Doug Hampton: John Ensign Should Resign Immediately

Doug Hampton John Ensign

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada man whose wife had a monthslong affair with Sen. John Ensign said in a rare statement Wednesday that the Republican should immediately resign to shield the family from an ongoing ethics investigation stemming from the extramarital relationship.

Doug Hampton, Ensign's former co-chief of staff, said Ensign's "callousness and lack of remorse" has prolonged the anguish caused by the 2008 affair.

Ensign announced on Monday that he wouldn't pursue a third term to protect his wife and children from "exceptionally ugly" campaign attacks. The Senate Ethics Committee is investigating whether Ensign tried to hide the affair by securing Hampton a lobbying job.

Hampton said he, his wife and others close to them are being forced to cooperate with the investigation, a process that continues to reopen old wounds.

"His selfish, steadfast refusal to resign immediately prolongs the pain and anguish he caused," Hampton said. "It also requires us to continue to cooperate with the Senate Ethics investigation, including disrupting our lives by requiring myself, Cindy and others close to us to return to Washington D.C. to be deposed."

Hampton dismissed the ethical questions driving the investigation. Ensign's parents provided the Hampton family with $96,000 described as a gift and federal criminal law prohibits congressional aides from lobbying their ex-bosses or office colleagues for one year after departing their Hill jobs.

"The cost to the taxpayers of this fruitless exercise flies in the face of John's claim of being fiscally conservative and a protector of the taxpayer's money, much like his affair with my wife flew in the face of his claim to moral righteousness," Hampton said.

Daniel Albregts, a Las Vegas lawyer representing the Hamptons, told The Associated Press that Doug and Cindy Hampton have both been subpoenaed and could return to Washington soon.

"It's imminent," he said.

Albregts declined to name the others who have been questioned or discuss investigators' questions.

The Justice Department and the Federal Election Commission also investigated the scandal, then dropped the cases with little explanation. The Senate ethics panel, however, recently named a special counsel to look into the matter.

Ensign's spokeswoman did not immediately return a request for comment.

Albregts said the Hamptons recently relocated to California to start a new life together, but Ensign's continued presence in Washington – a constant reminder of the affair – has prolonged their healing process.

"They lost everything," Albregts said. "They are trying to rebuild their lives."

Ensign acknowledged the relationship with Cindy Hampton in June 2009. The Ensigns and the Hamptons had been close friends and Cindy Hampton also worked for Ensign in Washington.

The affair and the legal problems that followed ended talk that Ensign might make a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 and forced him to resign his position as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee.

Through it all, Ensign insisted he would seek re-election until his announcement on Monday, when he reiterated that he had not violated any laws or ethics rules. He also said the investigation did not influence his decision to retire from politics after 2012.

"If I was concerned about that I would have resigned, because that would make the most sense because then it goes away," Ensign said.

"They lost everything," Albregts said. "They are trying to rebuild their lives."

Why, did they have to give the $96,000 back?

Your wife commands a very high price, go with it Bra.

And Hampton took $96,000 from Ensign's parents as payoff money. What a lovely bunch of people they are.

Actually, why not have Ensign run for president? Or do they know that it would guarantee Obama's second term?

Hampton should be more understanding. Ensign' love of country and total commitment to work shows the sort of commitment we need in America. Perhaps Newt could explain this to Mr. Hampton.

If he were a Dem...the Repubs would be screaming for his resignation. Heck they would already have forced him out. Always a double standard with the Repubs.

Last nigth I was watching the rerun of Bill Maher's Real Time. The end of the New Rules segment is a must watch.

He compared the infidelity antics and the responses/actions/shame:

Newt (cheated on cancer stricken wife)=thinks he can be president. Runs around on tv/radio stations hawking his book.
John Edwards (cheated on cancer stricken wife)=Worst Person in the world.

Spizer (paid for a hooker) = resigned from his governor's position
Ensign, Vitter (paid for hookers -in Ensign's case not a "pro" hooker)=Both still in the Senate.

How about Roy Ashurn (R-CA) arrested (DUI) after leaving gay nightclub with unidentified man.

How about Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY), DUI arrest leads to revelation that he had both an affair and a child with another woman.

How about State Rep Bob Allen of FL (co-chair of McCain's 08 FL campaign) arrested for offering an undercover cop $20 for the privilege of performing oral sex on him (2007).

Also in 2007, Glenn Murphy Jr. (Pres. of Young Rep. Nat'l Federation) who also advised the use of gay marriage as a wedge issue, accused of trying to perform sex on a sleeping 22 year old man. Same thing happened in 1998.

2006 Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL, a fierce opponent of child porn, resigned after it surfaced that he has sent illicit emails to teenage pages.

2007 Randall Tobias, Bush's Global AIDs Coordinator, who spoke out against prostitution (and condom use), resigned from the State Dept. after he is linked to an escort service.

How about Ted Haggard in 2006?

Gov Jim Gibbons (R-NV in 2006), accused of assaulting a woman in a parking garage by throwing her against the wall and threatening to rape her. She dropped criminal charges, citing intimidation by his campaign; but does file a civil suit. In 2009, Gibbons asks judge to seal his phone records from her lawyers probably due to his ongoing divorce in which he is accused of more affairs.

I have many more, but space won't permit.

Then there is Craig, also finished out his term.

I heard the interruption by the airport police kept him from finishing his term.

That's pushing it a bit... $96,000 to relocate and then a new job guaranteed! Unlike Ensign who might have broken the law, Cindy Hampton may not have done anything illegal, but surely cheating on her husband was her responsibility and nobody else's.

No!! That's not what I meant: as far as the the Hamptons go, she is responsible for cheating on her husband and betraying her friend. Of course, Ensign is responsible for cheating on his wife and betraying his employee, and probably also of breaking the law.

Ensign "reiterated that he had not violated any laws or ethics rules." If the Senate doesn't forbid this behavior, certainly there are higher sources that do.

May I have the audacity to invite the Honorable Leader of the Senate to draw his attention to the news caption of Huffingtonpost' Doug Hampton: John Ensign Should Resign Immediately" this is what happened when he John Ensgin of GOP tried to shift the brothel to his house. For your kind information not only he many GOP top ranking leaders tried, trying and many would be try to make their desire and satisfaction see the daylight in future too.

But until now all went in vain and they all ended up on the street as far as their beloved family home were concerned.

My earnest request is please do something to arrest these shameful filthy trend among the congressional representatives and Senators or else one day they will be insulted by refusing their entry to foreign countries.

As Israel has already set the example of insulting a lawmakers delegation for no fault of theirs.

Hope this instance and many more of previous occasion will act as eye opener and reminder for strict legislation of law to curb this filthy habit of the lawmakers in general with emphasis on GOP to avert severe criticisms of the country and insulting innocent citizens just because they are their leaders. the Prime Minister of Italy is a glaring example for US and its would be its future fate because GOP's concerned lawmakers undesirable filthy sex inclination even after being married like Belunsconi .

Accepting "hush money" is also moral, right? Or was it worse...like extortion? Both sides of the mess stink.
