In this day and age, in a world of 24/7 connectivity there is also a need for increased productivity, and so it's hardly a surprise that coffee is the world's second-largest commodity. Coffee consumption is pretty universal, crossing both geographic and cultural boundaries. Given that nearly every one of us is either an avid or casual consumer of coffee, it's time to look back at the coffee innovations that made coffee culture what it is today.

The Coffee Shop

Coffee culture started in earnest with the birth of the coffee shop. While historians agree the first one was in Constantinople, in current-day Turkey, they don't agree on which one was the very first. That being said, many people believe the world's first café was called Kiva Han, which reportedly opened in 1475.

Vive le press! It makes the best coffee: pure, unfiltered caffeinated joy.

I enjoy Indonesian coffees like Sumatra, but only in a full city roast. Rich and low in acidity.

And the Coffee break began in Stoughton, Wisconsin. There, Norwegian women who rolled cigars would stop from time-to-time to share coffee during their break. No word on whether they smoked cigars too.

How could they not include the Mr. Coffee which switched millions of Americans from percolators to drip.
08:32 PM on 03/16/2011
Exactly. Mr. Coffee also gave Joe DiMaggio a second career. I even made a few bucks off of the technology, and have a major love of the coffee. NO more Mr. C machine though. Time to move on to Tassimo, french press, and a Braun...

That's not a percolator, it's a "bialetti" the first home espresso maker.

You got me on the bialetti Terry, but I still insist you order some green bean/fresh roasted Peaberry, the stuff simply roasts better due to the mutant round beans. And trust me, I may not have your mechanical expertise with coffee production, but I do have the buds to identify a myriad of coffees, wines, wheeezies, etc. But if you know that much already, you should quit commenting and buy some Peaberry YO!

I am a morning green tea drinker for decades, but those pictures gave me a jones.  I wish i could have a delicious cup of coffee, but just cannot drink coffee early enough in the day anymore.  I will always curse two-o'clock in the morning if i drink coffee after noon.  I am pretty damn slllloooowwww.

Have to take issue with the percolator shown. The best one (and I have a set) was/is the Silex Vacuum Coffee-maker ( http://www.jitterbuzz.com/indcof.html#hostess ). My grandfather made coffee in one for our fishing trips when I was a boy. I never forgot the taste of that coffee. And despite the accomplishments of modern coffee-makers, I still think the Silex makes better coffee, even better than a French Press, if you get the grind right.

The real question that everyone needs to asking is, "Why am I making a negative comment while I'm drinking poop juice (Folgers/Starbucks/Storebought crap)?
