Monster High Clawdeen Wolf Doll Teaches Girls About Plucking & Shaving (PHOTOS, POLL)

First Posted: 03/17/2011 11:26 am Updated: 05/25/2011 6:40 pm

Parenting experts aren't too pleased with Mattel's "Monster High Clawdeen Wolf" doll, which they claim is teaching children a few problematic lessons about body image.

Clawdeen's bio explains that she's a 15-year-old werewolf, "a fierce fashionista with a confident no-nonsense attitude. I'm also gorgeous, intimidating, and absolutely loyal to my friends."

And her Freaky Flaw? "Freaky Flaw: My hair is worthy of a shampoo commercial and that's just what grows on my legs. Plucking and shaving is definitely a full time job but that's a small price to pay for being scarily fabulous."

The doll is usually picked up by 5-to 7-year-old girls and marketed toward tweens and teens.

Psychologist Dale Atkins told "The Today Show," "When we have these ridiculous models -- sexualized children, and horses with long eyelashes that are flirtatious and all of that -- it sets up this ideal of beauty and body image that kids have to pay attention to because they can't not pay attention to it. And they feel less good as they're trying to develop a good sense about their own bodies."

However, Margaux Vega, a spokeswoman for Mattel told "Today," "Monster High is all about celebrating your imperfections and accepting the imperfections of others. Clawdeen Wolf is the teenage daughter of a werewolf. In the webisodes, she has to shave and wax and pluck between classes. Girls of a certain age know about the embarrassment of unwanted hair in unwanted places."

And Senior Public Relations Manager for Toys R' Us Bob Friedland told FOX411 that Clawdeen is super popular: "We haven't had any complaints from parents, customers who are buying this doll are very happy with the product and we cannot keep the dolls on the shelves."

Take a look at Clawdeen and tell us what you think.

Quick Poll

The Monster High Clawdeen Wolf doll:

HORRIBLE! It's teaching impressionable girls such a terrible message.

HARMLESS! It's just a toy. Jeez.

Unsure.

I feel that this is stupid! First of all I would like to say that the outfit that Clawdeen wolf is whearing is fine! there are leggings that she is whearing, the skirt that she is whearing is short yes but thats the style now, and at least the shirt covers every thing. Not one thing was said when the bratz dolls were made! If you look at there clothing then you will see that what clawdeen is wearing is fine. What do you want her to be in? a long dress that hits the floor covering up her arms and her neck? Oh and what about the gay ken doll!!!??? so what its ok make kids think that being gay is fine and dandy but a WERWOLF LIVING IN A HUMAN WORLD is bad? Oh and the doll is not showing that you half to fitt in if you shave and wax. WHAT PART OF IF SHE GOES TO SCHOOL LOOKING LIKE A WOLF THEY WILL KILL HER DOES KNOW ONE GET!? And so what if she likes to flirt with boys! it does not mean that your daughters will go and follow what a dumb doll does! not to mention that the show was made for older girls!!!! not little girls! And let me get this strate? THERE ARE ACTUAL PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT THE DOLL COULD MAKE A GIRL SEXUALY ACTIVE?? yea right! if that was the case then barby and the bratz would have donethat allready!

I also want to say that if parents dont like it then dont get it for them! Its your kid you are supose to be looking after! there are teens who get kicked to the side ande half to be bord out of there minds because of people who think that something is so bad that the want it goten rid of! I am not understandin people like you so called parrents who think that shows like monster high and chowder are so bad that you complain untill they get rid of them, and yet you say nothing about skins and teen moms! what if your kid decides to get pregnant or be sexual active because of shows like that! Dont blame Shows that are practicly inocent shows that teens watch when they can! There is only one thing you can do, if you don't like something then don't watch or let your kids watch it!

"Not one thing was said when the bratz dolls were made!"

LOL, what rock have you been living under? People have been complaining about the bratz dolls for ages!

I love how incredibly defensive you are. D'aww. I remember when I took everything as a personal attack, too. Ahh, middle school. What a magical time.

First of all im in high school! Secondly I was probably like 9 so i had herd nothing of it so my bad. But it still its a dall why dont they pick on skins or sixting and pergnant till theres a full on riot.

when i was a kid and had barbie dolls, it was pretty clear to me that their body shapes are impossible. none the less i appreciated the dolls because it was fun to make clothes for them and brush their hair. have all of you forgotten what it was like to own a doll or did you all seriously think "now THIS is exactly what society expects of me to look like"?

maybe i just had parents who knew how to be responsible and fed me enough fish for normal mental development.

I've gotten my eight year old daughter these dolls - we have 7 out of 8 of them! They are cool-looking, they come with tons of accessories, and yes, attitude. And yes, they ARE better than Bratz dolls, because they are MONSTERS, not sexualized little girls, they are feminized monsters, ergo, fantasies. It's fun to talk about the literature and myths around the dolls. They are also dressed no differently than any of the girls on the Disney channel. What I find appalling here is that all the banning mob seems to forget that you are supposed to talk to your children! We have those discussions in our home: "Do you think this would be appropriate to wear to school or work? Where might it be appropriate to wear? Do you think that that is the right amount of jewelry, or could it be too much? Can you think of a reason why you might not want to wear too much jewelry (ie machine shop safety)?" We also discuss "Less is More" and my own personal mantra: "You don't need to keep all your goods in the shop window!". I am teaching my children to think critically, and be aware of their responsibilities to themselves and the society in which we live. Anything less - including banning items outright - is LAZY parenting. BTW - I told my daughter I didn't like Bratz dolls because they seemed to have limited career options!

