Tsunami Advisory Closes Some California Beaches

California Tsunami

JEFF BARNARD   03/11/11 01:21 PM ET   AP

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. — Waves from a tsunami caused surges along California's coast that shook some boats loose from docks, as beach-area residents evacuated to higher ground.

The tide began rising shortly after 7:30 a.m. in Crescent City, near the Oregon border, where the tsunami was expected to hit the hardest in California.

By midmorning, waves crashed against the bluffs, as residents gathered on the overlooks to watch. The California Highway Patrol estimated about 35 boats in the harbor were damaged.

On the central coast in Santa Cruz, loose fishing boats crashed into one another and chunks of wooden docks broke off. The water rushed out as quickly as it poured in, leaving the boats tipped over in mud.

Some surfers ignored evacuation warnings and took advantage of the waves ahead of the tsunami.

Good surf today at Tressels. Happened to be heading up to the area for a deposition, so I slapped my board onto my rack and hit the beach right after.

FoxLA last night produced some of the funniest television I've ever witnessed. I couldn't stop watching. It was like a brilliant comedy skit. They were literally yelling at each other arguing about what the difference between a "warning" and "watch" were. One of the reporters was losing it because she kept getting tweets asking what the difference was. I'm afraid to think what would happen if we actually had a real legit disaster.

Your ' blame game ' post was scrubbed before I could respond. Was gonna suggest that it was your guy skipping rocks across the water during his vakay. The vision of your sitting in a room with snorkel. fins and Schwimmflugel made me chuckle.
All kidding aside though....What is going on ?? This is terrible !! Certanily not on the same plane as Japan, but right now there are raging floods destroying hundreds of homes in Pompton Plains NJ.
My daughter works for a co. in New Zealand, recently returned. The destruction there unbelievable.. She is leaving today at 3:55 pm from Dulles to San Fran. Cannot help but be concerned. My brother was in Haiti... . his horror stories are unbelievable/

Hi from SC as well Richard, I just want to say it's not about big or not big waves it's about the fact that the whole ocean is being moved forward to the shore...so little ones have a whole ocean coming in behind them...that's what happened in the harbor today...

Don't know if the story has since been edited since you posted, but it does mention that Crescent City is near the Oregon border. The only other mention of a beach city is Santa Cruz being in C. California.

Sorry but you don't understand, small or big waves is not the issue here, the issue is when the waves come in a big part of the ocean that was shook up by the earthquake is right behind that wave!

The "tsunami" for the coastal area west of Los Angeles is supposed to be rolling in any time now. It is only forecast to be less than 3 feet high and is not expected to cause any damage.
