Is Your Cell Phone's Radiation Level Safe?

Cell Phone Radiation

First Posted: 03/15/11 10:32 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

aolnews.com:

More than 200 million people in the U.S. talk on cell phones a total of at least 12 hours a month -- some double or triple that amount.

Almost everyone admits that cell phones emit radiation when they link to the closest tower. What almost no one can agree on is whether that radiation is harmful to those holding their phones to their ears.

Amid this confusion comes a report from health and safety activists that the government's cell phone watchdog -- the Federal Communications Commission -- is putting industry desires before public well-being.

With nuclear power plants poppin' like corn I think the quarter of a watt my cellie radiates isn't my biggest concern.

When you stand in front of the microwave in our office with your headphones on, you can hear the radiation. It's a high speed rattle.

Move away, you don't hear it.

One day in my cubicle, I heard that same rattle. But the microwave isn't even on.

It happened throughout the day. Finally I realised what it was. You could hear it when the guy in the next cubice was talking on his cell phone.

As in all things......... something considered safe today....... may be found to be dangerous in the future.......... but then do you expect to live forever?........ with life comes risks..........

We need more independent studies.........

This just in, repeated periods may lead to cancer.

I see the fear of RF is being spread wide and far. The Kochroaches are using it to stop implementation of the Smart Grid.

There are no creditable studies to show that low levels of RF are causing problems. I'll be keeping my cell phone, cordless phone, wifi, GPS devices, etc.

Bottom line is that if all this stuff was causing problems we would have some creditable studies from independent organizations. Especially from Sweden who have always been on top of this. Old style TVs and Monitors with tubes were the worst and the Swedes always had the strictest standards.
06:10 PM on 03/15/2011
You must be joking. Go and read the biomedical literature on the topic.
You state that "there are no creditable studies to show that low levels of RF are causing problems"...that is one of the most ignorant and misinformed, and misinforming statements I have ever seen. About 2000 articles in the peer reviewed literature describe problems caused by RF radiation. Please educate yourself,it will benefit you, and your readership. They deserve the truth, not your misinformed statements rooted in ignorance.

I am informed and that is why the campaign of fear over Smart Meters that are producing the same "energy" as cordless phones sounds like "death panels".

You people claim the cause fires. Yet you have not reports from any fire departments nor insurance companies that had to pay out claims.

You make claims that the meter will invade you privacy. How?

None of it makes any sense.

Why don't you site some references to you claim of peer reviewed lit. Just make sure it is creditable. Not like your climate change denial bought and paid for stuff. Big oil, big coal and nukers don't want a more energy efficient grid. You people are very transparent.

"...Almost everyone admits that cell phones emit radiation when they link to the closest tower..."

The question is, exactly who would be unwilling to admit that?

NO

Notice that there are no years on these articles. There are no creditable links either.

Enjoy your Koch money.

Yes, it is safe.
06:14 PM on 03/15/2011
Nope, it is not safe. This was shown on animal studies, various species, in vitro studies in the lab, and human studies - including a superb study that came out in December and showed higher risk of developmental disorders in children whose mothers use cell phones during pregnancy. That mirrors what the scientific community has long known (as is published) about the impact on the development of the nervous system in animals.

LOL, discussing fear of radiation from cell phones when there's a real radiation leak elsewhere on the planet that's threatening to poison thousands.
01:54 PM on 03/15/2011
but this has always been an ongoing problem.....

Thanks for the link. It was some food for thought. This is what I got out of it: We don't know whats it doing to our bodies, specifically our brain. All the Volkow picture tells me is that the glycolytic activity peaks during or right after an hour long active cell phone exposure. It means that the brain in the regions closest to the cell phone crave ATP because its being exhausted, or that they're been stimulated. The only way this can happen in non cancerous cells is if they've been starved of oxygen (only possible in case of tumor or if someone's choking you). Can't definitively say if cell phone radiation is harmful at this point.......
05:06 PM on 03/15/2011
Oh, by the way, if it indeed was oxygen starvation, the patient/subject would've distinctly felt uncomfortable or probably fainted. We don't really feel uncomfortable after phone calls, we talk and we talk and we talk on the phone all the time (my folks are scattered all across the planet, I talk almost every single day for quite a bit), but we're still okay. I think cell phone radiation is a non-issue.
12:17 PM on 03/15/2011
I use a headphone, however, this proves that there are risks taken when living in a modern civilization.

A radiation leak from the meltdown of nuclear power plants in Japan demonstrate there risks involved in trying to power the industrialization of their economy.

If cellphone companies put a WARNING label on the device itself, it should provide enough information to the consumer who may or may not choose to use modern technology.

Well I read the whole darned thing and would up with the same question. I should learn never to read a story on HP if the headline ends in a question mark.

The answer is always we don't know.

Move along children, nothing to read here.
11:06 AM on 03/15/2011
There's going to be a major wake up call concerning the effects of radiation regardless of the level.
Just as many scientists say that this cell phone usage is dangerous.
Radiation is not good, and being bombarded by microwaves, the same waves that cook your food, isn't healthy either.
You pay a heavy price to be in contact with the office 24/7 in more ways than one.

The sunlight we bask in here in the US and sing about, melts metals and rocks on Mercury, causes electromagnetic storms in the space around the sun; we don't complain about the sun do we? We've been using cell phones prolifically for what, 15 years now? Thats a long time for radiation sickness of some sort to manifest itself and be unambiguously traced back to cell phones. Here's a good website, http://www.microwavenews.com/ . There's a lot of noise out there about cell phone radiation, but not enough reliable information. As far as safety is concerned, I'm pretty sure its safer than flying, which in turn is safer than driving your car or being in a moving car. Are we going to give up transportation then?
10:49 AM on 03/15/2011
Yes. Ask any physicist. Until then stop spreading unwarranted fear.
11:35 AM on 03/15/2011
Physicist here. The answer is yes. The answer will go in one ear and out the other. More people will die from tripping and falling while using a cell phone than will ever be harmed by the radiation.

Shock value. More clicks more ad revenue. I'm glad I use a blocker.

I stopped using HP on my iPod because the banner ad is so intrusive and takes up so much space.
