KGTV Sports Reporter Ben Higgins Nearly Run Over Live On Air (VIDEO)

First Posted: 03/19/11 01:43 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

A local sports reporter narrowly avoided being run over by a car while giving a live, on air report on Thursday.

Ben Higgins, the sports director for KGTV in San Diego, was in Tucson, covering a March Madness basketball game which was happening there. But as he was talking, an SUV could be seen driving in reverse on the street and coming closer and closer towards him. Higgins didn't notice anything until the car was almost on top of him. Luckily, his cameraman rushed forward to alert the moving vehicle.

As the car was backing up, it's break lights were going off and on, so the driver was looking. And, the driver almost came to a complete stop right before the reporter.

Why didn't the cameraman warn him earlier? Guess this is what happens when you have frenemies working with you.

Why on Earth didn't one of the anchors or the cameraman warn him of the car coming at him? It's almost as if, the anchors at least, wanted him to get hit, for the all important ratings.

In all fairness, the reporter could have done the shot on the sidewalk. I try to not blame the victim, but really, get out of the street.

Why was that person driving backwards for such a long time? Seems they wanted to hit this guy. The camera has a fairly bright light on it so the person almost had to have seen it. Weird man!

Seems like the kind of driver who backs onto a cross-street to keep from having to drive around the block.

I suspect he was just using his side mirrors, instead of turning and looking through the rear windshield. A common mistake.

It looks like the driver was purposely trying to hit the guy...

Wonder what app he was downloading into this phone while he was backing up? While I'll admit that I do it too, using your phone and driving can be pretty dangerous....

Ohiotechis your comment is true, BUT YOUR PICTURE IS VERY RUDE!

Yeah, I'm sure people who drive Priuses never talk on their cell phones or text while driving. I'm sure there's never been a single Prius involved in a collision caused by stupidity....

I don't know anyone who drives a Prius, but I have noticed that SUV drivers as a whole tend to drive more carelessly. They think just because they have a giant vehicle, the own the road. And they think that just because they're more likely to survive an accident, the people whose vehicles they smash will too.

Ummm... pay attention. He just said his cameraman is the one who stopped the truck. He didn't yell in an attempt no to ruin the shot, but as soon as it was clear the guy wasn't going to stop he jumped in and made the driver stop.

ummm...couldn't hear the audio. M'bad. I was only joking anyway. Just glad the guy didn't get pancaked.

The driver had to have been drunk. That's an awful long distance to back up without checking the mirrors at least once.

Not to mention he was backing straight into some camera lights.

Why was he outside reporting on a basketball game? Driver going backwards?
