iPad 2 Sales Stun: 1 MILLION Sold This Weekend, Analyst Says

Ipad 2 Sales

(Reuters) - Analysts expect Apple Inc to have sold close to a million iPad 2 tablet computers on its debut weekend -- significantly more than the first iPad, which went on sale last April.

"We would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad2s in the opening weekend," said Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland.

Best Buy on Friday said some of its outlets ran out of the tablet and its accessories within 10 minutes.

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry estimates Apple may have sold three times more iPad 2 in the first two days compared to the previous version.

Most analysts had projected sales of 350,000 to 400,000 iPads in its debut weekend.

The profile of iPad 2 buyer is -- 60 percent existing iPad owners, about 40 percent first time iPad buyers, 100 percent own at-least One Apple Product, Chowdhry wrote.

People prefer AT&T's iPad 2 over Verizon's because AT&T has better customer service, Chowdhry added.

I dint understand the point of a friggin tablet if it doesn't have a physical keyboard. What if you want to take notes in class? What if you want to type up a quick email? To me, tablets are worthless.

I didn't have an iPad1, but from all reports, and from playing with one briefly in the Apple Store, typing on the virtual keyboard is easy.

Now, I don't know if it makes if a difference if one is a touch typist or not. I touch type, and was able to do so easily on the virtual keyboard. Maybe that's a difference?

Well, I have a friend in class who has one and he hardly uses it to take notes. Meanwhile, all the people with laptops or netbooks are typing away. Judging from my experience with an iPod touch (gifted to me by my sister), the typing feature with the virtual keyboard makes for very slow typing with lots of typos. I can't imagine using a virtual keyboard to take accurate notes in class. Btw, I'm a touch typist, too. I dunno. I like hard buttons I guess.

That was my issue, and then I met people who use it regularly for notes in meetings, and have no problem e-mailing away, either.

As an old geezer, I take notes with a pen or pencil. I don't have an iPad and don't have any intentions of getting one, but it's clearly a better device that I had previously assumed. All the people I've spoken to who have one happen to have the original version. I have no valid comment to make on the new one.

True. Maybe there's a learning curve. Or maybe there are just people who will always like hard buttons...esp if they have long nails lol

Haha look at that l0ser. He's so proud of himself, and getting applause, simply for purchasing a product. I hope this day fills the void inside of him that he's obviously trying to fill.

I passed by an Apple store down here in Orange County on Saturday, and there was a long line of customers waiting outside, in the off chance that the store would get a delivery in. Inside the store it was shoulder to shoulder customers. Good to see that someone is making money.

And it's going 3 places: to the high level execs at Apple, to their laborers in China, and to their stockholders.

How about all the employees that work in the Apple stores and stores like Best Buy? And, if you have a 401K plan, you probably have stock in Apple too.

Apple is great at creating this sort of coverage. I mean, iFixit did a teardown of the Smart Cover! A teardown. Of a cover.

it will not sell 1 m., how could anyone buy this with it having such a short shelf life?

How is the iPad 2 shelf life any shorter than any other piece of technology?

hmm.. I purchased a lot of tech. that isn't outdated as quickly; this is a great example of how vain and sanctimonious people get on these comments -- my comment is so pedestrian and a trite common knowledge statement that few could have a problem with or challenge what I posted in anyway..http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-general-discussions/20233-feel-cheated-apple.html but I guess this vanity connection is a selling point of apple it makes sense that I would get such a response with an apple topic

The question, as someone said on another site, is not how many they sold (that would be all of them), but how many they were able to produce in time for the launch.

A number of Apple Stores are opening an hour early tomorrow, expecting a new shipment; but no one is sure.

When it is all said and done, after a week of sales, I would say that it will be well over 1M. Basically, they sold every iPad2 they had -- at Apple Stores, at Verizon, at ATT, at Wal-Mart, at Best Buy, at Target, and on-line.

no you are wrong, in the context of the article it will not make this 1 m. stated goals (as the post says - maybe you didn't even read the post?), it sounds as if you have multiple receipts in your space that you are trying to rationalize your gullibility, eventually it will sell this much - but as the post says it is a hyped number

If I could afford an iPad 1 or 2 I would certainly buy it! The portability would be great and I wouldn't have to lug my MacBook Pro around all the time. It's expensive and I would hate for something else to happen to it, I have dropped it a couple of times.

This is demographic the iPad targets; people who own MacBooks or other laptops who don't want to lug around their precious equipment 24/7.

yeah, i live and work in latin america and am looking for a way to NOT lug my macbook pro around. there's just too much stuff to lose on long bus/plane rides. and you don't need a contract where i am to use data with the ipad (for the iphone, yes, for some reason).

Whether you love or hate Apple you have to admire their ability to start trends in the tech industry and how they manage to stay on top even after years of serious competition.

Those customers who purchased AT&T service with their iPad are not so happy today after AT&T announced they are imposing broadband data caps and charging extra for, I think it's 50GB. Perhaps those who choose AT&T can switch to verizon since it's only been a couple of days.

A lot of people stream online games and movies from Netflix and don't forget about RPGs! This can quickly add up to hundreds of gbs maybe even a terabyte a month for some people.
09:22 PM on 03/14/2011
You need a bandwidth meter.

I watch 3 hours of Netflix a day streamed to my TV. I use about 100gb a month.
06:57 AM on 03/15/2011
You know that's for DSL service right? It doesn't affect people who don't have AT&T DSL, that include anybody who bought an iPad with 3G service (which is capped much lower, but get the facts straight at least).
