WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden says a veteran Washington journalist will be his top communications aide.

The White House on Friday announced that The Washington Post's Shailagh (SHAY'-luh) Murray would succeed Jay Carney as the vice president's communications director. Carney last month became White House press secretary.

Biden praised Murray's experience covering a variety of domestic and foreign policy issues.

She has covered Capitol Hill for the Post since 2005 and has written about fiscal policy, the health care overhaul and national security issues, including the Iraq war debate. She also covered the 2006, 2008 and 2010 elections.

The Buffalo, N.Y., native also has reported for The Wall Street Journal.
