Erik Spoelstra Rips Media For 'Crygate': Heat Coach Blame Reporters Searching For Sensationalism (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/07/11 05:14 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

After the Miami Heat lost their fourth straight game on Sunday, coach Erik Spoelstra told the media that a couple of his players were crying in the locker room.

One day later, the Heat coach ripped the media and said he was shocked that his quote made the news.

"I think the media can probably take anything I say and turn it into a story," Spoelstra said. "I was shocked when TD [Heat media relations man Tim Donovan] told me about it this morning that it's actually making the news. I think you guys can be a little more creative than that."

He also said that "nobody was whimpering" in the locker room and reporters are "really searching for sensationalism now."

C'mon, Coach, you didn't really expect no one to pick up on the whole "they were crying" thing, did you?? Since LeBron and Bosh joined, people have been wanting to see the Heat fail and are looking for any way to undermine them. Spoelstra just added fuel to the fire.

P.S. I'm guessing Spoelstra's days are numbered.

Gee, I don't blame them if they cried. That was a lousy ending. More than crying, I had to laugh at the sour grapes from D Wade, now everybody is happy because they are losing? Why isn't the media all over that? Probably because D Wade is the darling, and Spoelstra they are just waiting for him to screw up. It will probably take the whole year and the playoffs before this team will jell, if it ever does. If I were the other players on the team, I would be crying. Who are they and what do they do? With these big 3, you never hear about the rest of the team. Bosh too, he is like the third banana, he will have to shine big to get any publicity, if he fails of course he will. He is the best and most underrated player and I am afraid he will get lost in this trio. He has real talent and the other two are sporatic and you really can't count on them, as we have noticed in the end.

And by the way as a celtics fan i hate to say this.....but the next coach of the Heat is going to be Doc Rivers, who's contract is up after this year, and still lives in florida!

Maybe if you DONT have a championship celebration before you even play a game, and maybe if your alleged superstar doesn't say he is going to win 7 championships before he plays a game.....then maybe people wont revel in your demise, just maybe!!!

well actually people don't revel in their demise ...oh you have those who brought the media commands from day one especially in light of the cavalier fans following their sorry excuse of an owner's ineptitude to sign James nor surround him with serviceable parts that could occasionally help them win a championship... Please James,Wade,Bosh let this little act by the media show without a shadow of doubt that they really h/at.e you guys and Miami and may it give let you get back to your form earlier when you guys were threatening to road wins record and may it carry on over to the nba title....and when the media be ready to kiss up to you tell them to kiss your black @sses too as well as all the lebronhat/ers too

hum let me slow down a bit or possibly go get some lunch....

hopefully this little stint by the media give you guys the proper refocusing to the form you had when you won 21-22 games and threatened to break the nba record for road wins....

the media will be kissing up to you when your about ready to win the title but tell them to kiss your black @sses because that time will come

LeBron's been a crybaby his whole career. Remember, he was too busy huffing and puffing to make it to the podium after he choked every year in the playoffs with the Cavs?

Riley's gross miscalculations have come to haunt him, IMO. When this team was put together, barring all the fanfare and the braggadocio of going 82-0 and winning 7 rings, most of us knew this: If LeBron, Dwade and Bosh came close to their scoring average of last season of 25-25-20 respectively (total 70 points), they would have to rely on the rest of the team for at least 20 points. Entrusted to this task are Miller, Bibbi, Jones and others on the bench. Then, with Haslem done for the season, the team gravitated toward average.

After the All-Star break, most teams have figured out the Heats' weaknesses. Most of us will correctly assume that the playoffs for the Heat will be short-lived. Riley will frown, Spoelstra could be fired, and Heats fans will recoil into that fantasy that could have been.

Unless the Heat sign an average center really cheap, more tears will be shed next season. Shackled by the salary cap and the $120 million paid to each of the 3 SUPERSTARS, does anyone see any progress toward a ring?

most? but damn sure not all....best of 7 and I feel that the Heat will be more than up for the challenge....though I wil admit right now the Bulls are playing the best ball but that dont mean that the Heat are slouches but that Orlando game has to be unacceptable and should never happen again...the Bulls game was a one pt loss that could oviously had went the other way

I would bet anybody in here that Erik Spoelstra will be fired after this season. Just watch the greedy and desperate Pat Riley step in like he did to Stan Van Gundy (forced him out).

Anyhow, back to crybabies table, from now on the media need to provide kleenex boxes for after game press.
12:03 PM on 03/08/2011
I wouldn't take that bet, but I do think that Riley wants no part of coaching this mess. Even if they weren't a bunch of head cases, the structural problems in this team pretty much doom them to being at best a pretty good regular season team. Every time they show him in the stands, he looks like he's having a gut cramp.
11:05 AM on 03/08/2011
I know it's late in the season to change coaches, but why is Spoelstra still there??

I agree w you but I don't believe the average sports fan has to consider themself a nobody. They should play hard ( and I dont doubt the Big 3's desire to win) but they should go home and enjoy their life and forget about. Many of us enjoy the circus they have created but dont have any ill will against them personally.

two sayings from back home

"i hear you talking" and 'show and prove"...if you think you got something for 250 lbs 6' 8" LeBron i'd like to see that in person...and since you and i have both boxed you know there is something to having height and reach on someone ESPECIALLY when you're as athletic as these guys are...you still have that kind of endurance? i highly doubt it
11:07 AM on 03/08/2011
Compared to hockey players they are...How about O'Byrne finishing his shift with his face sliced..
Hockey players are typically incredibly tough.
