America's Victorian Inns With Style (PHOTOS)

While there are still a lot of doilies and flowery pillows decorating the cozy Victorian Inns of America, there are also a growing number of chic spots and clever re-purposing of previously discarded architecture.

Across the country, innkeepers have turned everything from houseboat retreats to Midwestern farmhouses even living quarters for working-class millworkers into postmodern escapes.

Trazzler.com put together a list of their favorite re-purposed Victorian inns around the country, from the more famous Hotel del Coronado to the slightly-less known Porches Inn in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Inn on Ferry Street in Detroit, Michigan
1 of 11
Detroit is not a city where you might expect to find a small boutique hotel on a residential street. But tucked away near the Detroit Institute of Arts off Woodward Avenue in Midtown, guests at the Inn on Ferry Street stay in a collection of four renovated 19th-century mansions and two carriage houses. Each of the 40 rooms are spacious and comfortable, with giant four-poster beds covered in fluffy bedding and bathrooms that are modern and luxurious. A hearty breakfast, complete with a make-your-own waffle station, is served each morning, and an honor bar satisfies any mid-day urges for a jolt of caffeine or a soothing sip of pinot noir. It's a perfect home-base for those exploring the Motor City, even without a car. There are several bars and restaurants within walking distance, and the Inn's free shuttle will provide transportation anywhere within a five-mile radius.

Setting: Renovated mansions in a residential Detroit neighborhood
Vibe: In-the-know city explorers
Perks: Complimentary shuttle, waffle bar, parking, wireless
Nearby: Museums, restaurants, bars, shopping (more below)

So the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo didn't make it? If only for the high kitsch factor.

And no it has nothing to do with Madge.

Hotel del Coronado is beautiful, I'll give it that. But having stayed there myself, it was seriously not even close to worthy of its rates.

Thanks Yorkie! Our family fell in love with Bayfield and her old Victorians back in the early 70's.

del Coronado isn't actually in San Diego, it's across the bay in Coronado.

Site of the movie 'Some Like It Hot', where it played a hotel in Florida.
