Brandon Davies, BYU Forward, Reportedly Dismissed From Team For Having Sex [UPDATED]

First Posted: 03/03/2011 12:06 am EST Updated: 11/09/2012 6:41 am EST

BYU announced on Tuesday that starting forward Brandon Davies was suspended for the rest of the season for violating the school's honor code. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, a source revealed that Davies was dismissed after he admitted to having sex.

Davies is said to be "extremely remorseful" and "heartbroken" over the situation and he's accepted the punishment.

More from the Salt Lake Tribune:

Among other things, the honor code forbids students from engaging in premarital sex, and admonishes them to "live a chaste and virtuous life."

BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins reportedly said that the Honor Code Office is reviewing the situation and will determine Davies' future with the school.

Davis was averaging 11.1 points and a team-high 6-2 rebounds per game. The Cougars are currently the No. 3 ranked team in the country.

Editor's note: Links and references in this story have been updated to clarify the sources of information. An earlier version linked to AP coverage but referenced the Salt Lake Tribune as the source. A reference to Davies' "girlfriend" has been removed as it's unclear who was being referenced in the reported admission.

[#] "Live Free or Die" [#]

To Anyone -- "Who Still Cares",
Except for a precious few (who wrote a comment, and had the courage to actually express an opinion derived of independent thought) from what I gathered, after reading a multitude of comments, and having pondered much as I have (with much dismay) as I have read the various "thoughts" expressed concerning the disrespectful, arrogant, and supposedly special, "i.e. exempt from the rules of a private school", individual in question, [who if he were a member of the Armed Forces of The United States of America he could, and in many cases would, find himself facing the prospect of something called a "court marshal", and some time in "the stockade".
Let us do more working, studying, pondering, praying, with faith in Christ, with charity for all. Our Father loved us so much, that he "sent his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
Jesus does live, this I know. He is The Lord of Hosts, The Prince of Peace, and he is our Saviour and Redeemer, "rely wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save", who is Jesus the Christ, "the only begotten Son of God". He lives, I know him; worship the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, excercise our faith unto repentance, and receive peace and joy everlasting.

Peace...

Wow. Remind me never to send my kids, if I ever have them, to that school.

Jim McMahon used to brag about walking around campus with a beer in his hand and the other five of the six pack in the other. Also, I heard on the radio today here in LV that Davies was ratted out by one of his teammates. Apparently the player, who lives across the hall from Davies, saw his girlfriend coming out of his room. He went to the coach with the accusation and was told it would be handled internally. This wasn't good enough for him so he took it to the school administration. Davies is/was one of only three non-Mormons on the team. Whether or not all of this is true, I don't know. Just tellin' what I heard.

I'm sure he's the only BYU athlete who has ever violated that code. I'm curious as to how this became public knowledge. What an honorable thing for BYU to do...expose, humiliate, and dismiss this guy from the team - guilty of committing the most natural act of humankind. Conservative values at work.

too innocent ---

This is being made into a huge international publicity win for the mormon machine
--- millions of dollars in publicity for
a---- the moral code of mormonism
b--- showing how they include the Black guy and are fair with him
etc etc etc

Bosses and their employees have sex every day in the United States in spite of policies against it. Of all the college and university presidents in America, probably 99% of them engaged in pre-marital sex. Of all of our nation's senators and congressmen, probably 99% of them had pre-marital sex. Of the presidents of Fortune 500 companies, probably 99% engaged in pre-parital sex. We'd be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of professional athletes who have not had pre-marital sex. People who engage in pre-marital sex in America are in the norm, not the other way around. So let's punish a college kid so we can set an example for all of America that pre-marital sex is not to be tolerated.

The BYU honor code is well known. Brandon Davies knew of the code. He wasn't forced to attend BYU. BYU should be commended, not ridiculed, for their enforcement of the honor code. Countless other schools turn blind eyes to far worse behavior as they pursue championships.

How disrespectful that this young man's personal business is all over the nation. BYU should have handled this is a better way. And, how did they find out about it anyway?

On the radio today, the commentator made a great point: does BYU hold this standard to every person attending their school? Or are they singling out those that are a bit darker in skin then all the others or ones that play sports or? how many others have been kicked out of school because of not following their rules?
10:36 PM on 03/04/2011
BYU holds this standard to every unmarried person attending the school. There are a lot of marriages within 4 weeks after couples start dating.

Didn't know you could book the Mystic Room of the temple that quickly.

Married in 4 weeks? No wonder Utah is the highest per capita state for mailed pornos.

well, i hope all of the sports players who are considering going to byu, will reconsider and go to a more realistic school.

Whether I agree with it or not, i respect BYU for upholding their honor code...you know what you are signing up for when you go to BYU.

I have to simply shake my head on this one. I respect the enforcement of BYU's rules, I just don't know how much I can appreciate such an "interesting" rule in the first place...

He could transfer to a Catholic College like Notre Dame, which lauds star athletes who have premarital sex.

Them's the rules!

I may disagree with the honor code at BYU, but don't get upset if they enforce the code.
06:30 PM on 03/04/2011
The NCAA should step in and allow the kid to transfer to another school next year. He is currently being held hostage by BYU where they can not only dismiss him from the university but also make it impossible for him to transfer to another institution and play next year. Free Davies.
07:14 PM on 03/04/2011
I hope he's able to transfer or go pro. I don't know if he's Mormon, but if he's not and he just went there for the basketball scholarship, then this will be a lesson to other kids to know ahead of time what you're getting into. Look at the school as a whole, not just the basketball program. Maybe get advise from other students who went there before you.
10:42 PM on 03/04/2011
He understood the honor code before he decided to go there. He is NOT the first to be kicked out for not running faster than the girls.

He knew the rules. He knew what happens if you break the rules.

Why are liberals surprised when rules are enforced?
11:32 PM on 03/04/2011
No one is surprised. They are just discussing his options. Surely you understand that more secualar universities will be willing to take this young man without the sex rule in place.
