East Village's New Extra Place

East Village's Extra Place: Music, Fashion and Tacos

When CBGB was at its prime, Extra Place was the back alley where questionable things went down and music legends made fast getaways. Fast forward to today, and Extra Place, which begins on the corner of 1st Street in the East Village, is still thriving with music, fashion and ... tacos.

The Music -- Extra Place: CBGB closed its doors in October of 2006, and it was a sad day for punks everywhere. But now, in the legendary space that Hilly Kristal built, music lovers can take refuge at Extra Place by Max's Kansas City. These days, the scene's less punk, more rock and indie, and always exclusive, i.e., only private events go down. Once inside (if that ever happens), expect fashions elite and music scenesters coming together on various levels of epic: charity events, Fashion Week after-parties and all-out jam sessions.315 Bowery; no listed phone number

The Fashion -- Montana Knox: Indie artist Montana Knox turns his intricate sketches and drawings into high-quality cotton T-shirts, jewelry and more at his closet-sized store on on Extra Place. The space is also the home of Montanimals, Knox's mother's line of hand-stitched plush bunny rabbits inspired by Montana's childhood sketches -- high on the cute factor and just in time for spring. Montana Knox is only open weekends.4 Extra Place; 212-529-KNOX

The Tacos -- Oaxaca Taco: The light at the end of the alley is a tasty taco crafted by the folks at Oaxaca Taco. This Mexican hideaway is surprisingly subdued for a taqueria, but what it doesn't deliver in fancy decor, it hammers home in taste. Already huge in Brooklyn (Park Slope, Carrol Gardens and Prospect Heights), Extra Place is their first Manhattan location and definitely worth a visit.16 Extra Place; 212-677-3340

Keep your eye on Extra Place alley over the next few months. Plans to continue its upscale transformation are in the works. Tipsters say the sidewalk might just turn into an alfresco cafe come May!
