Apple iOS 4.3 Update Released: See What's New

Apple Ios Apple Tv Updates

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/09/11 04:11 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

Ars Technica reports that Apple has released the latest version of its mobile software, iOS 4.3, which was announced at the iPad 2 event last week. The update was supposed to drop on March 11, but Apple chose to unleash it Wednesday alongside with an upgrade for Apple TV.

Available for download via iTunes, iOS 4.3 applies to iPhone 4 (GSM only), iPhone 3GS, fourth-generation iPod Touch, and iPad. The update will come preinstalled on iPad 2 devices when they are released on March 11. The recently released Verizon iPhone, however, will not support the download.

Mobile users who upgrade to iOS 4.3 can look forward to faster Web browsing in Safari and easier media sharing via home WiFi networks. The update also brings a personal WiFi hotspot feature to GSM iPhone 4 devices, and it lets users assign either a screen-lock or a mute-volume function to the iPad's physical switch.

But mobile devices aren't the only Apple products getting a software tweak today. Apple TV software update 4.2 offers new streaming content options for baseball and basketball fans. MLB.TV and NBA Game Time will now be available, starting at $20 per month and $65 per month, respectively. TUAW writes that the Apple TV upgrade also includes a enhanced sound for Netflix content and some refinements to the user interface. There will also be iOS 4.3-compatible improvements for AirPlay, which lets users stream content from iOS devices to their Apple TV.

Together, these upgrades aim at a more unified home entertainment system for Apple devotees.

I'm just here wondering if Apple gives their Engineers any vacation. I mean they keep coming out with new products and upgrades, they gonna burn themselves out!

It will make the Safari browser even faster? Well, it sure as hell couldn't make it any SLOWER. My iPad over home wifi is slower at browsing than my 3yr old 3G android phone....

the one thing that's not mentioned about the Hotspot feature is that if you have an unlimited data plan -- like I do -- you have to downgrade to a 4gb data plan....makes sense

On the remote, simultaneously press the Menu and play buttons. This will reboot the unit and download the update.

The iPod Touch 2nd generation has an older processor that can't handle the new iOS efficiently. The same applies for early iPhones. Yes it's frustrating but technology and innovation are moving so fast - and everyone now demands constant progress, that companies like Apple can't adapt new operating systems to old processor architecture.

Nonsense. Apple could release a maintenance release to fix their buggy software for the version that runs on my iPod. My support is now ended because Apple is only interested in a business model that will incrementally ensure profits and force me to buy an expensive slightly improved version. Once again a business solution doesn't provide excellent products only products to extract the most money from consumers. Don't get me started on crap iTunes software.

Won't ever have to concern myself with this or another iOS. Nor will I have to jailbreak my former iFone to get the same functionality built in on my new Android phone.

Good for you - but whether an iPhone or the latest Android device, you're buying into technological obsolescence - not necessarily deliberate planned but the nature of the fast moving innovation animal. However for the time being does not having the latest this or that really affect one's life too much? Probably not.

How wonderful for you! But my Android phone that was released last October won't accept the latest OS update and it can't handle Flash 10 with the current OS. On top of that it's not overly user friendly and has far too much lag time when trying to perform simple functions like ending a phone call or going from an application to the home screen. The battery life is really miserable but at least I can change out the battery for a new one if I've remembered to charge up a replacement one to carry around with me. Multi tasking eats up the battery even faster so I'm constantly going back and turning off applications after I've used them. So much for that convenience. Twitter in particular will eat my phone alive.

If you have the basic need to feel like a 'rebel' (even though you're not) then by all means get an android phone and have at it. But when this contract is up I'm getting an iPhone. I've never had the problems with an apple product that I've had with this phone.

On EVERY platform, some will have problems and others won't. Apple is not a panacea either. (if you don't believe me, I'll mail you my iPhone 3GS and you can see firsthand what it does (the network settings panel freezes when loading and eventually crashes, compelling me to power off/on). I've never jailbroken it. And if you can fix it, without doing a hard reset, so much the better. These little disposable items are not meant to be fixed (or programmed properly in the first place, since it is about planned obsolescence, making 'em cheap, and as such using more resources than what are necessary to begin with). Just a quick hard reset. And what I say equally applies to Android and other platforms too.

when your iphone is connected to your computer and itunes automatically starts there should be an iphone icon in the left side panel under "Devices". click on that and right there in the middle should be a button that says "check for update". it'll take awhile because the update is almost 500 mb.
