Meet The World's 'Most Typical' Person: National Geographic VIdeo

First Posted: 03/03/2011 9:45 am Updated: 07/09/2012 11:50 am

In a world of seven billion people, the "most typical" person is male, right-handed and of Chinese descent, according to National Geographic. But not for long -- as the report states, by 2030 the Indian population will outstrip that of China.

As part of a year-long series on global population, the publication has just produced a stunning new video titled "Are You Typical?" which compiles global data to produce a composite of the world's "most typical" person, along with other fascinating statistics.

Check out more on global population from National Geographic here.

Why is the face so fuzzy?
03:53 AM on 03/09/2011
It´s fuzzy because it has been made by overlapping image after images. This softens the image.

What does the average face of humanity look like?
There is one photograph that truly answers that question.

David, Your link is interesting. However the picture it displays looks typically Indians rather than the average physiognomy of humanity. Some data in the software probably were inaccurate.

Nothing wrong with the software at all Pierre. The Face of Humanity has the world population averaged as it is demographically. It looks like it does because there are only about 16% Caucasian people on the planet. A mixture of Asian, African and Indian gives almost 65% so it is no wonder the Face looks as it does. I did it twice and the same face appears both times using different people and the same ethnic combination. So there you go.

han chinese is a made-up ethnicity, something the chinese communist party invented. there are so many differences among han chinese (genetic, cultural, linguistic, religious) that you could come up with 100 ethnic groups from it if you apply the same principles that are applied to other enhnic groups.

this illusion is due to chinese establishment trying to unite their people under one national identity, to prevent the eminent breaking apart of china.

You are wrong. An ethnicity is not a biological term it is a cultural term. Han Chinese are those who speak Mandarin or one of the many Chinese dialects, use Chinese characters as a written language and subscribe to basic Chinese cultural lifeways. It is a well established academic term that precedes the PRC and the CCP by decades. It is no more a made-up ethnicity than Latino, Hispanic, or African-American. The problem with the NG piece is that typological thginking is at variance with biological reality which is based on individual and populational variation not the definition of invariate types.

allright, simple question: do you consider muslim han chinese in the south west to be "han chinese", cuz they dont seem to fit too much to your "basic chinese cultural lifeways"

That's typical. I think I went to school with that guy, and I didn't even know he was the one. So does he get a special ID card entitling him to the typical kinds of presents and perks that get rained on special people?

But wait. If he is special in his being typical, that would seem not to make him typical, because special people can't by definition be typical.

This is confusing me. ... which of course is also typical.
