Late Returns: We Have Our First GOP Presidential Candidate

First Posted: 03/23/11 08:31 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 07:40 PM ET

Ladies and gentlemen, pop the champagne, because the 2012 race for the GOP nomination finally has an officially declared candidate. It's Fred Karger! Can you feel the excitement? Probably not, because the media has pretty resolutely refused to take Karger very seriously. But the truth is, Karger has been deep into this running for President game, from way way back in the day (the "day" being July of 2010). Of course, if you read the Speculatron, you're already in the know.

In his press release, Karger makes note of all of the "firsts" that the media has thus far straight up ignored:

Karger was the first to announce he was seriously considering running for President on April 10, 2010 at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans and the first to establish a Presidential Exploratory Committee on July 18, 2010. He was the first to run commercials in New Hampshire right after Labor Day last year, the first to run an Iowa commercial right after the November midterm elections and the first to hire a State Director in Iowa on December 1, 2010. So it only stands to reason that Karger would be the first to file for the Republican nomination for President. Oh, yeah, Fred would also be the first openly gay candidate to run for President in history.

Karger comes to the table with some serious bona fides, having served as a consultant for Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. He gets written off because he presents himself as a single issue candidate -- a conservative gay rights activist:

After a 30 year career in politics, Karger retired in 2004 and became an LGBTQ activist. During the summer of 2008, he discovered the Mormon Church's complete control of California's Proposition 8 and filed a sworn complaint with the California Ethics Commission against the Mormon Church. The Salt Lake City based Church was prosecuted, investigated, found guilty and fined after an 18 month investigation.

Karger also filed the successful complaint against the National Organization for Marriage for alleged money laundering with the state of Maine's Ethics Commission. That investigation is ongoing after 16 months.

But as with his exploratory committee, his campaign ads, and his formal announcement, Karger's from-the-right defense of LGBT rights is similarly ahead of the curve.

Anyway, write it down -- FRED KARGER: FIRST IN, IN 2012!

Here's Brian Stelter and Megan Liberman talking about the Tim Pawlenty video. It's a video! And it's on the internets! And it's really interesting because Pawlenty is sort of a boring guy but he's got this exciting video, and the only thing that could vitiate the excitement of this video is another video where we have a boring discussion of things that would be obvious if you only watched the video itself. But: videos! They are important! Maybe other candidates will make videos! Maybe this video will "go viral!" Maybe our video will "go viral!" Maybe a video of this video discussing Pawlenty's video will be even more viral! Viruses, I guess? [The Caucus]

Rand Paul for President? Okay, whatever, it's not like I had anything planned for this evening. [Wonkette]

Last week, conservative intellectuals made a big deal about expressing their feelings about Sarah Palin's inadequacy as a presidential candidate. This week, that's been modified somewhat -- now the presidency is entirely beneath Sarah Palin, who at this point, should just wait to become Starfleet Commander or something. [TPMDC]

Can you imagine the bashing that Karger or any other gay/lesbian President would get get... after witnessing the bashing that President Obama gets for being black?! It would even be worse for a gay president which is hard to imagine. There's no doubt in my mind that conservative GOP-thugs are bound and determined to destroy our president ONLY because he is a black man. A gay president would NEVER have a chance in office. Sad but true.
11:39 AM on 04/12/2011
That's ridiculous. You'll never be able to beat them unless you properly understand their motivations. The don't care that Obama is black. They care that he is a liberal. On the other hand, they would definitely bash Karger for being gay.

Just because he's a Republican doesn't make him a bad guy.. He doesn't seem like a bad guy to me.

No, but it does make him a supporter of a witless ideology which historically leads to bad outcomes for everyone not a member of the upper class. This is like saying, "Just because he's a rattlesnake doesn't mean he's going to bite."

I see what your saying and normally I would agree, but Ive done some research on this guy and he doesn't even seem Republican, to me, the way he speaks and what he believes in. I mean I don't like Republican either but I think he could be the one that I can see myself liking.

I see that some of you are going to vote for Obama in the next presidential election..If I have learned anything the past 2 years it is that Obama does not have the intelligence to receive my vote again. He has caused my health insurance to go up 20%..He will not give permits to drill for USA oil. Causing me to pay $3.50 for gas..He now has us in another war...that he does not know how to run...I will never vote for another young person for president...They don't have the experience needed for that job,.

And for many of us that intend to vote for President Obama in his reelection campaign, let me assure you that you have only further convinced me that it is the right decision. The quick way to figure out whom to vote for is to find an astroturf invalid and do the opposite of their suggestion.

Might I also suggest that you try reading up a bit on cause and effect because it is clear that you have no idea what it actually means.
02:05 AM on 04/12/2011
For an "Acedemic" you sure didn't have much to say. The individual (ok-man) had some good points, yet all you did was try to belittle him as an "astroturf invalid", which doesn't really mean anything to me. Pull you head out of your southbound side and re-read what the person wrote and attack that, not the person, they have done nothing to you, stu pid! And, if you are still voting for Obama, as you say, due to this person's comment, you are not as smart as you think! Study up, "academic"!

I met with his intern yesterday here in the granite state. As a lifelong Democrat I must say hes campaign is at least a refreshing one. He is a traditional moderate Republican who is Pro-Choice, Pro-LGBT, Pro-Labor, Pro-Education and Immigration reform. Needless to say the man has a lot of great policy ideas. Although I still plan on supporting the Head Of State, I must say a republican like Fred Karger is refreshing and I wish there were more like him.

Fred has discovered what other GOP hopefuls know. Forming an exploratory committee and then declaring candidacy allows them to raise copious amounts of money. Not a bad deal as you get to ride on private jets, eat and drink the best of the best, hire a few buddies, and generally live the bloated ego life.

Liberals kow that defending Obama won't be easy so they want a GOP candidate to focus on so they can tear him down. Libs always need someone to ridicule and the delay in having a GOP front runner to attack is frustrating them.

Obama doesn't need to be defended, he can do it himself. What he needs is a candidate worthy of competing against him. And thus far, none of your candidates are interesting enough, with the exception of Karger, to make even a mild dent in Obama's armor. Do you honestly think Americans of any stripe will elect a fat old man to the presidency in this day and age? Or some guy who looks like a slick used car salesman and belongs to a religious cult? Or a guy like Pawlenty, whose name is so weak sounding that if you try and say President Pawlenty ten times fast it becomes a tongue twister? Or a wacky tart wearing too much make up, so we'd be afraid to send her overseas because she'd wink at the wrong evil dictator and we'd end up in another war?

Americans are shallow, not stupid!

You seem to define things as liberal or conservative. The issues we are facing are not always that simple. Once the Republicans have a front runner the choice will be very clear and this is one "lib", as you call them, who will be very confidant in defending President Obama against any of the Republican possibilities.
