Kate Winslet Opens Up About Divorce From Sam Mendes In British Vogue

Kate Winslet Divorce

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/08/11 03:36 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

In addition to sporting a new, shorter hairdo on the cover of this month's British Vogue, Kate Winslet opened up to the magazine about her divorce from director Sam Mendes last March, with whom she has a son.

Winslet has one daughter with her first husband Jim Threapleton, a British director, whom she divorced in 2001. She met Mendes that same year, while he was serving as the artistic director of London's Donmar Warehouse theater. Following their 2003 marriage, Mendes directed Winslet in 2008's Revolutionary Road, in which she starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. The couple was married for seven years.

Four months following their separation, she was briefly linked to male model Louis Dowler.

Winslet revealed her secrets to coping with divorce in Vogue's cover story, including avoiding therapy, exercising, and striving for happiness.

On being alone:
"Experiencing those moments of being alone...is a very, very weird flooring and exposing position to be in when you're just not used to it...But I've never been lonely. And with my kids Mia and Joe that remains the case."

On refusing psychotherapy:
"One of the reasons I've never done intensive psychotherapy or any of that stuff is that if there's anything in me that needs fixing, I want to know that I can rely on my own intuition to fix it."

On exercising post-split:
“That’s the main reason I took it up...But I do feel...I don’t know... part of, I suppose, my way out of everything, has been really taking care of myself. I think that comes from an awareness that my children really need me, and they need me to be the healthiest version of myself that I can possibly be."

On being happy:
“I actually keep saying it out loud. Last night I went out for a drink with two friends and, as we were walking, I said, ‘God, you know, I feel so good.’ Not in a, ‘Wow! I feel so good!’ way, but just in that quiet centered way. I’m almost surprised by it. I feel well, I feel healthy. I feel clear. I feel centered.”

You act like she's in a magazine every week. This is one article of only two interviews she's done lately- she has a mini-series on HBO coming out and she is doing promotion for it.

classy woman, great actress, enough said!

Why is between her and Sam and I respect her for keeping it that way.
01:54 PM on 03/10/2011
Then she shouldnt have done such an interview in the first place. Plus they should have given this a completely different title. Stating that she "opened up" means she mentions WHY and she did not.

Untrue.

I'm sure she meant no harm but I honestly hope that her characterization of psychotherapy as as a tool for those who lack "intuition" doesn't dissuade people with serious mental health problems from getting the help they need.

A lot of times celebrities weigh in on the topic of mental illness with no real understanding of the subject. Suggesting that seeking psychotherapy is somehow akin to weakness is not helpful and may well be stigmatizing.

She didn't say that at all. She said that she wanted to rely on her own intuition to fix her problems. I don't think that is jab at those who need psychotherapy. But I do believe it is overused. I have friends who go to therapy because they don't know how to sit and figure their problems out on their own. They honestly need someone else to figure it out. Metal illness is a completely different can of worms. It is a chemical imbalance.

Counselling isn't about having the therapist find solutions for the client. It's about encouraging a client to identify her/his own strengths so s/he may be better able to cope in the future. Oh, and by the way, mental illness is not "a chemical imbalance."

Well she could be in denial of her own problems. Two divorces already. Sometimes a person needs outside help. I don't know her...maybe she can handle her problems with her intuition. I guess we'll see.

British women (maybe its European women tool) seem different to me………in a good way. And the only thing I can put my finger on is they don’t seem to be afraid to embrace and exude their innate femininity. They always seem to be able to project confidence, strength and self assuredness and yet remain graceful and elegant doing it.

And though Grace Kelly was American by birth she had the same qualities. Watching her still makes me wish cloning was legal.

She's so beautiful and classy. She reminds me of Grace Kelly in more ways than one. Just lovely.

Its called an interview dear. And in an interview she is asked questions. Its not like she is sitting in a room by herself talking to no one in particular. Interviews usually work like this: A journalist sits down with a tape recorder with the subject and asks them questions. The subject answers. The journalist then omits their questions and writes the article around the subjects answers. Hope this helps.

Perhaps someone who will likely soon launch into her third marriage (based on her patterns) is not a good self-psychotherapist? She's got a negative history that needs to be addressed or it will continue to be repeated. IMO.

Hope you are well Shaun

That she's fairly young and will probably soon head into a third marriage. She seems to hookup and marry quickly, with obviously bad results. Don't get me wrong; I think she is fabulously talented and beautiful. IMO she needs to address a few things and break this pattern she has gotten herself into unless of course, she wants to be another Elizabeth Taylor.

What is her "negative history"? There is a 54% divorce rate on this country dear - and most go on to marry a second time. If she has a "negative history" than so do millions of other people.

Refusing therapy to rely on your intuition sounds like the beginning of a deep, dark depresson. Getting help is good, why do so many people shun it?!?

At least seek a year of counseling, for Pete's sake. Pride. Ego.

I think the healthier we are, the more open to therapy we are. And not just cognitive short term therapy, but truly getting to face things and learn about ourselves and our choices and behaviors. Divorce is a huge opportunity for growth. Or not.

That picture is incredible. Apologies for being so shallow, I prefer her and her "look" to any South American super model.
