Finicky fire alarms, try no fire alarms. Anything on the window sill (inside) would be frozen by morning. From dorm to classrooms was 4 miles with no transportation. Twenty below zero was common in winter, started snowing in October and stopped snowing in May, except for an occasional flurry. It made the late 60s early 70s unforgettable.

Watterson Towers at Illinois State. 28 stories high, housing nearly 2200 students...only 6 elevators (when they are all working--which is a rarity) that stop at every 5th floor. Air conditioning rarely worked and the trash chute frequently had a fire in the basement that smoked up the rest of the building.

When I was there we called Watterson Towers the Cabrini Green of campus housing...

I've spent a lot of time in Forbes at UIUC and can unequivocally tell you that the dorms at Northern Illinois University - specifically Grant Hall - are so much worse. I lived in Grant for a year. My dorm was so small that my roommate's bed and my bed, both Twins, would nearly touch each other when placed lengthwise against either wall.

How was Tutwiler from University of Alabama not on the list? Roaches, moldy A/C, bathrooms shared between 30 girls, right next to train tracks...AND to top it all off, a beautiful view of a cemetery outside of the window.

Hey now at least those in the cemetary don't have loud parties!

You know it's bad when the de-louse you when LEAVING the dorm. Reed Hall at the University of Georgia was a great location, but the livestock sucked. They had rats at that dorm which was adjacent to the Sanford Stadium. The good news is I never saw a rat inside of Reed, but plenty outside. My time at UGA was 1983-1985 for full disclosure.

The comments about Payne are completely inaccurate. For shame.

Good thing the cost of living off campus at VT in Blacksburg is the close to the price of living in a dorm!

Many years ago, I spent a decade (well, 2 years but it seemed like a decade) at a Columbia University graduate dorm with a twitchy fire alarm system that went off an average of 3x per week, --EVERY week-- and always at night. Repeatedly awakened and forced into the Harlem night at 3AM, I think, officially qualifies as the worst dorm in America.

Michigan Tech's Wadsworth looks so disturbing, I hope I never have to live there. It has horrible architecture and looks like something from the tenements of New York!

I go to the University of Illinois and before I clicked this link I thought surely the U of I's six pack has to be on this list (and if it's not something is terribly wrong).

Garner Hall is part of the Six Pack - six dorms built decades ago that are just completely falling apart now.

Isn't Weston part of the six pack as well? Those dorms did suck. I lived in Taft, and it was pretty bad too.

I don't think these are the worst dorms in US. In my memories, My dorm had 3 brats living in. The guys usually had parties with our neighbour dorms. So we had a good time there.
The most unforgetable thing is my roommates ran wildly out of the dorm and fell down on the floor, simply because he got a second Prize in a Colleage baseball Game sponsored by WelcomeGet. And He won 1000 bucks too. He was too excited.

The honors dorms at USC should be included.

Whoever was quoted on Payne Hall at Virginia Tech obviously did not live in that dorm, because he/she is incredibly inaccurate. So fear not, future Payne people. As a former resident, I can tell you that:

It is RIGHT BETWEEN two major dining halls
It is RIGHT BEHIND one of Tech's gyms
It has nice suite set-ups, complete with working AC and definitely consistent hot water

Unimpressed, HuffPo. Find better sources.
