These aren't plate lunches as we all know and love them. It's food used as illustrations.
Still cool, tho.

I love Hawaii. Every time I go , I really don't feel I am on vacation until I have my plate lunch and a spam musubi. Aloha!
Besides, Hawaii is like Texas. While they are states, they will alway really be a nations, or a state of mind.

I've never been to Hawaii, so I've never had an authentic plate lunch. But I have gone to a L&L Bbq restaurant. I like their mixed grilled with rice, macaroni salad, plus a side of spam musubi. Oh so wrong, by oh so right. It satisfies a very specific craving.

for the record, you will NEVER find a plate lunch that looks even remotely like any of the things in the video.

also, her description of the loco moco isn't quite correct. it is hamburger steak on rice topped with two, usually easy over, eggs and smothered in gravy. i then smother that in ketchup. fricken ono!

Who says eating out has to be expensive in the islands. 4-7 bucks just about anywhere will get you a fill you up all day plate lunch. Just don't swim for at least an hour after partaking in a plate lunch. You will sink.

Actually, that's an old wives´ tale. Recent studies have proven that you can eat right before jumping in the water without anything happening to you.

I beg to differ -- the carb load and fats will keep you floating for hours on end!

Truly, there is NOT MUCH in this world better than the mixed plate at Rainbow DI......unless you are a devotee of Libby's manapua (in the pretty pink boxes!). Grew up in Honolulu, left after high school, back in the early 2000's for a few years, son lives there now (USMC).....and not a day goes by that I don't have a fond memory....soooo many ono grinds!!

Despite the fact that she might be butchering some Hawaiian words/names (which I do not fault her on because its hard for anybody who hasn't had a Hawaiian upbringing pronounce the language correctly); I give her props for the innovative history lesson on Hawaii.
11:31 PM on 03/07/2011
Yea. I thought it was this was a really cute and funny video. I was impressed with her pronunciation of Hawaiian words. It could have been much worse. She still makes the mistake of using "Hawaiian" incorrectly, saying "the first Hawaiian born President" instead of "first Hawaii-born President" or "first President from Hawaii." I know it's nitpicking but I run into this constantly and it's my pet peeve. In the Islands, Hawaiian means the ethnicity Native Hawaiian.

Ex: "Supported by a Hawaii-born president friendly to their cause" -- Honolulu Advertiser
