sweet and salty in the same taste. Still, I splurge and try it even though Ben & Jerry's is hugely expensive in Costa Rica and we only buy it for special occassions.

I don't usually like the salty-sweet combination, but I'm considering trying it after that hilarious 20-minute bit Jimmy did with Stephen Colbert about it. They managed to start a battle about it!

They should put a chip in the lid like the kind in some greeting cards, so when you open it you would hear Fallon breaking up over how funny he thinks he is.

i love making ice cream, my two best are noyeuax and Black licorice. if you love ice cream, make your own. You'll be amazed at how awful ben and jerry's and hagen Daaz really are in comparison.

At my current work, we make a cool faux ice cream that does not require an ice cream machine. A hot sugar syrup is whipped in to egg yolks and beaten until cool. That mixture is then folded into stiffly whipped cream and the mixture is frozen. Upon hardening ,it has the consistency of soft serve ice cream.

Jilberts Dairy in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan created Moose Tracks many years ago. The company (can't recall the name now) took the ingredients and name. I've never seen this other ice cream maker ever give attribution to the originators. In the spirit of transparency, I looked for a link to cite what I've read in past and can't find it. It's most likely what I read was in print and not made it to the internet.

But now it seems it happens all too often, and I'm sad to think that Ben and Jerry might be doing this. While the Late Night Snack recipe could have been arrived at serendipitously, unfortunately, the Jilberts dairy flavor was taken, name and all.

In looking for the links to attach, I'm saddened to find out that Jilbert's was sold to Deans. At least there won't be any more rip-offs of the recipes/names. But wow.
