'Superman' Director Zack Snyder Talks Series Reboot

Henry Cavill Superman

First Posted: 03/17/11 04:40 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

He's still from planet Krypton, but this will be Superman as you've never seen him before. Just don't expect to know what that means yet.

The LA Times sat down with Zack Snyder, the man helming the Christopher Nolan-produced film reboot about the iconic superhero, to talk about the new direction he plans on taking the Man of Steel. As it turns out, whether you've seen the classic Christopher Reeve movies or not, the new Superman films will be a brand new experience.

Snyder, who cast "The Tudors" star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, wants to start from scratch, so much as a universally known story will allow.

"Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we're making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there's been no other Superman movies," Snyder told the paper. "If you look at 'Batman Begins,' there's that structure: there's the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there's this approach that pre-supposes that there haven't been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of 'Respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies.'"

Of course, "Batman Begins," and its following sequels, "The Dark Knight" and the upcoming "Dark Knight Rises," are Christopher Nolan-directed, so the fresh approach comes pre-approved. Snyder said that Nolan has been entirely receptive to his fresh take on Superman, though he declined to reveal what exactly the story will involve.

Still, it's exciting that the film will bring a fresh spin to a story so universally known; he said that, while everyone knows OF Superman, there is less of a public knowledge of who he is. Presumably, that includes Superman's many adventures and personality quirks, which have been developed over the past 70 or so years.

As for some hint, David S. Goyer is writing the script, and in December wrote a forward to a series of Superman comics that were released as a graphic novel. In the graphic novel, which Goyer raves about, Clark Kent learns his true identity as a teen and is troubled by his powers; in his forward, Goyer seems to have fallen in love with that idea.

Will that make its way into the film? No way to tell -- but it would sure be a change from the most recent films. In 2006, Brandon Routh starred in a continuation of the Reeve films. This would be a whole new ballgame.

The aspect I trust the most, and which makes me pretty eager to see the re-boot version of this franchise is the fact that Christopher Nolan is in charge. We have already witnessed how wonderfully he re-booted Batman...wildly creative, stunningly visual, and truer to the "graphic novel" approach of the comix. Superman could just as well become a newly iconic superhero figure.

I did not like the Nolan Batman films. They take a character based in the fantasy world of comics and thrust him into a too realistic 'Law & Order: Gotham' type of world. Superheroes are supposed to have elements of the fantastic, I will be disappointed if the Superman reboot takes the same course.

Apparently you've not been paying attention, GCPD is an excellent comicbook in the police prodedural vein, in the DC universe, these things have always been here, to expect 4color adventures, or that it'll remain in the 'fantasy' theme is naive.

You mean the same universe where Batman was just recently zapped by an evil demigod to the beginning of time where he became Cave-Bat & then Bat-Pirate? THAT universe? Sounds pretty fantastical to me. It's the aging comic readers that keep demanding for comics to become so mature to the point that they are "almost" real that are ruining the medium and causing it to eventually have no new KIDS to replace said aging readers.

The rumor is the next Superman movie will depict a more vengeful Superman. Supposedly he's suppose to intervene in the humanitarian crisis in Africa, that's suppose to be one of the sub-plots of the film. However I would take that with a large grain of salt. There's a lot of rumors swirling around, we'll find out soon enough.

Have you seen any of his work? He will make a great Superman. He has the perfect physicality for it and he's a good actor.

I never said he was a bad actor. Being a good actor doesn't mean you're right to fill Superman's boots. Could Jack Nicholson play Superman then?

Gee - I can't WAIT to see another Gen X actor play Superman - whiny, conflicted and self-absorbed just SCREAMS superhero.

As for the "blessing" of The Dark Knight's creator - that's all the kryptonite I need to keep my distance - Dark Knight was massively ugly and virtually incoherent. It was exactly like Avatard in it's massive initial popularity - and subsequent abandonment by those who thought it was the epitome of cool just weeks before.

Let's face it - a hundred years later - movies are pretty much played out as a creative medium. There's a reason everything is remakes and sequels - our culture is so exhausted, true originality and creativity is actually a liability - not to mention just not worth the effort...

Yeah I just "loved" in Superman Returns when Sups is reduced to a dead-beat dad who is also a stalker of Lois using his abilities to watch her in her home. Yeah, THAT'S a hero alright.

Agreed, that was crap.

Allstar Superman live action movie anyone?

How about a Superman Blue movie? I think the riots would dwarf the protests in Wisconsin.
