World Water Day: 8 Ways To Get Involved

First Posted: 03/22/11 08:11 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Around the world, over 1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water.

Each year, World Water Day calls international attention to the plight of communities with inadequate access to water and sanitation.

Without safe, clear water, families are exposed to diseases and trapped in cyclical poverty as their time must be dedicated to fetching the resources they need to stay alive.

Nonprofit organizations are working to turn the tide for communities in need around the globe by offering new wells, water-filtration devices and other solutions to finding and purifying water.

Find out how you can get involved on World Water Day.

Charity: water

Charity: water is dedicated to bringing clean and safe drinking water to communities in developing nations. They fund 3,811 projects, which provide water for more than 1.7 million people by digging wells, harvesting rainwater and installing filters.

Volunteer and attend monthly volunteer nights in New York City. Schools can get involved in Water for Schools, a student-led campaign that helps bring water to schools in developing countries.

Get involved with charity: water.

The First Annual Global Social Change Film Festival and Institute (http://www.socialchangefilmfestival.org/) is being held in Bali with amazing films that focus on a range of issues, one being the rising seas that will completely eradicate one people's homeland (There Once Was an Island). Join us or donate to make a difference in creating the world we all want to live in.

STOP BREEDING! I mean, come on! At some point in time we will exceed the planet's capacity to sustain us (and whatever else remains alive). Shouldn't we stop the madness BEFORE we get to that point?

We at Water Charity would appreciate any help you can muster. We are working in approx. 70 nations at the moment and do more for less money than any other charity we are aware of. Just look at our Appropriate Projects Initiative for an example http://appropriateprojects.com

World Water Day is important. It is raising awareness about this horrible situation. More people die from lack of access to clean drinking water than from all forms of violence put together... including war. Come and join the fight http://watercharity.org

My wife and I work with a group in Moldova that helps drill village wells and install a filtration system on them. Even in Europe there are millions who face suspect water every day.

I wanted to invite everyone who is celebrating today, World Water Day, by joining a 30 Day Fundraising Challenge (http://goo.gl/rkD59)
Thanx to SodaStream, they have some fantastically fun prizes to give away! They are giving away limited edition "The Water Project" SodaStream Systems to the top fundraisers in the challenge. These great gadgets can turn ordinary tap water into sparkling water or soda in under 30 seconds. So much fun. (and "Green" too!)
Between March 22nd (World Water Day) and April 20th...
• The participant who raises the most money
• The participant who gathers the most unique donors (based on email address)
• And, one randomly selected participant from any page generating at least a $10 donation
... will each win a complete "The Water Project" SodaStream Kit!

Don't forget smaller charities with no overhead like "Gardens for the Gambia" that builds wells in the Gambia in Africa. Author Phillipa Gregory has done amazing work there and dug hundreds of wells, mostly in schools. http://www.philippagregory.com/gardens-for-gambia/about/
Every dime donated goes to the charity. There are no administrative fees.
