Christian-Muslim Clashes In Cairo Kill 13

Egypt Christians

By HAMZA HENDAWI   03/ 9/11 08:56 AM ET   AP

CAIRO -- Clashes that broke out when a Muslim mob attacked thousands of Christians protesting against the burning of a Cairo church killed at least 13 people and wounded about 140, security and hospital officials said Wednesday.

The Muslims torched the church amid an escalation of tensions between the two religious groups over a love affair between a Muslim and a Christian that set off a violent feud between the couple's families.

The officials said all 13 fatalities died of gunshot wounds.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The late Tuesday night clashes added to a sense of ongoing chaos in Egypt after the momentous 18-day democracy uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11. The uprising left a security vacuum when police have pulled out from Cairo and several other cities three days into the uprising.

The police have yet to fully take back the streets, something that has left space for a wave of violent crime and lawlessness in some parts of the nation.

In a separate incident, at least two people were wounded when rival crowds pelted each other with rocks at Cairo's central Tahrir Square, the uprising's epicenter, according to an Associated Press Television News cameraman at the scene. He said the violence pitted youths camping out at the square to press their demand for a complete break with the ousted regime and another group that is opposed to their continued presence at the square.

The Christian protesters on Tuesday blocked a vital highway, burning tires and pelting cars with rocks. An angry crowd of Muslims set upon the Christians and the two sides fought pitched battles for about four hours.

Mubarak handed power to the military when he stepped down, but the military does not have enough troops to police every street in Cairo, a sprawling city of some 18 million people that, at the best of times, is chaotic.

Even before the uprising unleashed a torrent of discontent, tensions had been growing between Christians and Muslims in this country of 80 million.

On New Year's Day, a suicide bombing outside a Coptic church in the port city of Alexandria killed 21 people, setting off days of protests. Barely a week later, an off-duty policeman boarded a train and shot dead a 71-year-old Christian man and wounding his wife and four others.

Egypt's ruling generals have pledged last week to rebuild the torched church and the country's new prime minister, Essam Sharaf, has met the protesters outside the TV building in downtown Cairo to reassure them that his interim government would not discriminate against them.

But the Christians were not appeased. At least 2,000 of them protested on the highway on Tuesday night and a separate crowd of several hundred has been camping out outside the TV building for days to voice their anger at what they perceive to be official discrimination against them.

Come on guys! You were getting along so well during the protests! Saw pictures of Christians protecting Muslims during prayers and Muslims protecting Christians during mass. That was so cute!

Just put aside your differences...There really aren't that many.

As information the Coptic Christian Church is the oldest Christian Church organization in the world predating the Roman Catholics. It therefore has a long history of its own and may or may not be similar to other Christian groups on a number of points.

There is a long history of problems between the Muslim majority in Egypt and the Christian minority. That includes various discriminations and even murder. This is not a pretty picture.

This event sounds like a Romeo and Juliet affair leading to some unwarranted religious inferences.

If "Infidel is as Infidel does" is a true statement, there are far, far more Infidels than there are non-Infidels in most of the "Muslim, Christian, Atheist and Jewish communities", according to my Scripturally educated sense of right and wrong.

Some thoughts by a thinking American---- Remember in the beginning it was said and every one scoffed The Obama Administration is going to be put to the test. Six months ago the average person would have had to do a little searching to find Tripoli, and Cairo on the map. Now all are experts. Mubarak was literally unknown by the DUUHS, The UK releases the terrorist in the Lockerbie bombing, he didn't have long to live. The terrorist reaches home they are dancing in delight, he is still alive today. The uprising in Egypt is by the population supposedly, do you see the arms that have some of those weapons are high caliber. Where did they get them from most certainly they are not equal to the Smiths down the block. ave the DUUHS looked at a world map lately all the turmoil is border to border of mid eastern countries are they trying to build an expanded islamiic nation? Just thinking are you Mr Obama

Religion can also be its balm.

People who do harm to others use all kinds of excuses to justify it, including religion.  But their real motives are always variations of these:  greed, jealousy, and power.

First of all, I feel sad for the died and wounded innocent people. But the truth is far beyond what the event or the words can tell. It is easy understood as it is complicated.
reasons for the clash happened would fall into all of the following:
-first and the main effective reason; a counter revolution supported by old regime and those who have benefits with old regime.
-second would be a root cause; Muslims as well as Christians in Egypt will need to show more tolerance in regard with some issues; including religion transition, and handling criminal activities may be committed by one of either group to the other. we all need to listen actively to each other and having a better communication skills enable us to achieve social agreement in better new promising community.
They fight us, they fight us, against us both Muslims as well as Christians, they want to cause the maximum harm against us, we will not yield and we will get over, God Save Egypt and God will help us both Muslims as Christians.
