More Job Cuts, Closures In Store For REDgroup

Sydney Morning Herald:

Administrators for Borders and Angus & Robertson have announced new lay-offs and warned that more bookshops could close.

The loss of 26 positions from REDgroup Retail's Melbourne headquarters are effective immediately, administrator Ferrier Hodgson said.

I stopped at Borders during their closing-out sale.
Didn't buy anything. Even after the 30% discount, prices were STILL higher than Amazon.

And this is the reason they're closing-- outdated business model.

But Amazon has made it their business to put bookstores, be they Borders, B&N, or independents, out of business. They deal in a volume that is hard to compete with and that let them set their own prices.

The one in Goleta, California is closing; my son and I are bummed about that. No more Javanilla milkshakes on our way to Grandma's house, especially after eating at the burger joint next to it. Made for a relaxing stop, and it was in a nice place. Sorry to see it go.

Yes, but as indicated in the post, I don't live there, so my shopping there would not have maintained the store.

The one near my house closed last year, they tore down the building and put up a Walgreens, to go with the other 100 Walgreens that are on every corner in my area.

The one further away from my house is having its blowout "The End" sale. Went yesterday and purchased 3 books. I mentioned to the bookseller at the register that it felt sad...She agreed. Then I mentioned the irony...that when Borders first came on the scene they eventually helped to put the small independents out of business like most of the big box stores do, and now they are going under. Still a brick and mortar bookstore is a presence that I hope does not entirely vanish from the landscape.

Soulfest... after the discount you received, I would wager the price was still higher than Amazon.
And this is why they're closing so many stores-- inability to compete. Alas.

I wonder sometimes why comments are removed, because that's been happening to me, too, on other sections, and nothing I said was even close to being offensive. Maybe it's some computer glitch? I'd like Huffpost to check it out.

Sometimes it is for a good cause. Sometimes cause a mod has a grudge.
A particular word often triggers it. They use semantic filter-ware.
In fact there a several words in this post that almost guarantee deletion-- immediate or after a few minutes or so.
