Apple announced in a press release issued Wednesday morning that Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of Mac Software Engineering, will be leaving the company after more than a decade with Apple.

What's next for the exec who helped create Mac OS X and spend over 20 years working with Steve Jobs?

"I've worked with Steve for 22 years and have had an incredible time developing products at both NeXT and Apple, but at this point, I want to focus less on products and more on science," Serlet said in a statement.

Vice president of Mac Software Engineering Craig Federighi will be taking over for Serlet.
