Walmart Plans To Open 40 Scaled-Down Express Stores This Year

Walmart Express

The new Walmart: smaller and with significantly less parking.

Walmart is set to begin construction on a scaled-down version of the iconic retail store next week, according to building permits obtained by Bloomberg News.

The experimental "Express" store, which is the first of its kind in the U.S., will be less than one-tenth the size of the average Wal-Mart and located in Gentry, Arkansas, a small town just twenty miles away from Walmart headquarters, Bloomberg notes.

Express stores are only the most recent development for the quickly-changing retail giant. Within the last six months, Walmart, the world's largest corporation, has also promoted itself as a local food advocate, created a free pick-up service, and attempted to backtrack on its anti-union reputation.

The proposed store will be 14,400 square feet and will hold 75 parking spaces, significantly smaller than the average Walmart, which checks in at 185,000 square feet and 800 parking spaces. The company plans to open around 40 similar stores this year, with the first one scheduled to open in May.

The corporate makeover comes at a time when the company's financial health has been called into increasing question. Revenue at established stores has now declined for seven consecutive quarters, and Target, who recently won multiple price comparisons, has emerged as a significant competitor.

What do you think? Would this new, smaller Walmart work for you?

Quick Poll

Would you shop at a Walmart "Express"

Yes, a good bargain is a good bargain.

No. I'm not a fan of big-box retailers.

Only if I could find nearby parking.

I quit Wal mart when they announced my 87000 sq ft store would turn into a 150,000 monster. After 15 years they are going back to smaller...lol. Larger is proving not to be better and we all need to embrace "less is more" philosophy. I enjoy shopping smaller stores that I don't need to walk a mile just to get to the front door. I love Dollar General...small and has good prices and they are everywhere...they know what works and Wal mart is feeling the pinch in their bottom line. Walmart needs to tear down their super stores and move back into the old real estate they abandoned....many are empty or flea markets that blight communities.

Walmart needs to make an effort to buy locally produced goods.

We need local jobs producing local products. Walmart can help
by buying American made goods for its stores. Without jobs here
in America there are no shoppers for Walmart.

No, Walmart needs to go AWAY. Do not shop there and stay out of the mini version because they will be selling all that contaminated stuff from Japan and China. They are in a decline and that is the reason for the mini W marts. The boycotts are working!!!!!! The lawsuit is really helping too. Support the local stores that spend in your neighborhoods to bring your home value back. W mart does not spend in your neighborhood. The big wigs at W mart add it to their piles of gold and hoard it. http://bigboxboycottblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/welcome-to-big-box-boycott-blog.html

Please make wise decisions for future generations.

YES!

I like Walmart/Target's prices... but they keep getting bigger and bigger. Seriously... Produce? Never.

Before you know it, there are hundreds of cars in the parking lot and it takes over a half hour to cash out. Every aisle is filled with people sneezing on you and/or smelling like a garbage can.

Smaller Walmarts would be perfect for people like me who just want one or two things. Get in and out without making it an hour long ordeal.

Do you know what a nonemployer business is?

I will not shop there as long as Walmart  =  Made outside the USA
04:47 PM on 03/22/2011
Then you are not able to shop anywhere.

i hope no one goes to the walmarts and they close down. walmart is stealing from small businesses and contributes to the problem of outsourced labor.

shut them down, or take them over and change the name. reclaim local business.

Try shopping at the small M&P's in NYC if you want to see stealing.

We subsidize the low prices paid for their junk by paying for foodstamps, fuel assistance and medicare for their employees who are poor enough to qualify for all sorts of aid even after working. Your tax dollars at work, rethink those cheap prices. We are also paying subsidies to companies that outsource jobs, and pay unemployment for those laid off as a result. Then we give the corporations tax breaks afterwards, while we pay sales tax. When will people rediscover their arithmetic?

Will never darken their door. Watch "High price of Low cost". They have almost single-handedly ruined many small towns in this country...driving out Mom and Pops, so there is now no place else to work, no place else to shop.

No, I don't like Walmart and go there only when I must.
08:38 AM on 03/13/2011
there is never a good reason to go to walmart. you can find it somewhere else.
08:46 AM on 03/30/2011
I think that the MUST word has to go. You can find it elsewhere. It can be done. Tell your local store about the W mart price and see if they will do it just to get their customers back.

Do people really not understand the connection between 30 years of stagnant wages, cheap overseas labor and the introduction of these cheap stores, selling cheap products and paying cheap wages.

You think America would have survived the last 30 years with stagnant wages if there wasn't a plan.

Analytical thinking is dead.

Exactly. Fanned and faved for the reminder (I never forget), because, there are way too many people, some of them on this post, whose memories are only from the day they came into existence. They ignore history, nay, ESCHEW IT. They neither care nor do they believe it repeats itself. They can't even imagine there wasn't always a Walmart.
