Alberto Granado, Che Companion And 'Motorcycle Diaries' Inspiration, Dead At 88

Alberto Granado Dies

PAUL HAVEN   03/ 5/11 04:05 PM ET   AP

HAVANA — Alberto Granado, who accompanied Ernesto 'Che' Guevara on a 1952 journey of discovery across Latin America that was immortalized in Guevara's memoir and on-screen in "The Motorcycle Diaries," died in Cuba on Saturday. He was 88.

Granado, an Argentine who had lived in Cuba since 1961, died of natural causes Saturday morning, according to Cuban state-run television, which gave no other details.

Granado and Guevara's road trip, begun on a broken-down motorcycle they dubbed La Poderosa, or "The Powerful," awoke in Guevara a social consciousness and political convictions that would help turn him into one of the most iconic revolutionaries of the 20th century.

The two travelers both kept diaries that were used as background for the 2004 movie, produced by Robert Redford and directed by Walter Salles.

Granado was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Cordoba, Argentina, and befriended Guevara as a child.

As young medical students, the two witnessed deep poverty across the continent – principally Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela – and their stay at a Peruvian leper colony left a particularly deep impression.

They parted ways in Venezuela, where Granado stayed on to work at a clinic treating leprosy patients. Guevara continued on to Miami, then returned to Buenos Aires to finish his studies.

Guevara would later join Fidel and Raul Castro as they sailed from exile in Mexico to Cuba aboard a yacht called the Granma in 1956. Their small band of rebels ultimately toppled dictator Fulgencio Batista on New Year's Day 1959.

Granado visited Cuba at Guevara's invitation in 1960 and moved to Havana the following year with his family, teaching biochemistry at Havana University. He had lived in Cuba ever since, maintaining a low profile.

One of his sons, also called Alberto Granado, is head of Cuba's Africa House, a center in Havana that celebrates African culture.

In his authoritative biography of Guevara, Jon Lee Anderson wrote that Granado was "barely five feet tall and had a huge beaked nose, but he sported a barrel chest and a footballer's sturdy bowed legs; he also possessed a good sense of humor and a taste for wine, girls, literature and rugby."

According to Cuban television, Granado requested that his body be cremated and his ashes spread in Cuba, Argentina and Venezuela. Funeral arrangements were not announced.

Guevara was captured and killed by soldiers in Bolivia in 1967 as he tried to foment revolution in the Andean nation.

The guy was a friend and fan of Che his entire life. I make a fool out of myself mourning a supporter of Marxism and the murderers committed in its name by Alberto's friend.

While Motorcycle Diaries was a great film unfortunately it neglected some of the much less glamorous and brutal aspects of Che's life. Che was known for his summary executions of so-called "counter-revoluntionaries."

Motorcycle diaries was about the period when Che was 23 years old. How do you suppose the director should have crowbared those events into the film when they occurred almost a decade later?

BTW, how many people did your government execute after WW2?

Agreed. Motorcycle Diaries was a movie about 2 guys who went on a trip and learned things about themselves and their countrymen. That was one of the great things about the movie. It didn't judge or present a case for our against Che's ambitions in later life. One of these just happened to be Che. It could've just as well been about two other guys.

The movie is a lovely story. Any young person might understand the two young men(of privileged backgrounds) who set out on motorcycles to tour the country. A couple of buddies, with no thought of politics, who discover more than they could imagine.

He had quite an impressive life, and he benefited so many people. He was a one-man band with a big sound. It'd be nice to know that people understand his massive contribution to humanity and science and not just his association with Che.

He lived his life as the slave of a dictator.

A pampered slave, an educated slave, but still a slave.

And he volunteered for slavery.

You, obviously, don't know anything about Alberto Granado but insist on injecting your ideological vitriol in here.

He was a friend and supporter of a movement that helped overthrow a dictator (Batista); one who with the CIA's help preempted Cuba's 1952 elections, suspended its constitution, rescinded most political liberties, favored the wealthy class, fell in bed with the Mafia, censored the media, and killed tens of thousands of his own people.

Batista was a thug, a criminal, a U.S.-backed toad, and a dictator by every measure.

The regime Mr. Granado supported, and of which he was an integral part brought literacy, health care, security, and dignity to Cuba's people.

Mr. Granado embraced Cuba's people, and dedicated his whole life to helping them.

Granado was a "real man" Taffy; and you are just too small a person to be judging him.

Good movie. If you've never seen "The Motorcycle Diaries" and you have Netflix it's available to view streaming.

Why does the right always chime in with complaints about someone when in actuality they agree with them?
