Japan Earthquake MAP: Epicenter, Most Impacted Areas From Massive Quake

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/11/11 11:11 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

The massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan today, March 11, 2011, triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean. One of the biggest earthquakes recorded in history, it was followed by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them with a magnitude greater than 6.0.

Shocking raw video footage has emerged from Japan and the Pacific Ocean. But what areas were most impacted by the quake? The epicenter of the earthquake was near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, 231 miles northeast of Tokyo. (See maps from USGS below.)

Also, be sure to see the numerous Japan earthquake resources launched today by Google, including a People Finder.

Why can't I trust what the Japanese have to say about most things? Whaling, earthquakes, killing dolphins, nuclear accidents, etc??? Because they don't play straight with anyone....just like here....renditions and torture, war for profit, oil spills, corporate malfeasance, etc...

I can't help it - substitute the word Republican for Japanese and that works too.

The Stupidity of Man, - defying both History and Nature. We build tall buildings despite what we read about the Tower of Babel. We have massive building in flood zones, earthquake zones, mudslide zones, volcanoes and forest fires because we refuse to learn the same lessons over and over again. Why do we let the RICH build these Get Rich Quick Developments in all of these wrong places ?

Actually, it is generally the poor who live in marginal situations, not the rich in modern buildings above the flooding tide of the poor.

When the Japanese authorities made a 10km and 3km evacuation from the Fushima nuclear plants 1 and 2 repectively, I knew it was going to be bad because they always underestimate for PR reasons; in fact they have been caught hiding the truth in the past about accidents at nuclear facilities. And 10 km around a nuclear plant that just exploded? You must be joking - should be at least 50! Just goes to show that the government is in bed with corporations and willing to do anything to protect the nuclear industry - including radiating half the country.

Can someone tell me how to interpret the third map? The one that says Seismic hazard of Japan(sic) earthquake. And how how long it went on?

I believe it's a seismic shaking hazard assessment that shows potential seismic shaking.

Earthquake shaking hazards are calculated by projecting earthquake rates based on earthquake history and fault slip rates, the same data used for calculating earthquake probabilities.

The word "impacted" only applies to teeth. (Who writes those headlines?)

Your vocabulary is stunted. There are also other contexts in which "impacted" has other meanings, connotations.

Yes it applies to teeth....
And from Encyclopedia Britannica....."fracture in which one broken end is wedged into the other broken end. fracture, break..."
From dictionary.net "To affect or influence, especially in a significant or undesirable manner..."

Would you look at that number of aftershocks? And they just had a 6.8 about three hours ago.

My deepest condolences to those AFFECTED (Not "impacted", HuffPo, impact is NOT a verb!) by this horrific quake and tsunami. Japan is a wealthy nation and will rebound. Those who arae thinking of donating money for relief should consider donating to the efforts in Haiti instead. Haiti does not have the resources to recover that Japan has.

"impact is NOT a verb!"

That's a losing battle I fight every day.

It is a battle that you are destined to lose.

Because it is a verb...

My deepest condolences for the Japanese people affected by this quake and the tsunami. I hope they are able to recover from this disaster as soon as possible. Knowing the Japanese people and their work ethic, I know that if there are any people who can get their country back to normalcy as soon as possible, it would be them.

How incredibly sad.
Has anyone questioned whether fracking could be an indirect cause?

It is something to explore, but I can't see how you could demonstrate that fracking was an indirect cause of this EQ.

Unlikely. Japan has a history of earthquakes (a hazard of living on volcanic islands).
