HTC ThunderBolt Release Date: 4G Phone Comes This Week

Htc Thunderbolt Release Date

NEW YORK — Verizon Wireless says it will start selling its first phone capable of using its new, faster "4G" data network.

The ThunderBolt from HTC Corp. will go on sale Thursday for $250 with a two-year contract. It has a large, 4.3-inch touch screen and runs Google Inc.'s Android software.

Initially, Verizon will be selling it with an unlimited 4G data plan, but spokeswoman Brenda Raney says this option will probably go away later this year, along with the rest of Verizon's unlimited data plans.

Verizon launched its 4G network in December, based on a technology known as Long-Term Evolution, or LTE. But only laptop cards have been available for it. Verizon says customers can expect download speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second, nearly ten times faster than 3G speeds.

Verizon's 4G network has limited coverage and doesn't carry phone calls, so the phone uses the 3G network as well.

Verizon has said it plans to sell 10 devices for the 4G network by this summer, including phones and tablet computers. Xoom tablets from Motorola Mobility Inc. are already on sale with 3G modems, but it will be possible to upgrade them with 4G modems later this year.

Sprint Nextel Corp. launched its first 4G phone, the HTC Evo 4G, last summer. Its 4G network, run by subsidiary Clearwire Corp., is slower than Verizon's.

T-Mobile USA and AT&T Inc. don't have 4G networks under the common industry definition of the term, but call their 3G networks "4G" where they've been upgraded to higher speeds. They offer speeds similar to Sprint's 4G.

Verizon started to sell the iPhone last month in a 3G version. There's no word on a 4G version.

Feel sorry for Verizon not having unlimited data in the future....Verizon is playing the game well...they will lose customers though

I'm fine with my HTC Desire, unlimited everything for basically $50 a month. I admit to being quite behind on phone technology, cimputers are more my thing and the new ones are so fragile and the battery drains so quickly. Makes me miss my Samsung D500 but being 19 and having such an embarassing phone pretty much forced me to upgrade.

I'll be a Verizon customer when they stop gouging. $10/month for 500 texts? seriously?

Use Google voice or Yahoo and pay nothing for texts.
Works on iPhone and Android.

There are also GSM carriers that allow you to have text only plans in the US. Try out Qwerty.

Do not use google for anything if you can avoid it. Apart from the us govt they are the largest aggregator of personal information in the world. Big brother sam's pretty but equally dangerous little sister.

It's not just the inflated texting price. The mandatory $30/month data plan for smarts stopped me cold. I have proper broadband at home, and free wifi at work, between the two I would be using the phone without need of the data plan around 99%of the time. All right, what if I get a phone that acts as a hotspot, drop the broadband carrier at home, and use my area's 4G Verizon for ALL of my telco needs? $20/month for using the hotspot feature, first 2 Gigs free, then $20/gig for overage. I can afford all these charges, but I would still rather keep the money than shell out an extra 40% over what I'm paying now. They gouge; I won't be their consumer.

Already pre-ordered from wirefly @ $200 to get locked into unlimited 4g. Then I'll buy a better phone when they come out. Excited about the 4g and RAM in this guy though. HTC SENSE is going to make it about an hour and a half on it before I get it rooted and back to stock.

Don't expect 4G to last. Too disruptive to other transmissions and Congress already gearing up to outlaw that particularly technology. Wow, much of the media industry up in arms at what it will do to their own broadcasting.

If only it had a dual core. HTC should never have made Qualcomm their exclusive provider because they are really letting them down right now.

At least HTC does a great job with build quality and leaving the phone open to modification. Congrats on getting the 4g grandfathered. I hate to see what they are going to start charging once the iPhone 5 comes out.

iPhone thinner, sleeker, easier to use and nearly 300,000 apps. BIG difference there.

The iPhone was not part of his question or part of the topic.

And not everyone wants the iPhone. Some people prefer Android because of certain features that it has that the iPhone does not presently have.

Another Android clone that will be tossed to the proverbial heap in 6 months. All these hardware makers are coming up with hack job phones and people buy because it has Android OS. Many of them are buggy filled with bloat and cr@pware preinstalled. No thanks.

Android OS is dominating the market, more than iOS, more than RIM's BB OS, and phones like the TB have specs and capabilities that are obviously better than the iPhone. They're obviously doing something right... and "buggy filled", where on Earth are you getting this idea? The TB is the current top-of-the-line phone on Verizon and another fantastic device from HTC. Sounds like sour grapes from an iPhone user who made their purchase on a premise they're buying "the best".

Only because it is saturated and done the same way MS did with Windows. Doesn't mean it is any good and their are already virus, trojans and worms hitting the Android market. Once that takes hold you'll be a screaming mimi.

Interesting. So many in this section complain that not all manufacturers are covered.

Then when there is an article about, perhaps, the most significant new phone in Verizon's arsenal............only16 comments.

I must be the only person on this planet who doesn't like the custom UI on HTC phones.

To each their own I guess. HTC has come a long way since their boring uber cumbersome Windows Mobile phones.

The question is, why? With all the excitement generated by Verizon getting the iPhone how many units are they anticipating they'll sell? It looks like a thinner EVO and it this thing appears to have the success (or lack thereof) of the NexusOne written all over it.

This has sense 2.1, a better processor, more storage STOCK, and more RAM than the EVO. Calling it an LTE Evo isn't correct at all.

Also, supposedly it broke Wirefly's pre-order record. Yeah, Wirefly doesn't sell the iPhone, but it looks like the Thunderbolt will at least not be a flop...

I dig android but I can't seem to get excited about this phone. Its Android.
The grace and power is in the strength of the operating system. I've seen the OS its gonna run. I currently run it on my Android handset. I like it. But the only change here is the handset 2.2 will run on. Its going to look exactly the same as any other handset running 2.2. The apps it'll run will look and deliver the same results I get. The Thunderbolt will be speedy. Much more speedy than my handset. No denying that. It will run on a 4G network, if its available. Also a good thing. But beyond that and beyond its new name, whats new?

It is. I agree a larger screen for reading is always better.
At this point, I'm switching to WP7. But I am looking forward to the android based multimedia devices. Full access to the market, GPS, bluetooth and cameras. Depending on the price, those will make a statement.
