BP CEO Robert Dudley Apologizes For Gulf Oil Spill

Bp Ceo Robert Dudley Apology

First Posted: 03/08/11 03:29 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

HOUSTON - BP Plc's (BP.L) (BP.N) Chief Executive Robert Dudley issued an industry-wide apology for the worst offshore spill in U.S. history at a high-profile energy conference on Tuesday.

"This is the first chance I have had to address such a large gathering of industry colleagues and the first thing I want to say is that I am sorry for what happened last year," Dudley told the CERAWeek conference in a speech titled "New Era, New Responsibilities."

BP's mile-deep Macondo well ruptured on April 20, triggering an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that killed 11 people, spewed more than 4 million barrels of oil into the sea and spurred a months-long ban on U.S. deepwater drilling.

The spill has cost BP nearly $41 billion so far, including a $20 billion fund to compensate those hurt by the disaster.
Dudley said BP was working to earn back the trust of the industry, state and federal leaders and Gulf Coast residents, in part by upping efforts to improve safety. That includes shutdowns of two offshore oil and gas production platforms to repair faulty equipment, and shutting down a producing field to enable pipeline integrity work.

BP has been heavily criticized for failing to shut down the Macondo operation when repeated problems with drilling arose in the days before the deadly blowout.

Dudley did not identify the field or platforms he said were shut down for repair work.
He also said BP would not sign contracts with drillers whose rigs don't meet BP standards, "and there are a number of cases where we have either turned away rigs or are negotiating for modifications which could bring the rig up to our standards."

to call this a "spill" shows the lack of accountability that is really at play here... like calling Hiroshima another bombing run.

I know - why don't you REALLY apologize and donate billions of your profits to the states affected, and also to many other Green causes? Doesn't that sound like a good and noble thing to do, Mr. Dudley??? If you do that, or even part of that, then we'll know you're sorry.

Gotta go. Everyone have a nice one, even you, Peter Combs. Still think your whole, Shucks, "I'm just a fisherman in small village" is BP, PR, BS.

talks cheap. how about blowin some whistles on your pardners like cheniburton, etc. that destroyed the wildlife, culture and eventually human lives for decades to come in and around our once pristine gulf.

Dead dolphins continue to wash up on shore; a thick layer of your goo remains on the bottom, as well as floating around in massive pockets, both sucking any air out of the water. Marshes, beaches still thick with oil. Nix the PR campaign and continue cleaning up your damn mess. These BP people have absolutely no conscience and or any hint of respect for human, animal or plant life. They have a giant hole in their souls and think killing, maiming, destroying for money, will somehow fill it and close it forever but it doesn't so they just keep on their destructive path, avoiding any personal responsibility for literally being killers of any and all living things. May God forgive you because we haven't!

If BP actually gave a good gd dmn it would do to the Gulf area, spend whatever it takes to clean up the environment and fully fund an all-out scientific research project to find ways to create virtually 99.999% safe drilling methods, assist Congress and every nation which has an oil well in making it safe and in preparing iron-clad regulations. And finally, paying without litigation, each and every claim for damages, loss of business and future earnings, set-up a $500 billion educational loan fund interest free, for everyone family affected, and that would be a good start.

That's called accountability and responsibility and BP doesn't believe in or subscribe to either. BP is like its own country, principality, answering and being responsible to no one, except themselves. What they did should have been considered an act of war. Seriously, BP came in, deliberately destroyed a major part of the United States and got away with it and our President hasn't said one word since. I used to think peps in the U.S. who spoke of revolutions against corporations and our government's duplicity in helping them take over and completely destroy life, including ours, were paranoid alarmist. Sorry guys, you were and are absolutely,100% right.

F & F,

Hey writ, how many shills have BP and Haliburton hired to fix their image and how many fact based stories have they used their influence and ext0rtionate tactics to quell? I will venture it is a very impressive number, just like they did with the Libya/Lockerbie and release of the bomber for oil contracts.

Indeed. BP play acted assistance throughout the period when they were trying to cap the well. Once they had, they left the region high and dry, and then began a marketing campaign to grease their image as caring -- which they didn't. It's the classic psychopathic behavior of the corporation. Dudley's apology is just more of the same.

They're ever so sorry about destroying the Gulf, and if we'll just be so kind as to let them resume unregulated drilling, they promise promise promise that it'll NEVER happen again.

destroying the Gulf? Destroyed? not even close, if you visit down there along the shore now you could spend a day finding any oil...including underwater...

damaged , absolutely yes..."Destroyed" is pure hyperbole.

Sorry, but the number of species of wildlife and fishing beds that have been destroyed and that are still dying as a direct result of BP/Haliburton's cr!minal negligence is increasing daily, not decreasing, and that is not hyperbole, it is scientific fact.

How about mentioning the CLAIMS PROCESS where only one claim has been finalized? You cant apologize without making amends.

Try again, people have taken what they were offered, not what they deserved, because the BP puppet who is handling the fund is dragging it out to the point to where these people cannot survive. Do your homework. How much does BP pay you anyway for being their shill?
05:01 PM on 03/09/2011
" Do your homework" is what we're asking of you, Peter, with regard to current scientific results re the spill. There's one on the HuffPost under GREEN right now, regarding NASA scientist confirming acid rain from the Gulf spill. Check it out. Do your homework, Peter.

Why was he apologizing to other oil companies rather to the hundreds of thousands of victims whose lives have been ruined because of this monumental mistake?
01:48 PM on 03/09/2011
Most of you seem to be forgetting that Robert Dudley was NOT the CEO at the time of the spill, he took over after Tony Hayward made mistake after mistake after mistake, whining that he wanted his life back. So stop blaming this guy. He's even from Hattiesburg, Mississippi - his home was affected by this problem that he didn't cause as well.

Doesn't matter. Just a new face, who sound more like us, as a PR move. If continue to work for a corporation that kills and maims people, animals and plants, you can't claim a "I was just following orders" or "I didn't see it or "I wasn't in charge at the time," PR defense. Sorry, if you're part of a corporation like that, you're still part of the problem.
