Poll: Latino Voters Have 'Widely Negative' Views Of GOP

First Posted: 03/18/11 08:11 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- A recent poll out of California found an uphill battle for Republicans hoping to make inroads with Latinos, the largest and fastest growing minority in the United States.

The survey, conducted by a GOP pollster and consultant, found that Latino voters hold "widely negative" views about the Republican party. Envisioned as a way to "begin the process of understanding both the challenges as well as the opportunities for future Republican candidates in gaining a greater share of the Latino vote," the poll found Hispanic voters tend to view GOP candidates as overly conservative and distrust Republican views on immigration.

While California is unlikely to play a defining role in the 2012 elections, the poll could have implications for states like Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, where Hispanics have increasing political influence.

Commissioned by Republican strategist Marty Wilson, who managed Carly Fiorina's failed campaign for the California Senate, the survey of 400 California Latino voters found a wide Latino-GOP disconnect in the Golden State. Though they tried to frame it in the best terms possible, Wilson and GOP pollster Bob Moore conceded that there was much "work to be done to convince California Latinos that the Republican Party and its candidates can effectively represent them."

Only 26 percent of Latinos polled viewed Republicans favorably, while 62 percent had a favorable view of Democrats. And asked whether Republicans should “stick to core values and nominate true Conservatives,” only 22 percent of Latino voters agreed. Approximately one-third of Latino voters say they will never vote for a Republican.

Unsurprisingly, immigration was found to be one of the most defining issues, with Wilson and Moore describing it as "the elephant in the GOP living room."

Asked who they trusted to reform immigration laws, 57 percent of voters chose Democrats, while only 21 percent went with Republicans. A pathway to citizenship was favored by a full 67 percent of Latinos surveyed.

Latinos made up 22 percent of the California electorate in the 2010 midterm elections, casting 1.7 million votes statewide, an increase of 300,000 votes from the 2008 presidential election, according to the polling firm Moore Information, Inc. Fiorina and Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman received approximately 30 percent of the Latino votes cast, according to exit polls.

"Clearly, Republican candidates must do better and must set their sights on earning at least 40 percent of these votes, if they are to have a reasonable expectation of gaining statewide office," wrote Wilson and Moore.

The survey, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, was conducted in both Spanish and English.

Well then we have many socialist-minded Latinos here in Cali because the conservative party has done waay more for the Latino community in welcoming all people here to fullfill the American dream over the history of the United States then Dems have. Dems cradle the Latino vote just to score political points to make it seem like the GOP is racist and many Latinos fall for it every time.
If statistics prove correct, the Obama Dim-inistration has deported more Hispanics then Bush did in 8 years, yet just because one is a Republican theyre automatically branded a racist because theyre accused by the other side of not caring for the "minority"
Elect Obama for another 8 years and see opporunities for Latinos and other groups erode quickly

This poll is biased because it only asked Mexicans. There are other Hispanic groups, such as the Cubans, who generally support the Republican Party.

Seriously who cares.. it is CA and they are already in so much debt.. I don't know why the GOP would even bother with the state. It's going down hill anyway..

yes, a 30billion dollar debt is a problem.. but its not that bad and its definitely not our "demise".. California's economy produces 1.85 TRILLION!! ... make no mistake, California will be the first state to benefit from Americas recovery..

As a Mexican American I am emberrased that so many Latinos feel a sense of entitlement. The real issue has been the Latin Countries themselves. Mexico has all the resources and wealth to have a balanced society, but what exists there is a great disparity of wealth greed. I often do business in Mexico.

With the knockdown of the DREAM Act and persistent hatred towards immigrants (illegal or not) from the GOP, this is not surprising at all. Typical GOP tag-line, "We support freedom and civil rights, but not for everyone!"

sorry but I didn't know it was h@te to want the federal laws respected by everyone that is in this country.. Sorry but people like you trying to protect illegal immigrants is one reason why CA is in such deep debt.

