2012 Candidates

The Washington Post:

If pessimism is not creeping on little cat's feet into Republicans' thinking about their 2012 presidential prospects, that is another reason for pessimism. This is because it indicates they do not understand that sensible Americans, who pay scant attention to presidential politics at this point in the electoral cycle, must nevertheless be detecting vibrations of weirdness emanating from people associated with the party.

Will is correct on Huckabee.

Gingrich stole the anti-colonial idea from Dinesh D'Souza, and it is an eerily predictive hypothesis.

Gingrich said he had heard the explanation from some one else. He just didn't mention D'Souza, by name.

Huckabee, Santorum, Palin, Bachmann, Cain and the like will be there to sling mud, lie, make up stories to blast on FOX and question Obama's citizenship while Pawlenty, Barbour, Huntsman, Daniels, Issa and Romney stand back and watch.

Huckabee has spent to much time at Faux breathing that air. He is a very, very scary man.

I initially dismissed Dr. Will as a dour, bowtie wearing Ivy Leaguer espousing a reactionary world view from a privileged perspective.  Then, after regularly encountering him in downtown Bethesda, doing his grocery shopping, and standing patiently in line with the people who after getting off the Metro to pick up a few things at CVS, I realized that, he, is indeed dour and does wear bowties, but at the least, among the conservative commentators does have a regular interaction with the real world of business owners, those who spend hours on trains each week to get to and from work, and minimum wage earners.

Dr. Will, along with other thoughtful conservatives such as  David Brooks or Peggy Noonan are not the bogeymen of progressivism.  Their opinions may seem wrong, but they are usually well-reasoned and demonstrate a deep recognition of the challenges facing the county.  And when they, along with Joe Scarborough and occasionally, Pat Buchanan, inveigh against the pseudo-intellectualism but, in reality, anti-intellectual demagoguery of Sarahpalin, Mike Huckabee, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, Newt Gingrich, Pete King,  Michele Bachmann, or Glen Beck they carry weight.

Wills writing on politics, like his studies of baseball, are thoughtful.  I, for one, welcome his voice and hope that some who might otherwise be stirred by the racism, religious intolerance, and scorn of those who are in need, actually read and think about what he states.  I would like the MSNBC hosts to invite his participation on Morning Joe, Hardball, etc.  He needs greater exposure.

After reading this, the only thing that keeps coming back to me (like a bad taco) is Haley Barbour as a "plausible" presidential candidate.

Newt Gingrich is not only delusional, he is grossly irresponsible and a flame thrower. His entire career as a politician and TV personality speaks to that fact.
