FDA Halts Imports Of Dairy And Produce From Area Of Japan Affected By Nuclear Radiation

By MARY CLARE JALONICK   03/22/11 07:20 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it will halt imports of dairy products and produce from the area of Japan where a nuclear reactor is leaking radiation.

The FDA said those foods will be detained at entry and will not be sold to the public. The agency previously said it would just step up screening of those foods.

Other foods imported from Japan, including seafood, still will be sold to the public but screened first for radiation.

Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex has been leaking radiation after it was damaged in a devastating earthquake and tsunami earlier this month. The sea near the nuclear plant has also shown elevated levels of radioactive iodine and cesium, prompting the government to test seafood.

Japanese foods make up less than 4 percent of all U.S. imports, and the FDA said it expects no risk to the U.S. food supply from radiation. Officials and health experts say the doses are low and not a threat to human health unless the tainted products are consumed in abnormally excessive quantities.

Still, the World Health Organization said this week that Japan should act quickly to ensure that no contaminated foods are sold. The most common imports from Japan to the United States are seafood, snack foods, and processed fruits and vegetables.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the House subcommittee that controls FDA spending, wrote agency officials Tuesday questioning how they could say with certainty that there is no threat to the U.S. food supply from Japanese radiation. She noted that the FDA is not always able to track where food production facilities are located in other countries.

Food safety advocates long have expressed concern over the agency's lack of money for reliable inspections abroad. A food safety overhaul bill signed into law by President Barack Obama earlier this year would increase inspections of foreign food facilities that export to the United States.

David Acheson, a former FDA associate commissioner of foods, acknowledged concerns about the safety of imported foods and the lack of agency resources. But he said the agency prioritizes risky situations like the one in Japan.

"Whenever there is a threat, then resources appear," he said.

Japanese TV is reporting you would have to eat over a hundred pounds of contaminated spinach to be in any danger of radiation poisoning. Popeye is very, very worried.

I am more concerned about
MONSANTO screwing up the food supply
than eating radiated food from Japan.

This is why people are sick today. We wonder why health care cost are so high. No food should be allowed if it has been contaminated by radiation, if we ever want to have affordable health care, we gotta stop allowing, anything to be in the food, that hasnt been proven safe for consumption.

Foods are supposed to list on the label where they are made or imported from. I always check the label, becasuse I want to know if something is from China. Their use of plastics as a nutritional additive in the past has caused me to refrain from purchasing any food from that country. However, I have noticed many companies that are flagrantly ignoring that part of the law. While Republicans are busy trying to weaken the very laws that protect us, we need those safeguards more than ever. Please, read the labels, and take the trouble to report to your State's attorney general products that do not list a food's place of origin.

But I thought that we needed to defund the FDA, I mean what would we want with people inspecting our food to make sure it’s safe.

Why, why,why didn't the Japanese ask for help with nuclear situation IMMEDIATELY and contain this disaster better? Hopefully it won't spread much more. Not good. What a mess. We all live on this planet.

According to an article I read in the NY Times, the plant's owners were concerned about losing their valuable investment. This caused them to delay efforts that would include dumping gravel and dirt on it, thereby burying their trillion-dollar investment. Amazing that they would allow workers to risk their lives inside the plant ratner than just take the loss right away out of concern for Japanese citizens.

Japanese housewives here in S. California have been buying up items in the local markets which are expected to be in short supply. Rice and many soy products are produced here in California, but some of our favorite snack items and things like really good soy sauce are imported.

Why on earth are we importing dairy and spinach from Japan? Don't we have enough dairy and spinach grown in this country? Talk about ridiculous!

A park should be built where the WTC stood. A nice park where people can walk and enjoy the sunshine, a place to reflect.

If the cons get their way.. they will just let stuff through that could be emitting so much radioactivity, it could glow in the dark.. but they dont care, since its all about saving money, not lives and helping our their corporate friends make more profits at the expense of other peoples health.

I guess it's asking too much for the FDA to tell us WHAT the dairy products are that is imported!!!
11:27 AM on 03/23/2011
Yes, that would be asking too much.

Isn't this the same Food & Drug Administration that the conservatives want to chop-chop along with so many other have-to-have programs? Sure it is... cutting any and all safety measures is one of their agenda items... you know the same people who keep squawking about  being pro & for-LIFE (ha,ha)... you betch'a... they want to do away with anything that helps Americans live comfortably & safely & freely.
