Brendon Ayanbadejo, Ravens Linebacker, Speaks In Favor Of Gay Marriage (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/09/11 03:36 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

With the Maryland House of Delegates set to vote on Friday whether to allow same-sex couples to marry, a Baltimore Ravens linebacker decided to weigh in on the subject.

Brendon Ayanbadejo, who has written about his support for gay marriage before, teammed up with Equality Maryland and posted a video voicing his opinion on love and marriage.

"This should not be a subjective issue. Gay and lesbian couples want to marry for similar reasons as we all do: love and commitment," Ayanbadejo said. "It's time to allow them the opportunity to build a family through marriage. It's a matter of fairness. This is why I'm asking Marylanders to join me in supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples."

He's stepping out into uncharted territory as an pro athlete, good for him. Too bad the national media wont pay attention to this story unless he's a star player.

I tried to avoid clicking on this story because I assumed the guy made some banal homophobic remarks.

I'm happy I was wrong. Good on him!

by far the best line: "churches can always have their beliefs, but government is supposed to treat everyone the same."

Kudos to Brendon Ayanbadejo! Well done, sir! I hope Maryland joins the home of the brave and back this marriage equality legislation. Ayanbedejo is correct: government MUST treat all citizens equally.

I am 100% conservative. I am also 100% in favor of all gay rights which includes marriage and everything other right everyone else enjoys here in America.

You ARE 100 percent conservative, as yours is a truly conservative stance. Too bad your position is so old-school it's practically taboo in the current Republican party! :)

Good brave statement, bravo sir.

Went to UCLA. Good kid. Don't agree that he is somehow courageous for speaking up. He has an opinion, is willing to voice it, take it or leave it.

I disagree because the prevailing attitude in a pro locker room is opposite of him and I can almost guarantee he will get pushback, if not from his own teammates then other players around the league.
03:53 PM on 03/10/2011
Have you been in a pro locker room? How do you know what the prevailing attitude is? From the movies? I have and it's not all that you may think it is. A lot of the guys are better educated and more articulate than the posters here on HP. Just because they don't talk openly about something - doesn't mean they are against it. They are doing their job. Do you stand around your place of work and yap about this stuff?

Yeah son! Bmore pride! Hopefully Annapolis will pass this gay marriage act today. I don't know if you all have been following this but the National Organization for Marriage (a national conservative group) has pledged a million dollars to in an effort to derail this legislation. It just shows that conservatives groups only favor state's rights when it follows their ideology.