"And yes, they ARE better than Bratz dolls, because they are MONSTERS, not sexualized little girls, they are feminized monsters, ergo, fantasies."

>>It's 100% your prerogative whether or not you'd like to give your daughter a complex about her body (being facetious). However, I seriously think you're kidding yourself if you think you're on some sort of moral high ground by choosing Monster High dolls over Bratz. If you're to critically examine Bratz & see that they're sexualized, then you can *most certainly* do the same with M.H.

Seriously. Let's look at some pictures back-to-back, shall we?...

>>Actually...now that I've spent the last 10 minutes looking at photos of these ridiculous dolls, it seems pretty apparent to me that the Monsters are WORSE. They're way skinner & their outfits are *extremely skimpy*

Apparently you're daughter is going to have "limited" body image options as well. Congratulations, mother of the year.

Her daughter is going to come out perfactly fine! my mom taught me like that and here I am a teen girl that does not care what others think of me! And yes I played with barbie and with the bratz! Heck I'm working my butt off cleaning my house for money so I could get a monster high doll! Just because you probley came out all mesed up in the head dose not mean that others will! how you treat your kids or will treat them.... Wow there gunna come uot jacked up!!!! you sound like the type who will try your hardest to get a show cancled just because you dont want your child to watch it instead of being A GOOD PARENT AND WATCHING YOUR CHILED!!!!!! so congrats monther of the year!!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, really that's an ignorant comment. Since when does a doll really tell you how to look. I played with Barbies and Bratz as a little girl, and I do not have an image complex.
So I'm pretty sure her daughter will be just fine.

how is this doll worse than bratz or barbie or any of the other horrors on the "girls" pink aisles? they're all inane and designed to sap the brain cells from girls.

Honestly protecting kids from reality is the worst thing people do to their kids. Wouldn't you rather be able to know how you child found out about something, then shield them from it and have them "find out" from the internet with no explanation from their parents? By the way this is a freaking make believe toy!! If your kid is that gullible then you have done something wrong. This doll is no more disturbing than the same s TV shows and books that are geared towards kids. Trust me keeping kids in a "parent cave" about this stuff will make you regret it one day and doesn't help them at all.
02:57 PM on 03/20/2011
I think it is less about "protecting them from reality" and more about what is age appropriate. Sex, alcohol, driving and voting are all "reality" but we don't expose children to any of those things at a young age without the necessary preparation and time to mature. Children should have time to have fun and be "children" for a while in my opinion. I would not feel a 5-7 year old needs to learn about plucking and shaving in order to feel socially acceptable and beautiful.
02:36 AM on 03/21/2011
Obviously your child has never seen you shave. And you probably don't fart either.
06:08 PM on 04/01/2011
But the doll is not shoing them any of that! Not tomention that when they get elementery school they will be picked on for having hairy arms.
02:02 PM on 03/19/2011
Mattel, I am keeping my daughter the heck away from you!!!!

And furthermore the "messaging". Why not a Ken doll that ...shaves his back..or plucks his "monobrow"..or..a K-Doll..that pulls his "gangsta pants " up above his crack to go out in public..or shoot any male doll ..that brushes his teeth, takes a bath..picks up his own underwear..HA! Why is it always the women...image..dress..beauty..image..dress beauty....our "hygiene". God ..a male dolly..that puts on a condom..over and over and over. With the message of course..he do "his part" in avoiding teen pregnancies...and...

"a K-Doll..that pulls his "gangsta pants " up above his crack to go out in public..."

See the, apparently short-lived, Bratz Boyz series. But beware gazing too long into their soulless eyes.

Seems like a long time now we need a "rating" of dolls pushed at little girls. She looks like a PORN TROLL. That stupid congresswoman, wants to pass a law for dress code of little girls to stop rape..should first pass a law governing what dress style big corporate puts on their dolls to push at the little girls. Imagine..if it didn't meet a standard of decency...you not get to sell to the kiddies. This..should be on the adult market. I remember my littel niece..being facinated with Princess Diana. I removed the tiara many nights after she had gone to sleep. What happened to "would Princess Diana /Jackie O (my era) wear this"? Be a "lady or porn troll..lady ..or porn troll...lady". But then there are not many lady female role models for young girls. Was saying today..all the young talent..has to "porn pose"...dress nasty..(Rhianna) to sell there talent. You dont' see J. Timberlake..on all fours with his tongue out to sell his music.

Is the implication that all werewolf children are all hookers? Because if so, they nailed it!

I hate all of those friggen articles. It's a DOLL. You know what I think? Parents need to get their lazy asses off the couch and teach moral value to their children BY THEMSELVES and stop relying on toys to do it for them.
Do they really think little girls look at Clawdeen's flaw and go ''my hair grows fast, god I'm such a freak!'' Odds are,a little girl that finds these things to be freak-ish wouldn't want such dolls anyway!

Would you, the mother,Go out in public with a skirt and Gorilla legs? No? Then you are setting this supposed example for your child too.

my daughter took after her father
she already has hair on her 4 year old back and shoulders, a monobrow and a hairy forehead
i told her if it bothers her we can get laser to remove the hair when she wants to.
so far she is confident enough. she looks at herself in the mirror and tells ME that she is beautiful.
the problems will not start with the doll but with the other kids at school

The heavy makeup, open-toed strap boots and peek-a-boo black lace mini put it over the top for me.
Heck, this doll dresses better than the teenage hookers downtown.
I give it three stars.
...would've given it four had it included a stripper pole or a "Cruising John" Ken doll with a rental car and sunglasses disguise.

Not in my world. I know someone who became one just to see if he could lick his own b@lls.
