One of the guys on NBC's new show, "The Next Great American Restaurant" has the novel idea of opening a chicken and waffles joint. Seriously.

Once IHOP gets around to doing it, you know it's over.

We've been enjoying Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles in L.A. since 1975. From what I heard, the guy who started Roscoes came out of Harlem. And the fact that Roscoes is open til 4AM on weekends never hurt.

It would be really nice if IHOP paid tribute to the originator of the Chick 'n Waffle dish. It was Joseph P. Wells, the owner of Wells Restaurant in Harlem. In 1938, Mr. Wells wanted to attract customers to his Harlem restaurant at 2247 Seventh Ave. and created the dish - a combo of breakfast and dinner. When there were no takers, he decided to give it away for free. Word-of-mouth spread about the free eats and his restaurant thrived with his specialty - the Harlem Delicacy, Chicken 'n Waffles.

Everyone know you have to serve the waffles with chicken that is fried on the bone. And how does white meat even make sense in this dish? I'm not even American and I know this. (Sigh).

Don't go with Samuel L. Jackson, especially in the trunk of the car!

I tried this the other day. Thank goodness I had a coupon. It was not that tasty. Kelloggs frozen waffles taste better and the chicken strips were fried bland.

Okay, I tried this dish at the IHOP in Starke, Florida Friday morning. It's fifty percent of what it should be. The chicken tenders are pretty tasteless. Thet need to use chicken on the bone with plenty of pepper in the coating. The waffles are also tasteless, and they were served cold.

Years ago I had a similar dish at the Carter House restaurant in Waycross, Georgia. It was delicious! The balance of salty, fried chicken and sweet waffles and syrup make for a taste treat, but it has to be done correctly.

I hear that real chicken and waffles can be had in Memphis.

I'll pass, thanks. If IHOP's waffles are anything like their pancakes, they have less taste than the paper napkin they're served with.

I don't think it will be any better than Gladys Knight & Ron Winans Chicken & Waffles. OMG, when I lived in Atlanta, GA after a late night it is the best thing!

I miss living in Atlanta. If there was a place in the world, where I could get the best of all kinds of dining choices, I would be in heaven. South Florida has great Cuban and West Indian food but Southern food or African cuisine is hard to find. And neither had great N'orleans cuisine.

The last couple of times I ate at IHOP, I waited an extremely long time to get a plate of piping cold food. I'll stick with Roscoe's.

I dined at IHOP about 6mos ago, before that maybe 15 years since, to say the least it was not clean, so unless everything else is closed, I won't be going back anytime soon.

Not kidding, Chicken and maple syrup does nothing for me, and I love odd food combos. Try banana ice cream flambed with bourbon and bacon some time. Now that is good.

I think "chicken tenders" means battered and fried chicken paste. I like chicken with bones in it. :)

Nah, that's chicken nuggets. Chicken tenders are strips of actual chicken breast meat.

In this case it means the nuggets are not cut up before frying.