When people break law stop rewarding them. Maybe if that happened people would start entering the country Legally and be able to contribute. I'm not against LEGAL immigrants, since I immigrated to this wonderful country the legal route. I am just against people that break our laws, take advantage of all our services while demanding more. Good thing the Dream Act failed. All poor decisions have consequences.
06:05 PM on 03/23/2011
The DREAM Act was actually sensible. Its people like you that can't think outside the box to solve societies problems that are bankrupting this country, not just CA. It would simply cost too much to round up every illegal immigrant and deport them.

As for the law, our leaders, yes even ones you voted for, have shown that the law is flexible if one has the money, the connections, or an office on K Street. If you wish to help, stop with the impractical solutions that can't be done and start thinking for a change.

Given the Republican Party's hostile legislative actions, scapegoating language, and attempts to disenfranchise the Latino voters over the past years, I'm surprised anyone thought it necessary to even commission a poll on the subject.

It'd be like trying to organize a "Yankees Appreciation Day" at Fenway Park. I mean, why bother?

"hostile legislative actions" you mean wanting the federal government to enforce immigration laws.. I see how well the open border has helped CA with their debt. See here on the east coast we have been pushing ICE to do their job.. More illegals are getting deported or sent to jail.

allen, please don't try to put words in my mouth. by "hostile legislative actions" I mean just that; it has nothing to do with enforcing immigration laws. perhaps you should read a bit more about current events before assuming you know what i think. cheers!

If GOP remains on its current course, the demographic shift in our nation over the next 20 years will eventually push the Republicans into a corner they cannot recover from. The GOP may be looking at the passage of an entire generation before they can rebuild themselves on more moderate and acceptable terms. That's why Republicans are pushing so many desperate measures now to break unions, defund public institutions, privatize government services, and enfranchise big business in the electoral system. I can only imagine how the GOP dominated state governments will grotesquely gerrymander voting districts now with the 2010 census completed. It's their only hope of retaining power in their current configuration for the long term, and they know it. If the GOP doesn't succeed in the near term at these objectives, my guess is that in 20 or 30 years or possibly sooner we may see two possibilities. Either the Republican Party will be reformed by a new generation of younger more moderate voices that drop the underlying hate speech and move the party closer to the center of national politics, or they continue to spiral down the rabbit hole and moderate conservatives do something unheard of in modern politics and unseen in our nation in over a century, build a viable third party. Ross Perot almost accomplished that goal back in the early 90's with the Reform Party, but he stifled the grassroots efforts growing at the state level that would have led to such an outcome.

"...the poll could have implications for states like Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, where Hispanics have increasing political influence."

Not if the GOP succeeds with their policies. It's clear that the GOP seeks to get rid of any and all Democratic constituencies or allies. Targeting the hispanics in AZ so they will leave, abolishing the Unions in WI and elsewhere, dismantling of ACORN, taking away reproductive rights for women, etc. All under the guise of fiscal necessity. Let's hope Americans see through it...

What would you do if the US really started enforcing the laws currently on the books. This to include that all immigrants are required to carry their green card or face fines. Will you complain then.?

the laws are the laws.. if less people were illegally entering the border states then there wouldn't be a need for tougher laws. see the action of entering illegally caused law makers to pass stricter laws. cause and effect.

The key to winning Arizona is to get every hispanic voter to register and vote! Bye, bye Governor Brewer, Senator McCain (who likely won't run again anyway) and good riddance Jon Kyl. Just think 2 Democratic senators from Arizona!

California, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas ~ the border states with Mexico ~ each has 100% participation of their local counties in The Secure Communities Program ~ ending Sanctuary Cities policies

AZ SB 1070 does contain verbage banning Sanctuary Cities policies in Arizona. Making it a crime for state officials to interfere with or refrain from enforcement of federal immigration laws ~

This provision contained in AZ SB 1070 was allowed timely enactment by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/arizona-immigration-law-judge-puts-hold-key-sb/story?id=11268532

I submit ~the banning of Sanctuary Cities policies contained in AZ SB1070 & ICE Secure Communities Program go hand-in-hand
