Grace Coddington Once Quit Vogue Because Anna Wintour Was Too Into 'Sexy'

Posted: Updated:

We've finally had a moment to read Julie Kavanagh's article from Intelligent Life magazine on Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington and the piece is rife with did-you-knows.

For example, did you know that Grace quit her job at the glossy in 1986, once Anna Wintour became editor-in-chief? Coddington remarked, "Anna was much more into 'sexy' than I was." But their split didn't last long -- after a stint at Calvin Klein, Coddington was back at Vogue by 1988, because she missed the buzz of a publication.

More Grace factoids:

  • At one point in 1976 she "transform[ed] herself into a business-suited, short-haired blonde--what she calls a 'Calvin person,'" Kavanagh writes. Pictures or it didn't happen!
  • She's seemingly not into all of the attention, saying, "Karl [Lagerfeld] plays the celebrity game. I always make this mistake and think it must be really unpleasant for him, but he actually enjoys it--it's very rock 'n' roll."
