Terror Hearing In Congress Begins Amid Heightened Security

Peter King Hearings

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/10/11 09:39 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:35 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- Extra security will accompany a New York congressman as he chairs a hearing focused on the U.S. Muslim community and its willingness to help prevent radical Islamic terrorism.

Rep. Peter King told The Associated Press that he has had a larger security details for the past few months because of an overseas threat relayed in December. Since then, round-the-clock security has been provided by the New York Police Department and the Nassau County, N.Y., police.

On Thursday, however, at King's request, the Capitol Police will be securing the congressional hearing room and surrounding areas, as well as his office, as the House Homeland Security Committee takes testimony.

Rarely does a congressional hearing attract as much advance controversy. In protests ahead of the session, critics have condemned the hearing as anti-Muslim and have likened it to the McCarthy-era hearings investigating communism.

"I am well aware that the announcement of these hearings has generated considerable controversy and opposition," King says in prepared opening remarks obtained by the AP. "Congressional investigation of Muslim American radicalization is the logical response to the repeated and urgent warnings which the Obama administration has been making in recent months."

The witnesses include family members of young men who were inspired by others to go into terrorism, with deadly consequences. They plan to tell Congress that the young men were brainwashed by radical elements in the Muslim community.

The hearing has reignited a national debate over how to combat a spate of homegrown terrorism. The Obama administration has tried to frame the discussion around radicalization in general, without singling out Muslims. King has said that's just political correctness since al-Qaida is the main threat to the U.S.

Despite the protests, there's nothing in the prepared testimony that indiscriminately labels Muslims as terrorists, as critics had feared.

Melvin Bledsoe, whose son, Carlos, is charged with killing an Army private at a recruiting station in Little Rock, Ark., is scheduled to testify about his son's conversion to Islam and his isolation from his family.

"Carlos was captured by people best described as hunters," Bledsoe says in his prepared remarks obtained by the AP. "He was manipulated and lied to."

Elsewhere at the Capitol, National Intelligence Director James Clapper was scheduled to address the threat of homegrown terrorism. In his prepared remarks, Clapper said 2010 saw more plots involving homegrown Sunni extremists - those ideologically aligned with al-Qaida - than in the previous year.

"Key to this trend has been the development of a U.S.-specific narrative that motivates individuals to violence," Clapper said.

When otherwise decent people succumb to fear they are likely to embrace ideas that would have seemed not just foreign but un-American years prior. There is a line that once crossed can't be undone. That line is blaming any large group of people for the actions of the few. Whatever logical games one needs to play to convince themselves that "ignoring the religioius nature ... is... politically correct" are only self serving and not truth serving. Hitler used the same excuse to prove the need for his own homeland security when Herschel Grynszpan attacked and shot German diplomat Ernst vom Rath in the Nazi-German embassy in Paris. This act of terrorism was instrumental in the German people's acceptance of the need to embrace Gleichschaltung.

I think all religion is foolish, but flyingspaghettimonster dammit, folks have a right to their silly beliefs. What you don't have a right to do is to demonize the barrel for the few bad apples unless you're willing to turn that bitterness towards the Catholics for being Irish terrorists and pederasts and the evangelicals for murdering doctors and terrorizing the women of this country. In that new conservative mindset, your demonizing Islam for the actions of a few IS the politically correct thought. You're not being smart and above politically correct thought, you are embracing it.

standard neocon playbook. rhambo said let no "GOOD CRISIS" go to waste.

if they don't have one they make one up.

just like wall street "financial engineering" and "financial innovation" where all of the country's wealth magically appears in the offshore tax free accounts of the wealthy neocon elite.

think of it as crisis DERIVATIVES

king "innovates" and "engineers" Derivatives just like wall street and hollywood where the thought of something replaces the real thing

Kissinger urges Obama: Grant clemency to Jonathan Pollard

Netanyahu in January made first Israeli appeal for Pollard's release.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday, urging him to commute the prison term of Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life term for spying ON AMERICA for Israel.

netanyahu's demand for more US BILLIONS ON TOP of the BILLIONS we already GIVE them every year

"Barak also told the newspaper that Israel might seek an additional $20 billion in U.S. military aid to help it deal with potential threats arising from the turmoil in the Arab world."

peter king is a text book example of why term limits are needed. he has outlived his use in congress and to further this thought, he's a good examply why not to give anymore pension plans.
time to really clean house. get rid of these fossils and their political thinking. it's doing no good for america.

I just loved his response to the charge of being a hyprocrite after his close and very friendly assocations with the IRA were brought to light. Apparently it's okay to be a friend of terrorists and give them aid - just so long as they're killing and maiming other people's children and have never targeted the US.

And Palin tried to paint Obama as palling around with terrorist in the 2008 election based on the fact that Obama taught classes at he same university, served on a board with Ayers which was funded by a rich republican couple who were friends of the Reagans, and lived in the neighborhood, dispite the fact that Ayers was accused of terrorist activties when Obama was 4 years old and allowed to rehabilitate himself back into mainstream society.

While King can Pal around with terrorist as recent as 15 years ago and serve in the US Congress unrepentant of his support for Irish terrorists. What does King see as the difference between small minority of muslims in this country who would support their cause in their homeland and his support for his Irish brethren. Hypocrite GOPs, all of them..

Good move Peter. I have even a better suggestion. Why not bring back the house Un-American Activities committee. You remember that diddy? I even have the perfect person to chair it...
Michele Bachman. We can even dig up Senator McCarthy's corpse and make him an honorary committee member...

Peter King should be taken of the Homeland Security Committee, the amazing thing if this was a Democrat the Republicans would be having a Seizure, wanting them to be fired, but what they do it's Ok, you have Vitter who should not be in Washington, Ensign shouldn't be in Washington and Darrell Issa shouldn't be in Washington, we have Rick Scott who should not be Governor and we have Karl Rove leading the Republicans Party shouldn't be in Washington, now all these Criminals sitting in Washington, this just tell how corrupt the Tea Baggers are they support all this corruption, they are Hypocrites.

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. -- James Madison

This is the Republican methods of keeping the voters from voting on issues of their own best interest, such as economy. They will also be using their old staples of "God, Guns & Gays" to acheive the same effect......vote wedge issues not real issues.
